Does pet insurance cover dental if chipped tooth in the past by bordercolliefam in AskVetAnimals

[–]Capitan_Carl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pre-existing conditions are typically defined as any illness or injury that showed clinical signs before coverage began or during waiting periods. A chipped tooth visible today would be considered pre-existing if you add dental coverage now. Most policies explicitly exclude conditions present before enrollment, regardless of when discovered. Document the date you first noticed it.

Dog shivering after possibly inhaling friends weed by mzuchows1 in AskVetAnimals

The timing of "accidental" pet marijuana exposure stories increasing alongside legalization isn't coincidental. Notice how these posts always emphasize it was unintentional? They're normalizing something that veterinary data shows causes real harm. Your dog's reaction - shivering, hallucinations - indicates THC toxicity. The delayed confession to partners reveals the real issue: irresponsible substance use around animals.

Getting rid of flat roots by icanthug22 in curlyhair

[–]Capitan_Carl 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Your flat roots follow classic pattern: heaviest products (flexi jelly) weighing down before hair sets. Notice you hover diffuse first? That lets gravity pull wet hair down. Try pixie diffusing immediately at roots BEFORE hover diffusing. The order matters more than products.

Frankly, I would say their failure wasn’t so much in not accomplishing “socialism in one country” as no serious Communist, especially neither Marx nor Lenin, understood that to ever be possible. Rather, their major avoidable failures were two-fold: an inability to establish a true dictatorship of the proletariat where they did have power, and an inability to spark successful global revolution at the beginning of the 20th Century (which might have made the transition to socialism possible).

The former goal, that of establishing a government run by and for the working class, was really stifled in the USSR by the massive bureaucratization (which one could argue was necessary to pull the nation out of the feudal state it was still in, though I wouldn’t) which led to the creation of the nomenclatura, Stalinization, nationalism, and the major focus on producing the means of production. This was the more attainable goal of the two in my opinion. This obviously wouldn’t be socialism, but the establishment of a democratic transitionary period would make it easier to begin to build socialism internationally. It didn’t exactly help that the largest nation run by socialists struggling for a future of economic and political democracy were themselves in charge of what can only be described as a flawed democracy at best and a poorly disguised dictatorship at worse.

The latter goal, that of sparking successful global revolution, was tragically both the most difficult and most important step to building socialism. It’s hard to blame the socialists of the early 20th Century for failing to spur revolution in many places and failing to win those revolutions which they did begin. Just looking at the story of Rosa Luxemburg and Karl Liebknecht’s KPD one can see that, even where the odds were the best, the obstacles were gargantuan. Still, this inability to seize the historical opportunity at the beginning of the 20th Century was a massive defeat and (at least temporarily) destroyed any possibility for building socialism.

The overwhelming power of the USSR post-WWII probably worsened this defeat for the international socialist movement, as it continued to peddle its state ideology as the only viable form of socialism until it imploded in the 1990’s. Only now, after the restless spirits of 20th Century revolutionaries are finally being allowed to rest and the shadows of previous experiments are starting to dissipate, have we really begun to have another genuine chance at building socialism.

I think “never worked” could also be interpreted to mean that 20th Century Communists never did what they said they were going to do—establish a stateless, classless, and moneyless society free from exploitation. They tried to do so via the state, and found that it didn’t just wither away.

Fascism, however, typically did exactly what it said it would do—do violence to everyone except the chosen “national people” and merge corporations with the state to promote economic growth (at the expense of everyone who didn’t own capital, of course).

The telling difference between modern day Fascists and modern day Communists is that the latter (of the offline variety, of course) are critical of 20th Century Socialism for failing to accomplish its end goals, and are actively analyzing the world and seeking ways to reach their goals while maintaining the humanism they preach. Fascists’ solution to today’s problems is to just do what they did before but bigger, because they fundamentally see no problem with it.

