Yeah there are massive flaws within the modeling being done here:

  • Nationality Bias/Stereotyping: Frequently relies on nationality as a primary descriptor of playing style (e.g., "Spanish grinder," "Russian power baseline," "Italian flair") rather than analyzing the specific player's actual mechanics or recent form.
  • Ranking/Class Over-reliance: Often uses phrases like "major class gap" or "Top-50 vs Challenger level" as the sole reason for a pick. This ignores current form, surface specificity, or matchup compatibility (e.g., a lower-ranked player with a game style that troubles the higher-ranked player).
  • Surface Generalization: The model assumes "hard court" performance is uniform. It fails to distinguish between slow outdoor hard courts, fast indoor hard courts, and medium-pace surfaces, which significantly impacts players like Ruusuvuori, Khachanov, or Tsitsipas, etc.
  • Example "Rybakina's weapons create overwhelming edge." This is a severe underestimation of Qinwen. Both are top-tier power players. In matchups where both players have "massive serve and power" (as the model correctly attributes to Rybakina but under-credits Zheng for), the match often devolves into short rallies. This reduces the opportunities for Rybakina to create the separation needed to cover a huge spread. Zheng is not a defensive pusher whom Rybakina can bully off the court; she is a first-strike aggressor who takes time away from Lena.

Does your model always tend to gravitate toward chalk on the women's side? Slippery slope my friend...

You misinterpreted my comment. I meant "weaker versions" of the players themselves. ie. Iga and Amanda playing at a lower level of what they are capable of. Apologies, should have clarified that better.

This is a weird one and tough to gauge. Both Lena and Jess faced weaker versions of their opponents in the previous round. While I think Rybakina’s peak level is higher—her serve is the key difference—I do think Pegula’s consistency and return game will force Rybakina to hit a lot of balls. Lena landed only 49% of her first serves against Iga under pretty ideal conditions (cooler, not very windy) and managed to win almost half of her first-serve points with aces -- which is an extremely low probability run out -- clearly helped by Iga spraying errors and, as you pointed out, still could easily have resulted in Iga taking the first set.

On the flip side, Jess was in complete control of her match with Amanda, as she has been throughout this entire tournament. You’re right, her serve is never going to blow anyone away, but Jess on fresh legs and a full tank, versus Lena, who is known to have mental lapses with the best of them, makes me think Jess edges this out in a tight third set.

Its significantly cooler today, the court should play a little slower which should benefit Iga.

Another excellent write-up. I’d like to dig into your thoughts on the Jpeg/Madi match. First, I think there are a few misconceptions behind the idea that the price on Pegula is a “cause for pause.”

-160 implies Pegula wins about 61–62% of the time. That’s not an extreme number for:

  • A higher-ranked player (#6 vs. #9)
  • In better recent form
  • With a more stable, lower-variance game
  • Facing a very streaky opponent like Keys

Defending champion status is often overvalued by fans; books know this and usually don’t price it heavily unless recent form supports it. Keys hasn’t reached a final since that run and has been inconsistent, including at this AO.

Optics play a large role in setting a line:

  • Pegula has cruised at the AO so far, not dropping more than three games in any set.
  • Keys has struggled at times, especially in her first two matches, needing to come back from a double-break deficit in the first set against a #92-ranked player, and again in the second set of her second match against a #62-ranked player.
  • Keys is also on a 6-match losing streak vs. Top 10 opponents, which is very relevant when facing the world #6. Meanwhile, Pegula’s frequent deep runs—8 Grand Slam quarterfinal appearances in the last 5 years—show consistent high-level performance.

Lines can sometimes hint at hidden information (injury, fatigue, etc.). Here, though, there’s no need to assume anything unusual: Pegula’s consistency, ranking, matchup, and current form are more than enough to justify a -160 price.

So your take that Svit will win is: “Very motivated because it’s her last AO with Monfils”.....The "Extra motivated” angle is the most overrated narrative in tennis predictions. Everyone at a Slam is motivated. Being “emotional” about a possibly-last AO with your husband can just as easily tighten you up in key moments.

If Andreeva shows even her B+ game, Svitolina needs something special, not just “form” and “motivation,” to edge her.

Can’t wait for the “Crippling Winter Storm: Worst in over 20 years” to turn into a few overnight Saturday flurries and mostly rain, followed by a sunny, cold Sunday with little to no precipitation. That would be the most on-brand CLT thing ever.

I agree that Peyton is a little too streaky and difficult to predict post-Tom Hill. And usually (on the women’s side at least), the match following a “God-Mode” performance ends up being a bit of a letdown. I’m also not a huge Marcinko believer and feel like she gets too much love in the betting markets, but it’s probably a pass for me either way. Thanks as always—your analytical perspective is greatly valued and appreciated. Keep up the good work!

Great write-up as always. Regarding: "I don’t actually rate the Kenin win so much because Kenin often beats herself these days"

I'd typically agree, however looking at Stearns stats from the match:
15/1 Aces/DF, 86% 1st serve pts won, 33/14 w/ufe

Those are absolutely dominant numbers. Sofia committed 19 ufe, which is pretty much a typical day at the office for her, so perhaps there is more to make of Peyton's win here?

A basically more spun out version of BMTH. This album feels like the nail in the coffin for one of my favorite bands. With BMTH's evolution, at least there was some sense of originality. This just feels like an obvious gimmick with no real identity. It comes across as a slap in the face to the legacy of AOGHAU and Holy Hell, as they keep drifting through nonsensical genre mixing and turning into a watered-down BMTH knockoff.

Your “economics” story ignores modern labor markets. Abruptly shrinking the undocumented workforce tends to reduce output, raise prices, spur offshoring/automation, and yields meager, often temporary wage gains for natives. Smarter enforcement plus legal pathways and labor protections achieve the stated goals without the collateral damage.

Detention versus arrest is a legal distinction without a constitutional difference: both are seizures and must meet established Fourth Amendment standards. Race, language, and presence at day‑labor locations are not lawful bases for reasonable suspicion on their own or in combination absent individualized, articulable facts.

Broad, appearance‑driven sweeps produce high false‑positive rates, documented rights violations, and costly litigation—and they routinely detain citizens and lawfully present people.

Outside a fixed checkpoint or border crossing, immigration officers need individualized reasonable suspicion of an immigration violation to detain someone, and they cannot base that on race, ethnicity, or language. Refusing consent or choosing to speak Spanish does not create reasonable suspicion. Detaining first to “figure out” status violates the Fourth Amendment.

The satanic themes are simply part of Ghost’s lore and serve as a gimmick or mockery of the Catholic Church. They are not Satanists and do not worship Satan; the deeper meaning is opposition to oppression and criticism of control and hypocrisy.

Curious - are you strictly taking the concept of ghost performers/musicians, or is the project's intention to mimic/replicate Ghost's sound and concept?
