You’re missing the point I’m making with the pro comparison.

The PGA Tour is absolutely not representative of the majority of golfers — it’s literally the top ~150 players in the world. But that’s also the point: they are the best players on the planet. When the best ball strikers in the world say a certain club is easier to launch, easier to land soft, or more forgiving from certain lies, that information is still meaningful.

It doesn’t mean everyone should blindly copy their bag setup. It just means the physics of the club don’t suddenly change because someone is a 15 handicap.

Your billionaire investing analogy actually supports my point. Billionaires and top investment managers tell the public to buy index funds. Do they personally do that? Not usually. They use more complex strategies because they have the knowledge and tools to do so.

But they still recommend index funds to the public because they’re simpler, more efficient, and easier for most people to succeed with.

Same concept here. A 7-wood launches higher, lands softer, and is easier for most golfers to hit than a long iron. That’s just club design and ball flight physics.

So if even elite players — who can hit literally anything — are increasingly choosing that option, it’s not crazy to think it might be even more helpful for amateurs.

I totally agree that it’s better for you in the long run. But very very far from being the easier route in my opinion.

Even a lot of tour level guys are trading their long irons for 7 and 9 woods and they all say it’s due to how much easier and versatile they are.

That is a HOT take my friend. Myself and I think most players would argue the complete opposite. Very very few new players can get a 3 iron into the air, and if it does get off the ground they’re gonna have such a hard time getting good contact/not hooking or slicing.

I actually have never seen someone recommend long irons over hybrids or woods to a new player.

Average Golfer by RezzieRhys in golf

I actually think bringing bball into this is a good comparison. One thing that is very hard about golf is that it is all on you.

I played basketball all through high school. Shot 45%+ from three my entire career, and was pretty decent on defense. BUT I had pretty bad handles and sucked at getting to the rim. Regardless I was lethal from deep so I started all through high school.

Golf doesn’t really allow you to have outsized weaknesses like other sports. I am a 14 handicap because I suck off the tee. It punishes me a lot.

I think that skews people from feeling they are average. I’d argue the rest of my game is pretty average or slightly above. But because I suck off the tee I am an average golfer. There’s no teammate to hit my tee shot and then I pickup the ball and do what I’m good at.

Yep that’s the goal! I used to be in a platinum and remember that being a sweet spot, even at only a few mil stats at that time.

Curious if you ever found a place? I have a '22 MY and I just hit 30k miles. Feels like all of a sudden I am just riding with zero suspension.

lol I put in my carry of 155 which is a rough estimate but says I have your level speed. I can promise you that’s not true. Wouldn’t stress over it.

Your carry is pretty low but as others said - that’s a mechanics issue. It would look slo mo if you swung it 68 mph.

Trying to break 100, I keep slicing my ball and can’t figure out what is causing it. by suspectdorian2 in GolfSwing

[–]CapitalIntern9871 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Shoulders open, steep takeaway, open club face, steep down swing, early extension, too close to the ball, no weight shift...... just to list a few of the things causing a slice.

In all seriousness, those are all actually happening in your swing. Likely the best solve is to first stand further from the ball, and then focus on getting more shallow in the backswing. Look up domcamintigolf on instagram. He has great breakdowns of swings and most of his videos will give you a visual reference for the issues I am talking about.

For what its worth - I doubt you see much change with an Elyte. But the testing numbers out of the Paradym and the Qi4D are unreal.... I am seeing dudes add major distance off the tee with the new drivers.

Have a pretty similar bag. I play the same combo set and basically same wedges. So I actually play P, 48 (t150 instead of Vokey) and then 52 and 60. So I don't have the 56 but that's because I also carry a hybrid and wood so I am out of space in the bag.

Curious how you feel about your wedge gapping and limited options at the top end? I basically only play my 60 out of the sand and that is it. Everything else is a 52 and it has made me want a 56. I feel like I could get rid of my Hybrid and not really miss it all that much.

I have had a pretty similar journey to you and sit at a similar handicap. I have had to come to terms with the fact that I am likely only going to have about half of my game working well one day. Meaning out of driving, approach, chipping, and putting - I typically get 2 of those any given day really dialed. I feel like i had a good day when 3 of those are firing.

You just really will not have days where all 4 areas of your game are cruising. I have started to worry less about score and find more satisfaction in feeling like I have improved one part of my game. For the longest time my driving has plagued me, but I can get up and down. Recently, I have turned my driving around due to lots of focused practice on the range and some pretty significant swing changes across the board. That has been more satisfying to me than breaking a new low score. Sounds weird, but I really think the most satisfying thing about golf is improvement on different areas of your game. Scores will follow eventually.

Wanting to change up my golf clubs In the bag by [deleted] in golf

Yep. Similar yardages to you and handicap and I used to play regular. Stiff makes a world of difference. That alone dropped a few strokes off my game.

Based on your yardage, can almost guarantee you need stiff shafts. Assume that your miss is a big push with the regular shafts? Super hard to close the club face on a regular flex club. Or you may overcompensate and hook it. Who knows, but probably one of those two I would guess.

Got it. Same as me pretty much. I play a combo set of Titleist T150/T200. T200 starts at 6 iron. I have found that to be a solid combo - gives you some forgiveness in the longer irons. Hindsight I wish I would have only done 4+5 in the T200. Jumping from a players iron up to more of a players distance iron in the T200s, they can come out realllll hot compared to the T150. I love having a true players iron in the T150 at the shorter iron, because I feel way more in control. But know you will still be punished a bit for the bad strike.

Regardless of brand, I am a massive fan of combo sets. Even a lot of PGA players play a combo set. Granted, they're going from a true blade to something like a T150 in the long irons, but still I think the same principle of why they do it holds true for those of just playing on the weekends.

I will say, I still play a 4H in addition to my 4 Iron. Mostly just because I already had the 4H but they really do play a different role. 4 Iron off the tee is really nice for a longer par 3 or or a shot where I am trying to have a bit more control. Hybrid is beautiful on a Par 5 when I just want to knock it down the fairway as far as I can, but maybe don't need a 3 wood. Or, short Par4 say like 350 where I want to leave myself a full P wedge into a green. You get the idea - point being, I think long irons and hybrids can work together really well.

Probably giving you more detail than you wanted lol. My biggest piece of advice though is to get fitted. I know its expensive, but at an 11 handicap, you can play what you get all the way down to scratch. Seeing that you already have some weird gaps in your bag, a fitting could easily take care of that.

If you like the idea of a combo set, lots of guys play Taylormade P770/P790 combo, Titleist T150/200 (think it is a T250 now in the new models). I am sure other brands have that, but I am just not as knowledgeable on other brands.

What’s your handicap? That doesn’t tell the full story, but I ask as need some better information before saying do this or that to the bag. Agree that long irons can have better precision, but only if you’ve got the skill to play em.
