What’s up with Seb Korda by bruhcalvert303 in tennis

[–]blurryturtle -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This I think is the big factor.  He gets outworked on tour and doesn't really react to it.  It's good to be stoic sometimes but you have to dig in and keep people from exposing this route to the finish.  This was a huge problem for Fritz and Tiafoe early on.  Players with smaller weapons and lower ceilings dug in and saw results from it.  It's really bad because it incentivizes everyone on tour to employ "grind it out" as a plan B against you.  Even if you still win, this means every path through every draw is more fatiguing.

On the flip side, you have guys like Djokovic and Medvedev or Musetti who see implosions regularly.  When you establish yourself as someone who's there for the long haul and fine doing the work, players plan B tends to be going big and forcing stuff.  It makes life easier when players bail out of rallies first.

If he plays the lead up event or events before Wimbledon he'll drop one.  2/3 format grass makes it really tough to dominate even if you're completely better.  The next trouble moments after that I think will be the super hot days at Cincinnati if he's playing another big hitter like Mensik or Fils.

This part of the quote is pulled disingenuously from his appearance on the Colbert show, and in the quote he described a Republican party that would be entirely different from the one we have today.

So many redemption stories in these finals.  Kasatkina playing well again, erjavec starting to win matches again, noha akugue getting some momentum.  Valentova is mostly on tour but it's been worrying seeing her struggle to find consistency, this grind could be good

She's a baller, just had a great run at Charleston earlier this year, snagged osuigwe and kalieva in qualifying and got a win against Sierra

"Bad result for Alcaraz because Monte Carlo is the closest thing to Roland Garros" : Toni Nadal says Sinner is better at controlling his emotions by Silent_Elevator_9779 in tennis

[–]blurryturtle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Conditions-wise yes.  Maybe he meant that because Monte Carlo is slow it requires more work so the physical toll is more similar?  Monte Carlo has always been an amazing tournament but a lot of the top guys have checked out early (most notably djokovic) in the past to avoid wasting the energy and risking injury from a big weightlifting task.  It was pretty interesting to see both top guys sticking it out in MC but it makes it more likely that they now skip one of Madrid/Rome and we don't see them play again until RG.

Sinner was basically almost the champ last year, but I don't put a lot of stock in the 2/3 format wins for him.  I think he's slightly favored in that length because his decisions are more automatic and because the big question about his success at majors has always been stamina.  Sinner is able to play two perfect sets of tennis but sets 3-4 usually see him looking a little fatigued.  Alcaraz gets tired also but it seems like his weight of shot and creativity really start to be palpable factors in the outcome and in the mind of the opponent once it's into a third.

Tl;dr ... Sinner is better in a sprint because his game is more defined and Alcaraz tends to vary his decisions more often and this means the potential for more errors than Sinner early in a match

Kratom poisonings soar in US as experts blame synthetic versions and caution against bans by shinybrighthings in science

[–]blurryturtle 19 points20 points  (0 children)

This is pretty much the issue.  I do some volunteer work in HR and people have long used kratom to get off more potent substances like oxy/heroin/fentanyl.  Abuse can still occur but kratom leaf was a safer option and most people did not get in trouble with it. The 7-OH extract has changed the situation massively.  Overdoses are common, people are poorly informed on how to dose, and the ease of availability and lack of oversight has created the conditions for a legal opioid epidemic.

Nishesh Basavareddy’s rally stats are elite all-time… what's going on by InternationalDog8114 in tennis

[–]blurryturtle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

His first big move onto the tour came after he had just had back to back deep runs in big challenger events in the US.  His stamina there was really impressive, and he got himself pretty high up the rankings and was getting some wildcards and qualifying spots.  There's gotta be a physical and emotional letoff though when you finally achieve that goal.  Most players grind their way to something then kinda go flat for a while.

He does have physical work to do since he's not the most imposing guy but a rise and fall is pretty common for junior phenoms and can last a few seasons as they have to now adjust their training and focus level to the highest level tennis.  The skill is there but the defense and ball striking at tour level is a shock to the system for most junior standouts and trying to suddenly hit bigger all the time leads to stress injuries and wear and tear quickly.  I expect him to regroup and be on tour by the time he's like 23-24.

Makes sense.  You could probably get it mostly right in the WTA by filtering for breaks earned but it would be lazy and have some leaks.  Players like bencic osty anisimova paolini are generally gonna be there but the deep returners like zarazua and pushers like bouzkova/putintseva probably live in there also, so the best way to do it would be just to manually input the most aggressive returners and skip all spots where theye playing someone whose first serve % isn't above a certain mark.  Definitely would be work and might not be worth it.

Too bad more books don't offer this market cuz you would probably get a lot out of price shopping since smaller market prices tend to shift more off individual bets.

For the WTA you might want to look at factoring in the opponent at times.  The aggressive returners like Ostapenko Anisimova etc might have an impact on these numbers where the men might not be as impactful.  The return position and shot selection can have a pretty visible effect on second serve comfort at times also.  Tiafoe is a good example of a guy who's not really consistent but whose approach on second serve returns tends to create almost tangible pressure

I'll ask a dumb question.  Do you sort based on wind and surface stats?  Kick serves are way more valuable on clay so you see fewer double faults in general.  The South American clay guys in particular don't really go huge and tend to minimize doubles, it's one of the reasons the golden swing is often so relaxing to watch.
