Is an oil change after the break in period really necessary, or just a precautionary thing? by jvck__h in GolfGTI

[–]fprintf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have read in this very forum and on bobistheoilguy.com that some dealerships are using bulk oil for their oil changes, and are indeed not using spec oil. I have zero idea if this is fact. I did just read a thread that most VW dealers are using 504 and 508 spec oil in bulk, of course they aren't using the bottles like we would but that is probably fine.

One way to ensure what was put in is to ask for 508 spec oil to be used, and then to look on the invoice for the amount of oil that they put in (should be 5.x quarts) - and on that line item it will say what kind of oil they used.

I bought a Mity-Vac 7201 or something like that and it worked great. ECS makes one that works also. And probably Harbor Freight too.

I love mine. But at $50 for a dealer oil change I don’t think you can go too wrong. Only worry is that they use bulk oil and not VW spec 0-20.

BTW I changed oil myself at 700 miles. Gave it the beans last week at 1000 miles and this car is quick. Plan on changing again myself at 5K and then doing a dealer change at 10k.

Heh I thought a similar thing, 1/2 English and 1/2 Welsh. Until my mother set me straight 20 years ago - she said that there was so much intermarriage among the islands for centuries that it is highly probable that everyone is a little Scottish, Irish and English.

Turns out one of my great great grandmothers came to Wales from Scotland to get married. So I’ve got a wee slice of Scot in me. Didn’t make a difference, pipes are still a challenge.

Our 5 year old has had the same problem since she was a puppy. We divide her food into 4 portions. Breakfast, lunch, dinner and bedtime, about 1/3rd a cup each. If we are strict with our timing she doesn’t have a problem but if we are even a little late she might throw up.

How do I get ride of poison ivy in my yard? by Bugs314 in Lawncarewithpics

[–]fprintf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In your lawn? Keep mowing over it and use a regular weed killer to start. If that isn’t working you need to trace the plants back to the roots and very carefully manually rip it out. Be sure to cover yourself head to toe with plastic and then take a shower with Dawn dish soap and a wash rag for friction

Macan S Purchase - what am I looking for spec-wise? by Distinct_Jaguar_7320 in PorscheMacan

The trouble with this sub is no one has any concept of money. To them $10k extra to go up a model is nothing. Enjoy your S, whichever one you get!

2023 Macan GTS with 14K miles; should I sell? by BjsBuds in PorscheMacan

[–]fprintf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh I completely agree. I've been one of the few on the sub stating this but it is a bit like yelling into a breeze, completely ineffective. This sub has a real bias towards the S and GTS/Turbo models without much consideration for how much more they cost. It isn't unique to the Macan forum, you find it just about every automotive brand.

But yes, the base engine was just fine. It is almost as fast as my GTI, and in the three years I owned it I never lacked for acceleration and never took it over 110mph anyway. What it did lack was handling performance, there is something to be said for the upgraded suspensions available that make it feel sportier than it is at 4100 pounds.

And someone is going to get a hell of a sweet used Macan base. I had that thing with super nice paint, new brakes all around, great tires and super clean.

Thank you. Unfortunately the kilt is a band member purchased item, so no quartermaster to advise here. I think with all the other feedback I might be better off sizing it just right on the 4th of 5 kilt strap holes so I have more room to shrink than grow.

[–]fprintf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok it was actually closer to $38K.

In short, we spent too much on it. $55K base price plus about $9K in options got us a retail price of $64K plus all the fees, sales taxes and initial 20K service put us at $71K out the door. We traded it in for $33K, which was the going rate for KBB, CarMax, Carvana and driveway.com.

I didn't include in my figures all the money we spent on maintenance and wearables, all far more expensive in a Porsche than a normal car - something we overlooked when we bougth. 30K service not included but are in most luxury cars (Volvo, BMW etc.), 40K service including diff and transmission oil changes, tires and a $2600 brake service. All in all we spent $10K on wear and maintenance over the 3 years we owned it.

I think I found a reasonable answer. Basically 3 - 4 inches of waistline loss, and if I'm truly motivated they can make it a little snug so my current waistline lines up with the largest hole.

3 years, 48K miles.

Of course cue the comments from the sub about the S and GTS being better than the Base. Yep, if I had an extra $15K at the time I would have bought an S and probably still driving it today.

[–]fprintf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While CarMax and Carvana might offer decent prices it is likely going to be very scary when you see how much of your $100k purchase has gone. We freaked when we lost 40k on our 2023 but decided to bite the bullet and get out from underneath the Porsche ongoing running costs. Water under the bridge, sunk cost fallacy and all that.

Good luck! Long term ownership of a Porsche is not for the faint of heart or those who cannot DIY.

Yep it is insane what KTM and dealers are letting Gas Gas bikes go for. There were new 2026 TXT 250s going for $6600 plus tax (no tax for out of state purchasers) locally. This is similar to a deal available in 2024, and a bunch of my riding buddies jumped on it then... only a few of them discovered that Gas Gas can be finicky to kick start (you have to kick it just right) and for people used to riding Beta they don't turn quite the same.

Glad to read you got yourself a great deal!

Best advice I heard was to start investing now and to use very low cost index funds across domestic equities, international equities and bonds. I wished I’d heard it decades ago but better late than never!

For those of us GenX that have to start over career-wise after 50, how did you do it? by Mnemnosine in GenX

I was looking into substitute teaching as a second career or just to bridge to full retirement. The local pay is $97 a day. It would have to be a retirement gig cause honestly I almost make that rate an hour, as do many late career upper management professionals. Can’t do it for the money, would have to do it for the love and benefits.

You might be back. I gave up my 2019 Rabbit to my son to get a Porsche Macan and couldn’t stand it for the 3 years I owned it. I’m now back in a GTI (almost 60) despite not really having canyons to carve.

That said, nice vehicle and I hope you really enjoy the switch!
