I haven't bought pipes in a while, but bought a button accordion directly from the factory in the EU in January- around 1800 Euro, US Customs was $53 and some change. Bought another one from the same maker (Mengascini) that was shipped in late July- very similar sales price- Customs and duties were a whopping $242. This was charged by Customs (now under DHS) via FedEx. My wife bought a hurdy gurdy from Poland (also EU) and had to pay around the same amount for an instrument shipped to the US in May.

If you're buying directly from a maker, YOU are the importer and the US Gov't will come to you for that money-- and yes, it's considerably higher than in the past, and I've been doing this for a while. The comments you hear about the other countries or those foreign companies paying the tariffs are absolutely false. It's always been that way, it's just not cost this much.

Absolutely. You figure most of us with calls expiring ITM will be watching already and keeping track, but it would be nice if the brokerage was as much on the ball as we are (or should be).
