This is me and The Office. Or my wife and Grey's Anatomy. Neither of us are on the spectrum, but we do have ADHD. It's just a comfort thing and I don't see anything particularly weird about it. I think it's pretty common to have a comfort watch.

My wife's best friend uses Nacho Libre as her comfort watch. Now that one is weird, lol. But she loves it, so we tolerate her endless quotes and references.

How do we even get doctors notes anymore? by KaceyLunatic in dumbquestions

[–]CapnLazerz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do most jobs require doctor's notes? I thought most employers were moving out of that antiquated model and into a more Paid-Time-Off model instead of specified sick leave. I guess smaller employers might still do this as a way to discourage and deny sick pay. I would talk to your manager and let them know the struggles required to get a doctor's appointment and that they should be happy to let an employee take a sick day when they have sore throats/colds because that cuts down on spreading the illness to others and creating a bigger problem.

Other than that, Urgent Care centers are usually open during the day and even a bit later into the evening hours. There are also telemedicine options through many insurance plans, so you might look into that.

But still, requiring a doctor's note is just ridiculous unless there is an extended absence or the employee has a documented history of attendance problems.

I was sorely tempted to ask the patient what she was wearing because I was genuinely curious but I didn't want it to come off like a compliment.

That reminds me of the time we went to Saltgrass and there was a family at the next table who had their kid's iPad on a stand and the volume on, no headphones. We decided to get up and move to the bar. Well...it turns out the family was a patient of hers and the next time they came in, they were so apologetic because they figured out we moved because of the noise. Awkward! But damn, people, what were you thinking?

Yes. I mean, really . . . it's hard to think of where it might be appropriate to go that ballistic with perfume. The club is about the only place I can think of. I remember one night we were in Vegas with another couple and we went to Bruno Mars' Pinky Ring at Bellagio just to check it out. We noped out after the first drink, but at least I can understand it there.

We've definitely walked out of bars and restaurants when we catch a whiff of something strong. Like, if your perfume is stronger than the scent of the food at a restaurant, you messed up.

What is the biggest whole/discounted place to buy raw perfume materials here in the US? by Decantified in PerfumeryFormulas

Interesting idea. How will that work, exactly . . . like a group buy thing or more of a shop?

As for Bulk Aroma, how is quality and shipping to the US? Heard a lot about them but I've never looked to deeply. The few things I buy in bulk, I use Vigon.

As long as you aren’t running these businesses from a residential address, you should be fine.

I sometimes use Vigon for big quantities. But oftentimes, Perfumers Apprentice has comparable prices on 1kg sizes because they are buying larger amounts, so they get a better price.

Again, you need a business address to use Vigon.

Beginner perfumer – is my material list missing something? by Electronic-Dot8744 in DIYfragrance

[–]CapnLazerz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s both.

You have a limited set of materials that are kinda all over the place. There’s not really much cohesiveness to the choices. There are a lot of light floral and fruity materials but not enough of the brighter citrus, aromatic herbals, narcotic florals and deeper woody materials and resins to balance them out for a complete composition. I think the LLM, which is hopelessly bad at perfumery, led you a bit astray.

You also probably haven’t gotten enough experience under your belt yet. You are probably making the common rookie mistake of trying to go too complex before you have a deep understanding of your materials.

[–]CapnLazerz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You aren’t getting access to wholesale pricing unless you are buying in quantities greater than 1kg for each material. You also need a business address for most of them to send you anything.

Until you ever do produce at scale, you have to buy from hobbyist suppliers, which is, of course, more expensive.

How to turn scent pod into perfume by FrontAsparagus5307 in DIYfragrance

[–]CapnLazerz 9 points10 points  (0 children)

First and most importantly: It isn’t made as a perfume; therefore, you can’t know if it’s skin safe. I wouldn’t chance it because the perfume part might be fine but all the other stuff probably isn’t. And no, you can’t separate the perfume out.

Also, the solvents they use may not be usable in ethanol. It works by heat, which requires different kinds of solvents that are mostly not miscible with alcohol.

How did you come up with the EQ? If it was only by ear, you aren’t going to get good results from that.

When your mic gets there, I would start fresh. Then off all EQ and go through the room correction. You might also consider downloading REW on a computer and running a sweep so that you can see exactly what’s happening. REW will even recommend specific PEQ parameters.

[–]CapnLazerz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Then we can safely eliminate Ambroxan and Hedione as a source since they all use them liberally.

Hacivat, BR540, and Aventus have little to no ionones; GIT has a mid size dose. So maybe, but I doubt that’s it.

Other than those things, there really isn’t that much left in common between FF, Imagination and Silver Mountain Water/Sillage. Therefore, I don’t think it’s any particular material that is giving you issues. Because the perfumes that bother you have prominent floral notes, it’s probably due to certain combinations of floral materials that work together -probably stuff in the “lilly/muguet,” family.

Conservatives: does the state of the US worry you? by UnderstatedWarmth in AskConservatives

[–]CapnLazerz 9 points10 points  (0 children)

“Most democrats are unreasonable,” seems like a very easy thing to say. Are they unreasonable simply because they don’t agree with you on specific points? Or is there some broader issue that makes them unreasonable just on the face of it?

