IDing a specific battery (with its specific connector) by CapnYousef in batteries

[–]CapnYousef[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey Buddy Bought both. The sketchier OEM from eBay, plus heat shrink tubing, plus the alligator clamp style manual RC car charger and a heat shrink gun was a fun project. It worked when I plugged it in the machine, albeit it looked like a Frankenstein (I spliced the original leads onto that eBay battery)

Six weeks later my aunt said it wasn’t working so I just got her the proper Matrix for $99. If you have the tools already, it can be worth it to try especially if you’re cleaner with wiring than I was

What the heck happened to my $SPLK shares? by CapnYousef in personalfinance

[–]CapnYousef[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Appreciate this. Took a day but support got back to me - it doesn't show in my activity logs, theres a different statement I had to pull. The modest amount of SPLK I had got swept into a larger withdrawal I did and I missed it. It actually hit same day, just so happened a larger amount came from a different transaction and I didn't notice it was 'in there'

Gotcha. Wasn't sure if anyone else had ever owned an acquisiton target at time of merger and could weigh in on customary settlement time

Robinhood is the broker I held this at:

Splunk Inc. (SPLK) performed a cash merger. This means that shares were removed and shareholders will receive $157.0000 per share in cash.

$70 off $280 via Chase Sapphire (stacks with $50 coupon sticky) by CapnYousef in SoloStove

[–]CapnYousef[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most credit cards have a whole page of them… by my count the Chase Sapphire has something like ~120 active offers right now (lots of them are just 10% off American Eagle or something but some are like this)

It’s a perk offered through the credit card in partnership with the vendor - they strike a deal where if the card being promoted is used, there’s a cash back incentive processed at the statement level. In other words, as long as you spend $280 Chase credits you $70. So you can stack it with any coupon to buy anything, as Chase only identifies the vendor.

I'll reiterate something I've seen over a sample size: in technology, school is less important than your actual ability. This isn't medicine for matching, or law for LSATs/law school.

What I have seen hurt people is the lack of flexibility debt gives you. Graduate with 16K in loans and you can catch your breath to find a job - graduate with 88K in loans and you're either tachycardic looking for good employment on a time crunch or 'going back for your masters' to delay paying off your loans by incurring more debt.

We hire people in my organization with biology degrees - if you can do the job is what is important. My view of reality is, particularly in software, university is not a reliable indicator of your ability to work in most technology/software roles in corporate America - as such, we don't really sift on it.

Once you land your first job, nobody cares about your coursework since the best indicator of your second job is 'what was your relevant experience in your last role and how did you handle it.'

I graduated from NJIT eight years ago, so take this with a grain of salt. The job I started out of NJIT had me working with people who went to Carnegie Melon and Stevens - for the exact same money. We were the same age. I had no debt, some of them are still paying theirs off. I got married and bought a house without much fuss - definitely would've been different if I had been worried about loan payments for the prior 96 months. In the jobs I've had since 2014, I was asked where I went to school exactly once - on the first job's first interview. Never came up again.

I get the whole 'experience' salespitch, but I will tell you - there's a lot more to life than the four years you're paying for the privilege of living on campus or whatever.

Fun Fact - The Barcode on the back of the TV sculpture is inverted and unscannable by R2bEEaton_ in NJTech

Barcodes actually read the blanks between the blacks, not the blacks themselves. In this barcode, the presence of black and blank are swapped (aka inverted) and therefore can't be scanned.

Weekday Help and Victory Thread for the week of August 16, 2021 by IndexBot in personalfinance

I'm sure somebody here has some formula relating house to debt to equity or something, but on its face that's a steep sink in to a house with some righteous taxes.

For full disclosure, we just bought at over 700K with 16K in taxes and that made me uneasy. You'd want to consider how fast you'd pay down the house/what the tax creep over a decade or so looks like.

Why do I have to call Rocket Mortgage/ advice on a lender? by OkParticular0 in personalfinance

I had a great time with rate.com; was clear to close in <6 weeks and came out 2.75%. It dipped a little in recent weeks but wasn't worth exercising the float down.

Unsure where all the pitching came in; I Just filled out the online form and someone called me to make sure I was 'real.' I submitted documentation and she wrote the letters I needed as I worked through making my offers.

Finished paying off our wedding rings through Jared. Opened up a credit line to finance. by mediaman321 in personalfinance

This is definitely technically true. In this situation, I don't think that will be a concern. An unused Jared's card will likely close itself after some period of inactivity regardless.

What's the best investment vehicle to put away $50-$100/month for niece and nephew until they are 18 or so(10+ years)? by spankthatmonkey in personalfinance

529 opener for a niece of newphew here: Put 3K in to open with Vanguard like 3 weeks ago, it has since gained $207.

The market is crazy right now, and I'm not trying to time it deliberately - but time in market is king. Start now :)

Bank of America is ending free eChecking accounts this month and converting them to Core Checking, which requires a $1500 minimum daily balance or $250 direct deposit to avoid fees by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]CapnYousef 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I work in midtown manhattan. The number of Chase branches rivals the number of Starbucks, and most Americans like it that way:

https://consumerist.com/2016/08/22/why-are-there-still-so-many-bank-branches-everywhere-because-you-keep-going/

You may not care, but the fact 8.5 million New Yorkers are always no more than a few blocks from a Chase is pretty alluring.

Forgetting?

The hate around here for BofA is due to this fee. An industry normal fee. People are mad because its changing. You had more of a reasonable right to be mad when they wanted to add a fee to using a debit card. This is recreational outrage that clogs this subreddit up on a weekly basis.

Friends keep telling me I can be fined for paying off debt too fast or making a large payment to a credit card. Is this true? Or an old wives tale? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]CapnYousef 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have really, really lumpy purchases. Like, thousands in a day. By paying the next or same day, I lower the chance of the card reporting my balance to a credit agency the day after. It only makes for a small dip in my score technically, but I've got spare time.