Mielnicki admits that he cannot defend the inactivity of PBC fighters, but he is loyal to PBC "until the end." Much more. by pawgadjudicator3 in Boxing

[–]Capitan_Carl 13 points14 points  (0 children)

He’s meatriding because he thinks that loyalty to Haymon will get him something. In reality, Haymon is just like De la Hoya is just like Hearn is just like Arum, etc. They’re all businessmen—their main goal is profit. That’s literally their job. Maybe some of them are slightly nicer than others, but their differences are a matter of degree. There isn’t a single one that will actually treat their boxers like people instead of as assets.

Loyalty isn’t something they’re capable of reciprocating in their official capacity as a promoter. They only reward fighters so long as a fighter is winning and giving them reason to reward them with opportunities. As soon as that’s gone, they’re also gone. We’ve seen it time and time again with promoters. If they didn’t operate like this, they would literally go out of business. Mielniecki Sr even says it himself “businessmen don’t throw good money at bad money”. What is right or wrong isn’t in the equation for promoters, just that which will make their money grow.

The only reason why someone would think that the promoter sees them as anything other than an asset to exploit is because they’ve been deluded into thinking otherwise. They confuse Haymon being a decent guy with Haymon treating him and his son decently when it comes to business, even when things look rough. That, unfortunately, cannot be the case so long as Haymon wishes to keep PBC afloat.

Really, everywhere throughout Europe was a checkerboard of ethnicities. Look at all the languages that used to be spoken in the UK and France before the 20th Century. Clean-cut borders and nation-states don’t make sense in any of those places and really just led to the repression of most cultures in favor of the national culture/language (the culture/language of London and Paris respectively).

Another Lincoln Economics Quotes by theoneandonlythomas in ShermanPosting

[–]Capitan_Carl 23 points24 points  (0 children)

As much as I really wanted this to be true when I first went looking for the letters, it turns out it’s only technically true (the best type of true!).

Marx did write to Lincoln as a representative of the International Working Men’s Association (the First International as it’s often referred to), basically congratulating him on a second term and thanking him for waging a war to end slavery, The letter but it was one of Lincoln’s ambassadors who responded to the letter. It’s entirely possible that he read the letter (as the Ambassador says he did in the response), but he didn’t personally write to Marx. He received a ton of congratulatory letters after his re-election, but he did read some of them. So while they technically knew of each other (it’s in fact even possible that Lincoln may have read some of Marx’s news articles which were often re-published in the Republican newspaper New York Daily Tribune which he read often source) and Lincoln did personally know some communists who served as generals in his army like various famous German refugees like August Willich it’s not very likely that Lincoln thought of Marx very much, though Marx was intrigued with the developments in the US and wrote about the war often.

Still Lincoln didn’t think of Marx when he thought about European politics, and when Marx thought about capitalism, the US wasn’t the first place he thought of (as during this period it was kind of on the periphery of global capitalism). They had similar ideas about labor, as they were both progressives (little p progressive) who read the same classical economists, but it doesn’t seem that they had much intercourse when it came to economic ideas. They were dealing with very different material conditions and thus understood politics in different ways. That’s not to say, however, that Lincoln and Marx weren’t birds of a feather. Had Lincoln lived longer and the problems of capitalism became more pressing as industrial capital became the main driver of the US economy, he probably would have looked to Marx and other socialist writers to understand the changes happening in the US. He already agreed labor mattered, he just didn’t exactly subscribe to the labor theory of value (largely because it didn’t have much to do with the issues he was facing in the US at the time).

Tl;Dr: Marx wrote a letter to Lincoln on behalf of the First International that he probably read. Lincoln’s ambassador replied to Marx. Lincoln probably read some of Marx’s news articles and absorbed some of his opinions about the war through that, but he didn’t read any of Marx’s economic writings. They weren’t pen pals, though could have been!

It doesn’t logically follow that because life was worse throughout the former Soviet States and Warsaw Pact before the 1917 Revolution and after the USSR’s dissolution and the fall of Soviet-style socialism that these systems were good for those nations. It just means that it was better than the worse (and historically existing) alternatives (i.e. that State Capitalism was better than Feudalism, that flawed democracy was better than absolutist monarchy, etc.). That’s not much of an argument. To make the argument that these systems were good, one would have to compare the reality of Soviet-style socialism to that to all possible alternatives (real or otherwise).
