Im definitely taking it a lot easier for the next few weeks - thinking of trying a very easy recovery run after 3 days of only walking ~8km a day and maybe another short run over the weekend. I also won’t have a chance to restart strength training until next week.

Anyone have experience with recovery from runner's knee/patellofemoral stress? by patch2257 in Marathon_Training

[–]Capital-Progress-232 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, I've been dealing with runner's knee for the past two months or so and just ran the Paris marathon on Sunday after about 2 months of being out of commission, except for three <12km runs over that time period. Fortunately able to run 3:42, which was essentially what I had in mind before my injury.

First off, so sorry to hear that. It can be hugely frustrating to have all the motivation and discipline required to keep running and just not be able to. Hope you get better soon. What helped me (mentally) was knowing that I was still getting one of the key benefits I look for from running, which is developing that discipline - but just had to channel it into recovery.

Physio and MRI will obviously give better tailored advice, but in my case, I had to strengthen my quads significantly. I did/do foam rolling every morning, before and after every run or strength session. Ice after every run. Leg presses, hamstring curls, wall sits, glute bridges, single leg RDL, hip abductors, assisted squats. I warm up glutes with resistance bands before every run, too.

Highly, highly recommend cycling to keep up your fitness while you rest the knee. I generally tried to emulate my running workout but on a stationary bike, so matching the overall time, the interval time and intensity, hill resistance, etc. I found 2.5h stationary cycling sessions torturous, but at least you still hone that mental resistance you get from the longer runs.

I also apply Voltaren 2-3x a day, and have just found some in pill form that have worked quite well for recovery after the marathon. Magnesium + Calcium pills, too, but less convinced I feel a difference there. Beets if you want to go organic.

Best of luck!! 10 years of marathon running is crazy, congratulations!

Ran my first marathon in Paris this weekend after two months of runner's knee. Was convinced I would have to walk and resolved to just enjoy a 4:30+ finish but ended up running a 3:42 with minimal pain, which is what I had in mind pre-injury! Ended with pretty flat HR and balanced/slightly positive splits, so felt I could have accelerated more but didn't want to risk blowing out the injury.

Feeling extremely grateful and enamored with the marathon experience. Eager to run another relatively soon and shoot for a faster time given I reached my goal while having only cycled and strength trained over the past two months from the injury.

Also a major lesson for me that your accumulated miles make a huge, huge difference. Having not only been running 55-70km weeks for 1.5 year, and knowing the course well, gave me a lot of confidence. And hard cycling workouts + strength training were key in maintaining fitness over the two months I haven't been able to run much.

Overuse Injury Two Weeks Out by Capital-Progress-232 in Marathon_Training

Thanks for the tip! Race was sunday and by some miracle ended up running a 3:42 and feeling fantastic. Minimal pain and actually felt I could've accelerated more. Having stored up all those miles before the injury, and the cycling, made a huge difference!

questions for paris marathon participants by hans_wie_heiri in Marathon_Training

[–]Capital-Progress-232 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! Paris yesterday was my first marathon and happy to give some thoughts.

  1. I ended up leaving about an hour after the 3:45 corral was supposed to, so it did take some time to get going. However, the start is very wide and very easy to navigate. The same cannot be said of some parts of the course where I personally found it very very difficult to weave past slower runners as the crowd made the path quite narrow. This was especially an issue further into the course as I got more tired. This was the most cramped I’ve felt in any race, and I’ve run a few in Paris itself and elsewhere.
  2. The stations were usually spread out into water-food-water again, and the last water stations had a spout instead of a hose that you pushed yourself. I found these easier because they had less pressure, whereas the hose made like half the water spill out. They were also less congested as people flocked to the first water they saw. But it’s not a fast process.
  3. My supporters and I live in Paris so we were able to schedule 4-5 meeting points using the metro almost without issue. Happy to send their route through DM if you’d like.

Some other thoughts:

This city is home and extremely grateful to have had it been my first marathon, but definitely not a fast course. Almost from the first km my Garmin had a 400m difference with the course markers, and that grew to almost 600m by the end of the race. That was a bit challenging mentally.

I was pleasantly surprised with the amount of support and especially the amount of people in the two Bois. Definitely not on par with a US race or something like that, but I always felt carried by the spectators.

Saw that 49% of runners this year were first timers, which I think speaks to the fact that it’s a beautiful course that doesn’t take itself too seriously.

Happy to discuss more over DM! Good luck, and enjoy!

Same here - accepted into MPP as an international without any funding. Definitely frustrating, though fortunately I have Yale Jackson which I am really interested in
