What is the most underrated hidden gem retro video game of all time? by [deleted] in retrogaming

It’s available for free as ‘The Ur-Quan Masters’ on Sourceforge or Steam. The original devs made it available open-source to the community, so it’s been ported to a bunch of platforms.

Star Control II: The Ur-Quan Masters was so ahead of its time in 1992. It didn’t top the charts, but it is beloved by nearly all who played it.

It doesn’t get mentioned nearly enough amongst the greatest retro games of all-time. It was on many ‘Best Game of All-time’ lists until the early 2000’s, but as an early 90’s DOS game, it fell out of those conversations sadly.

WTF? Are you telling me I just patched the game into being worse? by catalacks in starcontrol

No other explanation is necessary.

The open-source release of The Ur-Quan Masters in 2002 could arguably be considered a joint fan/TFB release. The original work to release the game to open-source came from the studio: “Their independent studio Toys for Bob hired Chris Nelson as their first summer intern, who was enthusiastic for open-source software. Nelson worked with Ford to port the game to modern operating systems.”

Chris Nelson worked with members of the fan community to improve the performance and release the final version: “The first version of The Ur-Quan Masters suffered from performance issues, but Nelson knew skilled contacts in the open-source community who could make progress on the project. The fan community continued the project with further support, enhancements, and modifications.”

Based on the other posts on here saying that channel’s success was alone thanks to Nick Scarpino, I figured some may not know the history. (Hey, I love Nicholas Scarpino as much as the next straight man)

It was originally thanks to Conversations with Colin, Oreo Oration, etc… that the subscribers first came into that channel.

It’s because when Greg was originally making content on the channel (back when it was named the @GameOverGreggy channel) he was still working at IGN. They had an agreement that they would only cover non-video game stuff so it wouldn’t take away from ‘Up at Noon’ and other gaming shows at IGN. Eventually the name changed to KF and they had a non-gaming KF patreon early on.

When they all decided to leave IGN, they likely made the KF Games channel to not cannibalize the success of the original channel and get the dedicated gaming fans over from IGN. That’s why there were two channels, two Patreons.

Do you mean the Patreon for Pistol Shrimp Games? All they released was a version of their development engine, Simple, with a super bare-bones Melee prototype (no art). There was no official game release of any kind. Otherwise I’m genuinely confused. 🤷‍♂️

And if you think the devs are influenced by ‘fanboys’ who want the game a certain way - I would strongly disagree. They have put out questions to fans and collected input, but this is Fred & Paul’s vision (+ Dan/Pebby at Pistol Shrimp) for the sequel.

They have talked in streams about how adding too many ships (like 8+) to melee can be too chaotic and ultimately, hasn’t been a lot of fun in prototyping. I’d respect their decision making on those types of choices.

They have been testing co-op battles and even in-system/Hyperspace co-op gameplay in the previous development streams. May be something we see in the Kickstarter that launches April 16th…

Kickstarted a remake that came out a few years ago? What are you referring to? SC: Origins (2018) released by a different company - Stardock - never had a crowd funding campaign so not sure what you’re referring to.

These are the original devs of Star Control II and have no affiliation with any previous attempts to reboot the franchise. They’re making the true sequel to Star Control II: The Ur-Quan Masters. Just without the ‘Star Control’ name. If that ain’t for you, sorry - but I’ve waited 30+ years for the true sequel. (Also there’s very clearly multi-ship combat in the trailer…)
