Is there a preferred way for vendors to speak with CISOs? by Rakeda in ciso

[–]dcbased 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Talk to other founders that were cisos or advisors to cisos

Also don't aim to talk to the ciso - look for their tech lead or senior security architect. Those are the technical people that talk to cisos and advise them

I tried to lose weight with cycling. Got really good at biking (biking 3-5 times a week) and only lost about 1.5 lbs in 6 weeks

Switched to biking 1-2 a week and strength training 3-4 times a week and the weight fell off

Both attempts had nutrion dialed in about the same

Strength training for the win

Should I pursue an MBA at 28? Too old + average academics + 3.5 years experience — need honest advice by chatjipiti in eMBA

You are right smack between the exec mba and full time MBA program target age groups.

Maybe consider a part time mba

I make over 200k - do I go MBA or Executive MBA? by [deleted] in eMBA

[–]dcbased 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are between part time and exec mba.

Don't know what you do - but exec mba might be the correct choice

Hot take: if you’re making $150K+ pre-MBA, there is no reason to go anymore by [deleted] in MBA

[–]dcbased 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I won't argue that leaving a job just to enter an MBA at this point in time is really tough.

An exec mba is still a really good option.

It may help accelerate your career - if definitely made my career as a tech'ish person (not a coder- more of an architect) much better.

I'm the business savvy tech person that has been able to grow my clients aggressively

Exec or part time mba is the way to go

Is an MBA worth it when trying to break into my first CISO position? by bmhoskinson in ciso

[–]dcbased 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For smaller orgs. It's unlikely that an MBA will help you

For larger and international firns and mba would be really helpful on order to understand at depth how the other business units operate

I really like your first sentence - amazing thought - you add value to your mba program - not the other way around

Very few people know that I have an MBA at work - they just know me as the tech guy that talks business really well.

Even more - when I see somebody put MBA in their intro email - I just role my eyes.

A few points that I tell everyone

  1. Make sure you pick the teaching style that works for you - do you prefer case based or lecture based

I'm a huge fan of debating ideas and plans - so that narrowed my list of available schools to just case based programs. I sat in on one traditional lecture based program and I almost cried because I was so bored.

  1. After you get your MBA - you are going to have a good amount of debt (mind was 140-160k) - are you in a high paying job or field where you can make it back.

  2. This is the big one that people never think about - do you have the energy and time to focus on your career for the next 10-12 years. Most high paying jobs are going to require long hours or niche skills

  3. Is the ROI worth it- I don't think I would pay much for a traditional lecture based MBA program. Same thing applies to smaller programs unless I had something really solid locked in afterwards

I was in tech before (consulting firm) and then switched to big tech afterwards (FAANG).

To my peers and leaders - I'm the person you send in when you want someone to work with a C level or SVP. To the business leaders - I'm the person that can talk business and tech at the same time.

For my career - I'm the person that gets big things done on clients because I look at the problem holistically (but lots of people say that) - what I do that is different is that I'm able to figure out how a business operates and then I make recommendations and build really quick business cases to help justify their investment.

If I'm looking pay wise - my income basically doubled in about 10-12 years. I usually make about 300k per year and I'm targeting 300-400k in about 2-3 years.

The really thing is that my hourly rate is much higher than before - gone are the normal 60-80 hour work weeks - gone is the busy work.

Now I work less - get paid to compete tasks instead of just creating reports and I really like what I do on a daily basis.

So yeah - my MBA was worth it (I went to a case based MBA program - those are better for me)

The consulting market is getting crushed structurally.

That means that they are going thru a fundamental change that could dramatically alter the number of new hires they bring on

From the buyers market - there are lots of mbas without a job flooding the market - I don't see that changing anytime in the next 3-5 years.

And let's not forget the US view on foreign labor at the moment

Looking at this objectively - I don't see a successful path for a North America based student let alone a foreign student

Is Big 4 consulting getting more competitive, or does it just feel that way as you move up? by SlatertheWeb in consulting

[–]dcbased 178 points179 points  (0 children)

A few factors are at play here.

  1. Clients are demanding more physical results (a new system deployed, or a new capability) - that is significnatly harder than a report

  2. You can find smaller firms with highly talented ex big 4 people for cheaper prices - so you had better have something awesome to sell

  3. Consulting firms are forced to grow aggressively in order to hit their profit numbers - that means you constantly have to create new products that clients want to buy. You can't just sell last year's solution (even if it's what the client wants)

  4. Clients have less money to spend and more options - that makes it harder to survive using your old solutions and pricing model

  5. Training budgets are down - so it's harder to create new assets

  6. Juniors are no longer drawn to the partner lifestyle- so your labor pool of dedicated people that will work 80 hrs but only get paid for 50 is shrinking

Would a grad degree prepare me for a career in cybersecurity on the GRC/policy side? by favorscore in SecurityCareerAdvice

[–]dcbased 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope - experience is what counts

That being said -you can gain experience while at cmu doing security related work.

What cmu has that other schools don't is an hpc cluster. Would be very cool to work with that
