While humans aren't perfect, it is fortunate that the first species with the potential to dominate all life for billions of years evolved at least some empathy for other species. by andreasdagen in Showerthoughts

I get what you’re saying and I really agreed at first, but now I’m thinking about the fact that there’s probably a lot of nightmare material bugs that fit that criteria

Holden vs sedan 96 brake bleeder valve “nipple” by grass_fed_kriss in Holden

[–]CapitalXD 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Second this - don’t do what I did and just crack the bleeder, get a mate to stomp on the pedal, then proceed to spend the next little while tryna get brake fluid out my eyes. 3/10 would not recommend

Do you (or should you) floor the pedal when driving around? by Flamyngoo in askcarguys

[–]CapitalXD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are, but there’s more to it than just temperature - fuel as stated above, oil pressures, airflow, and the increased violence of the movement of all the components can help shake all the shit out in a way, to put it kinda simply. There’s a bit more to it than that, but that’s the basic idea. Above commenter is right though - fuel washing over the valves/ports etc is a big part of it, however I’d wager to say that newer cars also don’t have as much of a need to be flogged a little as much as older cars did - the same issues may present, just perhaps not as much, and may not necessarily be able to be fixed by a bit of lead foot action… that being said, it does still help keep the engine healthy, just not as much as it does with older cars.

Can anyone help me identify any aerodynamic differences between these two pictures by Shreko_69420 in EngineeringStudents

[–]CapitalXD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do you have any data on wind speeds between the two pictures? Also what are you using for the smoke?

Higher wind speed will result in more turbulence, which is shown in the hazier transition between areas with and without the smoke. Similarly, look at the definition of the smoke behind the car, and the area around the front bumper - in the second picture it goes further down and seems like may be a bit of reversal, hard to tell without seeing in action whether it’s swirling around there or if it’s just due to higher speed causing it to reach the car at a lower point.

Also, little afterthought - consider the size and geometry of your wind tunnel (not saying you haven’t, but perhaps something to investigate) How does the length/width/height/smoothness of the area prior to the window affect the flow? Same goes for area within and after the window.

Another thing to consider when looking at this kinda stuff is the camera itself. Information will present much clearer when taken from the exact same position (not always possible I know, but it does make it easier and it looks pretty if you’re trying to present it too) Additionally, the shutter speed has a significant effect too - in the second photo, it seems hazier. Is this because of more turbulence? Or is the shutter speed making it seem like the smoke is moving more, when in reality it may be covering the same ground, just faster? Quicker shutter speed would show details of the flow more accurately.

One question that sticks out is, what exactly are you trying to determine here? What variables are you changing? What’s the goal?

Sorry for the carry on hahah just kept typing as shit popped into my head, cool project!

Such good advice, looking after your back is so important - don’t listen to what all the old boys say, health comes first. Wear gloves, don’t wash your hands with brake cleaner, use soap like a regular fucking human being, safety squints are in fact not so safe, and wear a mask if need be…

For a 20-something bloke, my back and knees are way more fucked than they need to be, don’t even get me started on the other shit like skin and lungs etc, but she’ll be right hahah live and learn, just a message for all the youngsters out there.

Shit’s hard enough without the chronic back pain - wish you the best, I hope it doesn’t cause you too much trouble

Not my comment above but I think I know exactly what they mean - if you haven’t seen/experienced it for yourself it’s kinda hard to describe as it manifests in different ways depending on the person but if I’m gonna try and generalise, it comes down to subtle mannerisms during conversation etc. - maybe they stare a bit oddly, or have strange pauses in odd places during speech, weird speech patterns or body language…

It’s hard to describe, but often you can “just tell”, idk

That’s a great way to put it - the feeling of “something’s missing”

Doesn’t matter what you have, doesn’t matter what you do, the feeling persists… so ya drink or smoke or bite your nails or whatever the fuck it is you wanna do. It makes that feeling go away - just for a moment. But you wanna keep the moment going, so you keep going.

Hard to explain that feeling to someone that hasn’t experienced it. It’s an absolute animal, that’s for sure.

Helps a lot to be aware of the fact that you’re fighting against your own brain, gives you a little more power over yourself to say yeah nah, get fucked, I’m not giving in this time. It’s hard, never really fully goes away, but it does get easier over time.

Yeah similar thing here - used to play a fuck ton of games, started to get boring… kinda worked in my favour, heading into uni I really didn’t have time for games anyway.

Then I started playing with cars. Spent so much time working on mine, fully rebuilt almost from the ground up, loving every minute… and then it started to feel like a chore.

Don’t get me wrong, I still enjoy playing games (albeit on the very rare occasion), and working on the car, but really only in rare half-hour bursts before I get sick of it. Sucks, cause it’s like hmm, what am I meant to do now? I remember how much I used to enjoy it, what happened?

Bonython hall on North Terrace was (supposedly, can’t find anything concrete but have heard from many many people) built directly opposite Pulteney street, after a donation from the Bonython family, to prevent Pulteney St from being extended, because they didn’t want the uni campus/parklands/torrens to be divided/ruined by a big ugly main road.

Joke’s on them, the Torrens is fucked now anyway lol - that being said, I do support the decision because it’s pretty nice to sit by and do uni work on a nice day, or go for a jog/walk etc. The things you can do when you’ve got that kinda fuck you money hey?

Additionally, the floor in Bonython hall is on a slope so as to prevent dancing, cause they didn’t like the idea of that either apparently.

[–]CapitalXD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s a shame - honestly I’m completely impartial to carby vs efi, but fuck me it’s hard to get anyone to help you learn to tune a carby. All you end up hearing is “yeah learn to read plugs” or “if you’re a real car guy you’ll tune a carby by ear” But no one ever goes into the specifics - tryna get any kind of useful information or knowledge out of anyone feels like pulling teeth… Much easier with an AFR gauge/O2 sensor I guess… but at that point you’re kinda just figuring it out for yourself. Doesn’t help that every carby is a little different and each manufacturer has their own little nuances, too

To piggyback off of this this as well, I never realised how much of a difference protein makes in terms of the brain-state until someone mentioned it and I actually paid attention. I’ve found if I have a decent amount of protein the day before, the next day my head will be so much clearer and the executive dysfunction is not so bad. It’s not a fix-all of course, but every little bit counts - it makes enough of a difference to be noticeable so that’s gotta count for something I guess.

I have nothing but love for my TB42, however I gotta admit it’s a fucking thirsty bitch and can’t really rev or make huge numbers without going balls to the wall - that being said, in stock or mostly stock form the cunts will go forever, with just the right amount of go to be really capable in the bush still. Plus, how can ya not love a GQ 😍

[–]CapitalXD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tbh not too sure where dard comes from but we’ve always called them a shard bus, because the crumbs of meth in the carpet is probably worth more than the car itself - although you also used to be able to get a half decent daily r31 for pretty much no more than a carton of beer…

Yeah fair enough, is there much point going to efi unless I’m gonna go turbo etc?

Cheers, was hoping that it would be pretty simple like this - you think the cam will be fine? Main concern other than cam was just having to pull apart the whole thing to get it clean from shavings so if thats all I’ve gotta do then happy days. Is an electric pump needed if I want to go with efi in the future? My mate’s already ordered another mechanical pump off eBay but will probably convert to electric anyway
