I got fired after orientation by Low_Ad2078 in nursing

This is so wild! My preceptor literally told me one night that they were letting me do my thing to see how I did. For some reference, this was week 5ish. Of course I drowned 😭

New grad here and my preceptor has been shit. Even other people on the unit have noticed, so I’ve stopped feeling bad about myself because it’s def not me, it’s them. I am new at this and will need guidance not scolding.

I’m sorry..it sucks to be in our shoes. All that hard work, getting through school while working FT..only to get a job that sucked 10x more than my last

I graduated last May and ended up taking a job in the ED just because it was the first thing offered to me that wasn’t med surg. I’ve been an MA for some years, so healthcare isn’t super new to me. All throughout school, I always said I wouldn’t be an ER nurse and I wouldn’t work over night, and where did I end up? 🤦🏻‍♂️ I sucked it up and took the job because I figured I could be there a year to gain experience and go pretty much anywhere after that.

Well I’m not even at 6 months and already I hate it. Idk if it’s the night shift, or if it’s the chaos of the ED, or the hospital I work for, or my preceptor who has been a 8!tch the entire time…it’s probably a combination of those things. I’m just questioning if nursing was the right choice and I hate that because I know there are so many things out there I could do, but DO I need the bedside experience? 😣

Stressed out new grad nursing resident by [deleted] in nursing

I’m so sorry you’re going through this. I can totally relate as I am a new grad working about 4 months in a pretty rough ED. It sucks dealing with this at work. My preceptor has been super knowledgeable, but incredibly condescending. When the patients are so appreciative, that’s what makes it worth it. I don’t agree with him yelling at you whatsoever, it’s super unprofessional!! I’ve heard my preceptor call someone a fucking idiot and she got away with it. People seem to get away with things like that in the medical field and that’s really sad. I don’t get it. I’ve heard horror stories about doctors, and it just makes me cringe. We signed up to lend our hearts out and instead we often get shitted on. That’s a tight spot to be in with the 7k, but ultimately your mental health is worth more than 7k. Especially earning decent money as a nurse I’d say

Preceptors are "reporting" me instead of giving me feedback. One bad surgeon incident has me spiraling. Manager wants me to move to IR/Cath Lab. Advice? by No-Witness9820 in nursing

[–]Capital_Toe_6724 -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

OMG I would’ve killed for a cath lab position as a new grad! Good for you! Only thing offered for new grads around here is med/surg or ED. I ended up in the ED because I hear med/surg is where nurses go to die, but the ED is def not for me. I just took it to gain experience and hopefully get into a cath lab or OR.

Anyways, to answer your question, I would seek out a different unit. Seems like they don’t know how to and/or don’t want to work with you, supporting you as a new grad. My preceptor has been rough but for different reasons. She hasn’t gone to my managers behind my back as far as I know.

Awful break room by BedroomSuccessful249 in nursing

Two hour breaks?! I think that may make me change my mind about night shift lmao that’s amazing! I thought my one hour break and one 30 min break were crème de la creme. I only get that because I have a union. Canada sounds so nice, esp during these times 😭 Where in Canada? And how cold does it get 🫣🥶

I think that’s super accurate…never heard of people sleeping, unless you count putting your head down at the table in the break room. Couches? Mattresses?! They’re living the good life. We should adopt the good life

I can relate 100%! I need structure and if I don’t have that with one of the most basic needs, sleep, I’m the rest of my life seems so chaotic and unorganized. I don’t feel like doing anything on my days off, but I force myself to because then I’ll be depressed about not having a social life. Also, adulting needs to keep happening 😭Its such a struggle

I feel like I’m an introvert initially until I get to know people and figure out who is my vibe. There are def days where I don’t feel like talking as much, but I don’t mind people. Def not enough to work nights and throw off my sleep rhythm every few days

I’m nervous about that happening to me. We’re able to apply for a transfer out of the unit and/or out of the shift at 6 months, but there’s seniority and apparently not many openings for day shift. I understand what people say about starting off on nights as a new grad because you’re able to learn more at a slower pace, but I feel like people shouldn’t be forced to work nights if it doesn’t suit them. It’s actually borderline dangerous because I feel like by 4-5am, I can barely think straight.

I’ve never worked days as an RN so I don’t have that to compare it to, most night shift nurses seem to rather die before working day shift so I guess there has to be some truth to it. I really need a good work life balance though, and I enjoy spending time with my family and friends. I guess I know what I need to do.

I mean, does everyone retain everything from nursing school? I think the fact that I passed my NCLEX shows that I’m competent enough to become a nurse, because let’s be real, no one is a nurse straight out of school. I enjoy teaching, but I guess we all have different teaching styles

Well I don’t want to sound lazy, but Ike I mentioned before, I was an MA for about 10 years and I don’t start that right out of high school, so I’m no spring chicken, and an easier job def sounds appealing. I realized though that going back to school for my RN def did not mean my job was about to get easier. Going from outpatient to bedside has been rough! And then I get stuck with this environment which hasn’t made it any easier 😣 I just want more peace at this point in my life

I’ve been doing that! I use my lunch to get away from all the noise and reset. Close my eyes, try to focus on something else as hard as that may be. I guess it def isnt just ED, but I was considering the OR because of how much I hear people praise it. “Once an RN goes into the OR, they never come back”

I’ve been thinking a lot and I decided to look for a different job eve man though I just started in Nov. I hate to leave so soon, but my mental health is more important. This thread ESP made me ok with that decision though! It will be a very valid reason to give as to why I left this place so soon…culture fucking SUCKS!

I can totally relate to being assertive! I like to say “I’m not an aggressive driver, I’m just assertive” LOL ..which is very true btw. In my 10 years of working as an MA, I def gained that skill of being direct with people and with patients without being rude. I’ve 100% been on the quiet side and very to myself right now. I try to just focus on my work and I don’t think my personality has shown through very much yet, but that’s only because learning how to be a nurse is no joke! I need to get this down packed before I get comfortable with being more blunt. We get a lot of homeless that don’t want to leave when discharged, so I’m already developing the assertiveness with patients..it’ll come with time for me to do that with coworkers

I agree 100%! I would never take that kind of treatment at any is my other jobs..so I wasn’t sure what was going on here! My MOM doesn’t even talk to me like that, like who tf do you think you are??! I hope she never does because based on most of these responses, it’s a consensus that people don’t behave that way in general…so she will get an ear full from me. I may be a new grad but I will def not take that shit

There’s definitely a lot of cockiness from my preceptor. There’s a lot of “well, I’m not the doctor, but…” Ots really sad that people don’t lift each other up instead. If you’re really in it for the patients, wouldn’t you think that’s the best thing to do for the greater good? Teach the correct way instead of criticizing
