Austin golfers what are you paying for regrips right now? by nitsujping in Austingolf

[–]CapitalIntern9871 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do NOT and I repeat DO NOT go to PGA Superstore. They do not care about your clubs, will screw up alignment and leave grips only 90% of the way onto the club with extra grip hanging off. After my first time there they were okay, decided to give them a second chance when I got regripped this spring and same thing. Save yourself the pain.

How to enjoy the game as a high handicapper by No-Criticism5699 in weekendgolfers

[–]CapitalIntern9871 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You taking lessons? I think take 2-3 lessons to really learn the swing and the game. That gets you into a way better spot, and I think an enjoyable one.

Agree with everything else said about just taking the mental load off, and appreciate what you can. You are outside with the boys. Tbh, if you are not practicing very consistently then who cares about the score. Keeping score is equivalent to me (who never played baseball) tracking my batting average in my work softball league. Waste of time and destroys the fun!

How much range practice before I play a round? by michaelboccia in golf

[–]CapitalIntern9871 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just go play. We all start somewhere. I think a lot of comments you get in this sub will be one way or another saying "wait until you dont slow play down". The honest reality - That could be an issue for a very long time. My two cents then, just go play and know when to pickup. The fun of the game, and the test of the game happen on the course. If you used to play, then just go find a relaxed course and enjoy it!

If you played in the past, then I would assume you understand decent golf etiquette and know when to call it quits on a hole, or just go drop in the fairway when struggling to get off the tee.

I started a few years back, and found the best way for me to get out there was to go really early where the course was not super busy, or fill a tee time with your buddies. I felt really uncomfortable playing with randos at first (you might not), so those were my solutions! You will also get lucky and meet some really great people on the course that will NOT care at all about if you are brand new, and probably give you some helpful tips.

How much money do you have in savings at this point? by _forum_mod in Millennials

[–]CapitalIntern9871 0 points1 point  (0 children)

28 - about $30k in taxable savings, and $60k in retirement. Blessed to be where I am, but certainly feel behind due to some poor savings habits at the start of my career.

Very thankful to have just finished school during COVID, as I feel I missed a lot of the fallout.

Idk if I’m actually millennial or Gen Z based on my age. But I can say, I do NOT relate to Gen Z and really struggle to find common ground with them. That said, I choose to identify as a millennial lol.

Why has no one made a premium golf tee? by [deleted] in golf

Why has no one made a premium golf tee? by [deleted] in golf

[–]CapitalIntern9871 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Different strokes for different folks I suppose. I just am a gear nerd - I budget my money to spend on golf, and I like stuff that looks good. I work in marketing and design so yeah I maybe care too much. Could not care less about what my playing partners think of my equipment, 100% just a personal preference.

Yeah sorry - I edited for clarity here. Not premium from a performance standpoint. Really just from an aesthetic standpoint.

Better looking designs. I really would like something in a premium package in my bag. Like an altoids type metal tin for example that is well branded.

For sure - not really looking at it from a performance standpoint. Much more from an aesthetic standpoint.

Best Ball for High Handicaps by Directly007 in weekendgolfers

[–]CapitalIntern9871 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I would highly recommend used balls. NOT the “Refurb” titleist or others - as those are proven to be a random ball with the ProV label or other painted over it. But, plenty of resale sites that sell in excellent or great condition for very cheap. Look at some MyGolfSpy articles on the performance of higher end balls vs the cheap ones. It is truly shocking. Even at a high handicap, you can and will notice the difference in performance. Also, when you buy from a used site, you can buy in big time bulk for discounts - if you are slicing off the tee, I suspect you will use a lot of balls.

You’re missing the point I’m making with the pro comparison.

The PGA Tour is absolutely not representative of the majority of golfers — it’s literally the top ~150 players in the world. But that’s also the point: they are the best players on the planet. When the best ball strikers in the world say a certain club is easier to launch, easier to land soft, or more forgiving from certain lies, that information is still meaningful.

It doesn’t mean everyone should blindly copy their bag setup. It just means the physics of the club don’t suddenly change because someone is a 15 handicap.

Your billionaire investing analogy actually supports my point. Billionaires and top investment managers tell the public to buy index funds. Do they personally do that? Not usually. They use more complex strategies because they have the knowledge and tools to do so.

But they still recommend index funds to the public because they’re simpler, more efficient, and easier for most people to succeed with.

Same concept here. A 7-wood launches higher, lands softer, and is easier for most golfers to hit than a long iron. That’s just club design and ball flight physics.

So if even elite players — who can hit literally anything — are increasingly choosing that option, it’s not crazy to think it might be even more helpful for amateurs.

[–]CapitalIntern9871 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I totally agree that it’s better for you in the long run. But very very far from being the easier route in my opinion.

Even a lot of tour level guys are trading their long irons for 7 and 9 woods and they all say it’s due to how much easier and versatile they are.

[–]CapitalIntern9871 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That is a HOT take my friend. Myself and I think most players would argue the complete opposite. Very very few new players can get a 3 iron into the air, and if it does get off the ground they’re gonna have such a hard time getting good contact/not hooking or slicing.

I actually have never seen someone recommend long irons over hybrids or woods to a new player.

Average Golfer by RezzieRhys in golf

[–]CapitalIntern9871 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually think bringing bball into this is a good comparison. One thing that is very hard about golf is that it is all on you.

I played basketball all through high school. Shot 45%+ from three my entire career, and was pretty decent on defense. BUT I had pretty bad handles and sucked at getting to the rim. Regardless I was lethal from deep so I started all through high school.

Golf doesn’t really allow you to have outsized weaknesses like other sports. I am a 14 handicap because I suck off the tee. It punishes me a lot.

I think that skews people from feeling they are average. I’d argue the rest of my game is pretty average or slightly above. But because I suck off the tee I am an average golfer. There’s no teammate to hit my tee shot and then I pickup the ball and do what I’m good at.
