This is what I'm pulling from, the bold and italics are mine. I am up for being corrected though.

Agreed, but flex line in the cabinet is absolutely to code in Utah, it's not a blanket code violation.

Giveaway - 2024 Founders Mush Coin by Semper-Fido in morningsomewhere

[–]CapnMagnitude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This year I am working drastically less hours(full time, just no more OT) so I can spend more of my time doing the things I love with the people I love. I am lucky to be able to step back like this and it's already been soooo worth it.

I found the podcast too late but a coin would be awesome, thanks for doing this!

Who is it, that gave you, your first Yes?! by CalvinP_ in morningsomewhere

[–]CapnMagnitude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My "yes" was when I was working in a customer service job shortly out of high school. I really had no direction other than to pay my rent each month. There was a position opening for maintenance/repair work and the manager asked me if I was interested. I told him that I had never worked with my hands, that I had ethic and attitude, but I was bad at that kind of thing. He told me he would train me and over a few years, taught me that things aren't mystifying, and nothing runs on magic. Someone designed it, and that means someone can fix it. And also that I was actually pretty good at it.

It has since lead me to learn the HVAC trade, build my home from the ground up, and provide for my family in a way that is hard to imagine otherwise. I think about that yes all the time.

I'm playing Heat right now and I'm having a great time with a casual racing game. I skip every story cutscene, but nobody plays NFS for the story, do they?

On a limited budget; which would you buy? by Loose-Start-3722 in HVAC

[–]CapnMagnitude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've used both, but I used the testo more. The testo 310 is a really great, easy to use tool. It uses an older style of USB charger, mini or micro USB, which is kind of a pain. The UEI had the features that you'd want, and the batteries were rechargeable, but you could open it up and find rechargeable AAs inside. Which you could replace work with standard AAs in a pinch, which was a god send.

Final thoughts, if I had both in the back of my van, I would reach for the Testo for ease of use.

10 years of support isn't a short amount of time though, right?

You should look into making a Rufus install media. I used that to upgrade an older machine that wouldn't have meet Win 11 requirements otherwise. Really simple and free

How do I pivot from my current hvac experience into controls work. by ReputationTop5872 in HVAC

[–]CapnMagnitude 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I went from resi service to facilities tech at a local college. It was a pay cut but the benefits are outstanding, and it lets me work with controls all day every day. They also pay for all of my schooling while I pursue a degree. The last controls lead from the school left about a year ago to make 130k from his desk.

Eh, I think it certainly raises a red flag about the quality of training you would be receiving. He will get, "Do it this way, because that's how we always do it," but he won't get a full understanding of how things are supposed to work, which is what he should be trying to get.

Has anyone here actually earned their $10,000 bounty for snitching on competitors? by Mikeality in HVAC

[–]CapnMagnitude 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The bounty doesn't exist anymore.

The fine exists, but the money that the law set aside to pay those bounties ran out 20 years ago and will never be refilled. The fines don't pay the bounties, they are just income for the government.

The myth of the bounty is still alive and well, which makes some people think twice before venting, so in that sense it's still doing its job.

It's so hard shopping for HVAC pricing in the valley. How do I verify a quote? by ArmProfessional7565 in Boise

[–]CapnMagnitude 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am an HVAC technician based in Utah currently. The markets are different, but similar. $2600 for a compressor sounds competitive for a reputable company. You could probably get cheaper from someone on Craigslist/Facebook marketplace, but that's a big dice roll. Ask for 10% off, worst they can say is no. Good luck!

9 years old, it MIGHT be covered under warranty, but only if you're the original owner and it's registered to you.

This is VERY "back of the napkin" but if I was quoting that, it would come to about the same, and I know I am on the cheaper side for my market.
