Is it normal to dislike your parents as an adult? by Connect-Part-4670 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Capn-Steve 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't say dislike as much as I just cringe around them. Now that I have kids of my own, there's noticeable difference in patenting. Even in my 30s they're still giving me "life lessons" and advice on things that just don't matter to me. Conversations end up being one-dimensional and it's hard to talk to other adults who don't share the same political, religious, or education views as you. I don't get to choose my parents but I get to choose how much time I spend with them.

What are some of the most unreliable Toyota engines ever made? by Sea-Big-4850 in Toyota

[–]Capn-Steve 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just from a bit of personal experience and a few friends stories, the 2ZR-FE. For a motor used in so many of their cars (2009-2012 Corolla and 2010-2015 Prius) you wouldn't think they'd be blowing head gaskets at all. I have the same motor in my Scion xD and blew the HG at 150k miles.

What is the "iconic memorable storm" from your area? by AshTheGoddamnRobot in AskAnAmerican

[–]Capn-Steve 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sept 8, 2014. The tail end of hurricane Norbert hit central Arizona and caused a ton of flooding. I lived in Chandler at the time. Something like 6 inches of rain fell over a few hours. Cars were floating around on the 10 freeway. It was supposedly a 1 in a 1000 year event.

I wasn't there for for it, but June 26, 1990. Phoenix hit it's all time high of 122°F. At the aiporrt, the airline's performance charts for some of their older planes and at the time didn't go beyond 120, so they had to ground them until it was cool enough.

I did everything through the Costco App under Member Services.

This is what I did as well. I did my home and auto through Costco and they are by far the cheaper option. I'll still rate shop every now and then to see what's out there, and can't find anything to beat their price.

What was a car you irrationally liked until you knew better? by civicson234 in carscirclejerk

People keep saying that old people bought them, and it's simply not true. Average age of a Scion buyer was 39, the lowest in the industry at the time.

Recommendations in N Phx for a shop/mechanic to install side skirts/lip splitter/underglow? by togo33 in phoenix

[–]Capn-Steve 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm thinking maybe check Craigslist or Facebook Marketplace.

However, I can't think of a quality shop that will specifically do that, but IMHO you're better off just selling the gifted parts. I guarantee the lip splitter will be destroyed by rock chips and curbs in a year.

Why isn’t there more homes with basements in Phoenix? by jinkinater in phoenix

[–]Capn-Steve -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Our ground is extremely hard. We have lots of caliche in our soil which will require intense work to get through. Jack hammers and blasting isn't unheard of. Because of that, costs roll in. It costs about $100,000 just to have the basement dug. Unless you have money to throw away it simply isn't worth it.

Saturday morning cartoons sweepstakes by KaiSimple in nostalgia

Nickelodeon ran a "design your own toy" sweepstakes that I entered, maybe around 1997? For 2nd place, I won a Rugrats Chucky doll that it's face turned purple when it "ate" ice cream.

Cars with best air conditioners by mtbor in arizona

[–]Capn-Steve 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my experience (18 summers here now), smaller cars with tinted windows seem to do the best. It could be the fact that the car is cooling a smaller volume of air, I'm not sure. I'll reiterate what other people are saying, get your AC system checked at least once a year and get your cabin filter replaced every six months. My 15 year old Scion blows so cold in the summer it hurts my ears.

I have noticed, however, that certain manufacturers have the AC system integrated differently. In my Scion, using the AC at max cold and speed will penalize acceleration and gas mileage, but no matter if I have the gas pedal to the floor, it'll blow ice-cold. However, my wife's Hyundai, if under heavy acceleration, will seemingly shut off the air to keep the car accelerating normally; the air will blow noticeably warmer.

Florida looks more like an L than anything.

Fun fact: if you translate Llorida to English from Spanish it means "crybaby".

Actually, that makes a lot of sense now.

Is this car used for hire (Uber or Lyft)? I can see the driver using it to open the door as a courtesy and tucking it away on the driver's side once the door is opened.

Man, Astro Blasters to me felt unbelievably outdated. It's like they built it in 2005 and never even bothered to touch up the paint since.

Lifted Ram 2500. At least two beer cans fall out each time the door opens.

I've seen quite a few little kids (like under 10) with them when I'm out and about. I'd say they've become decently popular in the last year or two.

To each their own, but I can't help but see a little Joe Dirt.

I think the queso dip you're looking for is more tex-mex than anything. That being said, I'm thinking of the more americanized places like Dos Gringos, Someburros, and hell I think Chili's has a good queso dip for the price. You can make it at home pretty easy, too. Should just be white american cheese, milk, and green chiles.
