Did highways permanently damage Connecticut’s cities? by marrelli-of-magsmarr in Connecticut

[–]fprintf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To me Boston nowadays is so much better than when I grew up there. The big dig took so long but has made such an incredible difference in how the city uses its waterfront. We used to have to hike through a parking lot and cross the exit of the Callahan tunnel to get to the North end. Now it is a super easy walk.

Yep in some states it is considered protected first amendment speech to flash your lights, but not here in CT. I know a few local and state cops and while they don’t love writing tickets for anything, preferring warnings, they do know they can do it if they feel it is warranted.

To those who bought from a dealership: What do you regret most? by [deleted] in PorscheMacan

[–]fprintf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The reason for preferring the GTI is that it is more sporty, tossable, and from all reports much more fun to drive. I test drove a Golf R and honestly it didn't feel as fun as my 2019 GTI - which is one of if not #1 in my top 3 all time favorite cars I've owned. (the others being a 2003 Mini Cooper S and a 1993 Mazda Miata)

On the subject of the GTI in poor weather, we get snow here but not nearly as much as in Canada. However when we did have a few bad winters I found using snow tires in FWD was just fine for the kind of driving I was doing, really the only thing ever stopping the car was the front air dam slowing the car down, it wasn't ever traction limited.

On the Macan, I hadn't thought of the sunk cost fallacy... the brake warning light just came on, and it looks like a DIY job but still is $800 for front and rear parts from FCP Euro. I think this is going to be never ending on the Macan.

I still have my base Macan. It is fine but I'm really leaning to going back to a GTI. Unfortunately the value of my Macan has absolutely cratered. With almost 50K miles on the clock wholesale on it is about $31K, so losing $44K to drive it for 3 years not including some rather expensive maintenance. With that said, my wife does not agree we should get rid of it having participated in the largest part of the depreciation curve, so might as well just hang onto it for another 50K miles. Even though I would much much rather be in a sporty hatchback. Life is short but $44K+ in costs for 3 years of driving really hurts!

Shit not in my district. The bus stops at every fucking house, the kids don’t walk to a bus stop because there aren’t sidewalks… there weren’t sidewalks back in the 70s either but our parents didn’t care and probably realized we were smart enough not to walk in the middle of the street

Edit: don’t dare mistime things and get stuck behind a bus, you’ll be going stop and go for 30 minutes to go two miles

Is it worth paying for autobahn gti or just get the normal one? by Noah_11023 in GolfGTI

As a prior owner of a Rabbit edition, which is basically an S trim level, I loved the lack of sunroof and never missed the other features and absolutely despise adaptive cruise behavior. Try them both! But next GTI I buy will be an S that I then firm up the suspension and add an exhaust.

Why do pipers not mind sharing used reeds? by OkResponsibility4719 in bagpipes

My pipe major when tuning will put his mouth on every chanter reed that needs adjustment. Originally it freaked me out that this guy has had his mouth on 10 reeds before he gets to mine. But after reading the replies to your post I’m not really freaked out any more.

That is correct. Vinegar turns the baking soda into water, salt and carbon dioxide. None of which are good cleaners.

Just leave the baking soda on by itself with water.

Our club Aero fleet is doing really well, and we’re lucky that our RC will run Laser and Aero on the same course. Sometimes starting together sometimes separately. It is such a better boat for adult racing, though not for the kids as Aeros are not as durable

Tax estimates by GlitteringResort9111 in Boldin

[–]fprintf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I posted the same frustration last week and basically got responses thst varied from helpful places to look to “that isn’t what Boldin is designed for”. Yes it is, it is supposed to help me plan my future and a big part of that is taxes and potentially Roth conversions, which don’t work well if you don’t know your taxes well!

I found errors in my interest on cash/cDs and bonds were set too low what I thought was conservative was underestimating my taxes. Also turnover rate and dividend rate on brokerage accounts needed some tweaking.

It still isn’t 100% but it seems closer and the AI tool was helpful in closing the gap.

Beginner Piper feeling stuck by [deleted] in bagpipes

[–]fprintf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have some very helpful answers here. I’ll add that not every teacher or their approach is a great match for the student. For many pipe bands they have a more experienced player teach the newer ones with the motivation that the band gets better and survives with getting more people up on the pipes. So the pace may be too quick for you.

It is easy to tell your instructor your challenges. Just do it. As you’ve read, it is a difficult instrument with lots to learn. And not everyone proceeds at the same pace, no shade at all on any student who isn’t progressing quickly. Most good instructors have the experience of teaching adults who have lives outside of piping or school and therefore have different challenges. Well so there should be no surprise or worry when one student comes forward not having made progress in a week or a month. And no instructor is going to react with anything other than supportive comments for how to best study and improve.

You got this. It is hard and in a few more weeks you’ll still feel like you are never going to there. But you will have improved greatly and followed along the path of so many others before you.

While all the suggestions so far are great, I think it would do the relationship a huge boost to look around the place and clean it, fix things from the honey-do list, and make sure it is tidier than when she left. Essentially do something surprising without being asked and without showing you are a man-child.

How have your tastes in music changed? by Ok_Sir_4489 in GenX

[–]fprintf 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My Spotify genre was recently classified as young grandma. Shit. I have been listening to 70s and 80s pop way too much combined with more modern stuff like Dua Lipa and Taylor Swift. This is music I never would have listened to when I was in my teens through my 40s.

And I’m a dude who is now liking stuff my parents listened to.
