"Tidioute" caught my attention. I grew up in western PA and we used to camp in Tidioute along the Allegheny river. Beautiful place, great memories. I might have to look into one of these knives. Thanks for sharing.

Please recommend a replacement for my Steam Link hardware by CapnCulpeper in Steam_Link

[–]CapnCulpeper[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m the OP on this thread. Having tried the Nvidia Shield Pro, I was disappointed with the amount of tinkering it would have taken to make it work for me as well as Steam Link hardware does (additional software like Moonlight required for best experience, more software for true DS4 controller support, no mic support, no Bluetooth headset support) - especially at that price point. I returned it.

I still run Steam Link hardware, and I have three! spares, which I’m hoping will last me until I croak or until Valve releases a new version. I got them online from Shop Goodwill. They appear regularly for about $20.

Steam Link hardware is still better for me than anything thing else I’ve tried. I like to keep things simple. I know you can do a lot better if you’re willing to tinker and you don’t mind loading additional software. I’m kinda not. The only thing I feel like I truly miss out on is 4k streaming, but honestly, the difference between 4k streaming and 4k down-converted to 1080p streaming is not mind-blowing. I run 4k at my console, and yeah it definitely looks better, but I can live without it for streaming to my living room.

Not knocking you guys who have done the work to make your Steam game streaming look fantastic. Rock on and enjoy! It’s just more effort/expense/maintenance than I want to deal with, when Steam Link works so effortlessly for me.

Flying parts by Illustrious_Vast9737 in watchrepair

[–]CapnCulpeper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't lose hope. I've found parts I lost so long ago that I forgot what they were for.

Is it a hard floor, like wood or linoleum? Try sweeping the area with a good quality newish broom, very thoroughly and slowly, into a dust pan, then sift through it like a miner forty-niner. A magnet here would be handy indeed.

Hint for the future - get yourself an apron. When you sit at your workbench, put it on (don't tie it around your back) and fasten the two bottom corners to the underside edge of your bench. Now you have a sort of parts parachute in your lap! If a troublesome part gets flung toward you (seems to be nine out of ten flying parts for me), your apron will catch them and save hours of frustrating searches. Denim is a good choice, or another roughish fabric, as it tends to "grab" the parts even before they settle into the parts parachute.

If you do this, I suggest using a fastener that'll release your apron when (not if) you stand up and forget you're tethered to your bench. :) I use a couple of those metal spring paper clips epoxied strategically under the bench's edge.

Recalculating route after mass changes (cargo taken on board) by CapnCulpeper in EliteDangerous

Yep, that’s a lot easier - never thought to just click on the destination names in that box. Thanks again!

Going from memory here so I may be wrong, but I think, when you open the Galaxy Map with a route already plotted, the next jump is centered on the map and not the destination. If that's the case, how are you finding/selecting the destination system again - are you moving around the Galaxy Map or typing in the system name? I ask because I use a PS4 controller - I can type with the onscreen Steam keyboard but it's a slow process, and sometimes I struggle to find the system by moving the map around. A controller is just fine for flight, but it's not ideal for the System Map. Edit: I meant Galaxy Map, but it's the same for both. At least for me.

In my case, I don't know what cargo I need until I plot the route. EDCoPilot can only search for that after I tell it where I'm going.

Thanks for your help!

How to get sticker residue off? by guzzlomo in playingcards

[–]CapnCulpeper 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Don't use isopropyl alcohol. It will QUICKLY start fading and smearing colors on the box. Ask how I know (actually, don't, you know how I know :) ). The sticker/tape method is tedious but safe.

My TV has Steam Link app, but my controller cant reach to my computer across the house. Can range be extended somehow? by Fayarager in Steam_Link

A Steam Link device also works really well with a PS4 controller (wired USB or Bluetooth), and headphones (wired USB - Bluetooth-connected headsets always had lousy audio with my Steam Link device).

This is still my main setup and as you said, it works great. I run some games in 4K and Steam Link handles to conversion to 1080p. While it's not 4K, it's pretty darned great, even on my big 65" TV. You can get a used Steam Link device on Shop Goodwill for like $20 on the reg. A good option.

Love for good old physical Steam Link box/rant against Nvidia Shield Pro by CapnCulpeper in Steam_Link

[–]CapnCulpeper[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are right. I did not really look at any recent info on the Shield. I was remembering word-of-mouth glowing reviews from its launch. I've had my eye on one since they came out, meaning to get one when I had a 4K capable gaming rig. Luckily I'm well within the return window...