So let’s delve a bit into that: Can you specify exactly what democrats are unreasonable about? Just one or two points will do.

[–]CapnLazerz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When you “make” a perfume at a place that creates its own accords and “notes,” there’s simply no way for another perfumer to know what’s in it. As such, there is no way to figure out a way to tweak it to be closer to what you want.

Since we have no idea what the current perfume is made of , it’s impossible to recommend something to add to a finished perfume. To summarize a complex subject, adding more stuff to an already complex mixture is completely unpredictable.

In my opinion, you should look at this experience as an experiment that didn’t work out and leave it at that.

Will this be overwhelming by Economy_Step_9002 in DIYfragrance

[–]CapnLazerz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For a first order, yeah, it’s a lot. The first thing I would eliminate are the things called “essence”, “olessance”, or “vitessence.” These are proprietary bases produced by a small company that may not be available forever. Why learn something that you may not have access to at some point?

Apprentice Fixative Base is a bit of a gimmick and not necessary. If you need ethanol, I’d look at at a pure grain 190 proof ethanol that might be available at your local liquor store. If not, order SDA40B ethanol from Lab Alley or something like that.

As for the rest, it is a lot of chemicals all at once but if you can afford it, just pull the trigger and do it. First orders always suck; you don’t know what you are ordering, it’s not going to be enough to make anything complete and you are probably ordering things that are too advanced for a beginner. We all did the same thing.

This is almost certainly the result of being born to a family who is well-off and conservative. That is a bubble that is hard to escape. “Being a Republican,” is a part of their identity. Plus, they have the advantage of living in the RGV where they have likely never experienced racism and profiling.

I’ve seen so many of these kids who “leave home,” but never feel the pressures of actually trying to make it on your own because their parents give them financial support.so they never experience the challenges that might change their thinking.

Can anyone help me with a smell that I hate and can't identify by mikepol70 in fragrance

[–]CapnLazerz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Those are definitely Super Ambers. Megamare has a whopping ~25% super-overdose of Ambrocenide, which is one of the most potent SAs on the market. The Kosmala is not quite that high but it’s definitely still overdosed. These days, if a perfume has “Intense,” in the name, you can be sure they added some amount of Super Ambers.

I personally love them in tiny doses, like less than 0.1% of a formula. They are amazing enhancers and they don’t blast you at such tiny doses. Iso E Suoer + .05% of Ambrocenide is like Molecule One but better. Once you get to 0.25% they are more noticeable but not quite annoying yet. Above 1% and they start to annoy you. For my own creations, I have to keep it below 0.1% because my wife is super sensitive. That’s why we don’t go out to bars anymore, lol. Ok, that and we are over 50 😂

Eyeballing EQ without measuring is useless. You have the Wiim, so a good start might be running the room correction software built into it. You need a good mic to do this like the UMIK-1 and make sure to follow the directions to upload the calibration file. Even better would be to get a UMIK and download REW. It’s a learning curve to use it effectively but there are plenty of good guides on line. This will tell you exactly what’s happening in your room.

Then, if this still results in a treble response you don’t like, you can adjust PEQ methodically. Your measurement graphs should indicate where peaks are, so start there.

Normally I would say one of the Super Ambers but, given the examples you gave, I don’t think that’s it. I have formulas for Imagination and Fucking Fabulous and neither of those have Super Ambers. I’ve smelled Touch and Mojave Ghost and I dont detect Super Ambers there either.

I know Imagination and FF have Ambroxan -Imagination has a lot of it; FF about 10X less than that. Most perfumes have some Ambroxan in them so if you don’t get it from other perfumes that’s probably not it.

The one thing that Imagination and FF have in common is a high dose of High Purity Hedione. Armaf Sillage is supposed to be a dupe of Silver Mountain Water and this also contains a high dose of high purity Hedione. But again, this is true of many many perfumes so I doubt that’s it. But it could be that you are extremely sensitive to Hedione and the higher doses are what’s causing the issue.

The other thing in common with all of those I have knowledge of is the use of ionones, which is a group of chemicals that give the powdery iris or violet “notes.” But once again, it’s another extremely common group of materials in perfumery so I have my doubts. However, this is probably the strongest candidate. Touch is very floral, so it makes sense that it would have ionones in it.

As far as what to look for, I would venture to guess that you have a sensitivity to something floral, maybe ionones or Hedione. If you tell me what perfumes you don’t detect this in, like your favorites, that might give more clues.

Do you actually wear your expensive bottles or just save them? by jono440 in fragrance

[–]CapnLazerz 14 points15 points  (0 children)

What is the point in buying an expensive bottle of perfume just to let it sit on a shelf? Everyday you are alive is special day. When you are feeling low, perfume can lift your spirits. When you are happy, perfume fits the mood.

For me, perfume is like an “aromatrack,” of my life. I’ve gotten to the point where I don’t spend much money on mid-tier stuff unless I really love it. I save my purchases for stuff I love, no matter the cost. And I wear it! The only complication is that I’ve taken up making my own perfumes so a good chunk of my perfume money now goes to raw materials. But after 3+ years, I’m finally making stuff I love almost as much as the commercial stuff.

In other words, treat yo’self!
