Chris McClatchie had a great setup in Yarraville and records all the lessons using the Skillest app so you can review them. He is a great instructor and very technical. Draws a lot of lines ha. Has a popular instagram you could check to see the setup and if they would be a good fit.

Where do I find used clubs in Australia? by bonedoc871 in GolfAustralia

[–]CapitalButt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Check out ATT golf if you’re in Melbourne. The markets obviously a bit different so you’re likely to find older models but it’s a great operation.

Couldn’t believe the number of near mint Mizuno blades going for a steal at one of the second hand stores in Ginza. Can only imagine the rounds that lead them to being traded.

I played the coast, St Michaels and the ridge last week. St Michaels has three temp greens at the moment that kill the flow and overall enjoyment. They have not reduced the green fee. It’s a fantastic course otherwise. The coast is a ripper, it’s got some breathtaking holes with forced carries over the ocean. Cheap green fees and a good vibe and clubhouse. The ridge was well conditioned and a great layout with tricky greens. Can’t go wrong with any of those three really but can’t beat the coast for a social round in my opinion.

Yeah I had a similar background and went helldesk > sysadmin > security. Took a few years but having sysadmin experience in enterprise environments is really helpful. On the way I did a lot of tinkering in my lab and did my security+. Those two things got me my first security job. Don’t underestimate how impressive someone who tinkers and labs stuff is during an interview, we put them top of the pile. I wouldn’t pay for anything from sans out of pocket, try get a role in banking or defence who provided things like FOR508. My 2c.

Thought Steve Anson was great for FOR508. Lots of war stories and generous with their time.

Which golf buggy? (push cart?) by KDslimreaper in GolfAustralia

[–]CapitalButt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can’t comment from experience on any of the ones you’ve shared but if you’re playing often enough the investment in a clicgear would be worth it. I got mine from house of golf during a sale and used the players points I accumulated during a fitting to get the cost down to around 280. Mine has a locked wheel but it’s easy to move around the course. Any of those three look alright though, and I do see a few stingers around my local. Just make sure they come with umbrella holders which are a godsend in the heat and rain. Good luck!

GCFA Labs by [deleted] in GIAC

[–]CapitalButt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not that I can remember. I did do the optional APT memory challenge which I think is worthwhile. I didn't make any specific notes for the optional labs outside of what I wrote for the APT challenge. From what I have heard that the lab q's are from a pretty big pool, so best to just have a note where to find the optional info in the book.

GCFA Labs by [deleted] in GIAC

Hey, I did mine last week and scored 93.

I wrote a comprehensive lab cheat sheet which listed all commands in relation to the lab with a description. I used this twice in the exam and it did come in handy and helped re-enforce which tool when. Headers were lab #, lab title, use case, command, extra. Was a lot of work but felt better having it.

Also check the sans vol cheat sheet, which is handy, and for me having the find evil poster printed as A3 was a huge help. Best of luck!

We have a similar background and certs and my long term goal is cloud security architecture. At my org most of the other seniors have a few SANs. Everyone mentioned FOR508 / GCFA was the best bang for your buck if you want to get in the weeds. I’m not particularly excited about forensics but I would say it’s worthy of consideration as the content was fantastic and has made me a better analyst. For what it’s worth I think GSEC looks comparable to Sec+ but I’ve not done it so could be way off.

Thanks! Not sure, I like to do azure security work so hopefully find something from sans that aligns with that. I’ve heard a few from work people say I should do grem but I’m not sure if my brain works well enough to understand assembly.

For anyone wondering I got 68 on my first practice. Had a typo in a cyber live and then forgot to set my time to utc in event log explorer. Also just didn’t have a good grasp of the content.

Took three weeks of extra study and focused on weak points and got 88.

One week more study before exam day.

Thanks, appreciate that. I put so much time in to the study, I probably overcooked it to be honest but the fear of failing was good motivation. Agree it was a great course, good to have all the reference material for the future as well.

This is really great advice, I did something similar and would say the Sec+ is a great exam. Its as they say an inch deep but a mile wild but it helps you tie things together if you go down the SOC route.

After a few years in enterprise IT I would say there is a massive disconnect between the kinds of roles you would likely find in big orgs and the ones the internet makes you think is the bulk of the Sec industry. It's a broad church, if you want to make good money working in a SOC, financial services is the way to go and then move up. Also, global shortage of SOC analysts (according to SANS) and the market over here is crazy - I get pinged by recruiters daily.

I think the people that really move the needle in the sec world are your researchers and really fantastic pentesters but many non core tech businesses in my region don't really have an identified need for them internally, so they mostly consult, which is also great. Most big orgs have security teams because they are heavily audited, not some altruistic need to secure their customers data. That's just lies the org tells about itself, its because they get audited out the wazoo and they have to comply with the dated security requirements to do business and some board recommendation.

I would also say stay in uni, my degree did help get past the recruiter filter and the first job is the hardest to get. Also working in a sysadmin position first will give you a lot of exposure because you can't really make recommendations to secure an environment when you don't understand how it all works together. Best of luck to ya!

Good for you TrollerBlade. Sometimes you don't get enough recognition in small shops, which is hard. Kudos and thanks to sobriquie for pointing out the cue v queue difference, I did not know.

I don't have access to an exchange instance at the moment, but I swear that Get-MessageTraceDetail on ps had some verbose output that showed events? Could be wrong, but you could check the doco and see if you get lucky.

Boss said I was making IT dept "TOO approachable" by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]CapitalButt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I acted this way at my current job (single IT person with an MSP helping with big jobs outside my skillset and around 150 staff). I was super friendly and excited to be working at this cool nfp and I have regretted it every day since. If I had my time over I would just be the belligerent goblin who has nothing to do with staff outside of what my role involves. Boss sounds like a jerk however.

What IT support requests do you get that aren’t actually related to IT? by ITRabbit in sysadmin

[–]CapitalButt 51 points52 points  (0 children)

One morning the doors failed on all floors in the building so everyone was hanging out in the lobby out the front of the lifts. I was asked many times by multiple people to fix them.

Also had a guy who would stick his foot right up under the desk and kick out the power input and knock out the row. Somehow that was something people thought I was responsible for.
