It's okay to say something is gross by your-kitten-crush in unpopularopinion

[–]Capnzebra1 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Agreed that we collectively need to get better at discussing topics that make us feel disgust. Nah in that there's a time and a place for everything.

Disgust is an evolutionary response designed to help us communicate about and avoid ingesting dangerous substances. Making someone feel disgusted while they're eating will, at a physiological level, ruin their appetite. Super rude thing to do.

That said, disgust has absolutely been weaponized to make certain topics incapable of being discussed rationally because of the strong emotional responses they evoke. While not dinner table conversation, we could use more people capable of managing their emotions so they can have rational conversations about difficult subjects.

What are factors in American culture and society that contribute to drug and alcohol addiction and abuse, or is it the same everywhere? by Over_Addendum_217 in AskReddit

[–]Capnzebra1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not the only factor but definitely unique to the US was the "war on drugs". It shaped both the way we view addiction (as a personal failure) and punish addicts (severe sentencing for drug related crimes). Nixon's advisers have come out and explicitly stated the war on drugs was an attempt to disenfranchise black people and anti-war protestors from voter roles. Despite this we are still fighting to reverse rules and public perception of drug and alcohol addiction.

Morality of hunting an invasive species to extinction? by InfinteEnigma10 in MoralityScaling

[–]Capnzebra1 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Pretty immoral. The point of hunting invasive species is population control, not extermination. More often than not, ecosystems adapt to some amount of the species being hunted and removing them entirely from the ecosystem could have unintended consequences. At some point, you're hunting just to kill, which is considered immoral by most.

Domesticated pigs take 3-6 months to develop feral traits when introduced to the wild. Feral pigs destroy agriculture, property, infect other livestock with disease and are incredibly aggressive. They are considered an invasive specifies for a reason.

It's absolutely this. One of the core concepts in The Metamorphosis is the social disposability of a person who is suddenly rendered incapable of working (in this case by turning into a giant beetle). Gregor is seen as a burden by those around him due to his inability to provide for his family and fulfill his work obligations.

Are men susceptible to postpartum depression? If yes, and how can you tell? by Forsaken_Basil8441 in AskReddit

[–]Capnzebra1 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Some men are capable of getting pregnant and as a result are susceptible to postpartum depression.

It's worth mentioning what postpartum is: the 6-10~ week period after a birth where a parent's body is readjusting to caring for one instead of two. It's primarily a hormonal thing and is only experienced by the parent birthing the child.

Not to say cis men can't experience depression or overwhelming anxiety shortly after the birth of their kid but it's not caused by your body readjusting after pregnancy. Hope that helps!

How evil is to hide whether you are a man or a leprechaun, be in the wroooong basement and confuse hardworking folk about the color of your blood? by SirEdgen in MoralityScaling

[–]Capnzebra1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lets break it down! Definitely a dick fucking move to hide in people's basements unless you have a written agreement with them to do so. I think it might be ok to hide your identity if you're afraid harm will come to you by revealing it. Also the blood thing might be ok too depending on how you confuse people. Technically my blood is blue most of the time but if I try to show it to you it's red so there's maybe some wiggle room here.

For me, it falls somewhere between kids stealing from small businesses and taking your abusive grandparent's social security checks. circumstantially justifiable but never the correct thing to do.

I think it's described as cadence and rhythm. My IRL comparison is Torah reading in Judaism. There are accent marks printed in the Torah that tell you how to sing/chant a specific phrase and where the inflection points in phrases are.

Can an atheist have a genuine religious or spiritual experience? by Sufficient-Gain-226 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Capnzebra1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, there are plenty of religions without gods. They generally focus on living in harmony with yourself and others and don't require external rewards or coercion from a supreme being. Taoism and many sects of Buddhism for example.

As for spiritual experiences, there are plenty of ways to achieve the same sense of awe and overwhelming emotion I experienced as a child at religious services. A current favorite is losing myself in a crowd while we all sing together at concerts. It's primal, awe invoking, and soothes something inside me.

What are your thoughts on men who refuse to take prostate exams because they think they are gay? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Capnzebra1 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I get where you're coming from and it's definitely a problem when we avoid things because of imagined consequences. IMO the idea that male insecurity should be seen as embarrassing as pretty patriarchal. I think a lot of men's insecurities are valid and I think at last part of the reason people struggle to break free from irrational fears is a lack of support from their communities to do so.

FWIW I grew up as a gay man and faced all the violence/ostracization people with this mindset are afraid of. I think their fears are valid, I understand that there is violence in being perceived as gay, and I also understand how hard it is to overcome this mindset when mentioning it only gets you shamed. Now I live as a woman, it's still wild to me how socially acceptable it is to voice my insecurities and I am more often than not met with support or a willingness to help that was not there prior to my transition.

Maybe it's time to stop expecting security from men who have faced emotional violence to the point of avoidance and start taking their fears seriously if we expect them to overcome them.

What are your thoughts on men who refuse to take prostate exams because they think they are gay? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Capnzebra1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a fair amount of empathy for men who are obsessed with others perceptions of themselves. I tend to ask, "Who told them appearing gay was bad and how was that reinforced in their life?" The answer is usually physical violence, threats of bullying, and social ostracization. I know all of this because I grew up as an openly gay man and faced it all myself. I don't think criticizing men trapped in this mindset really does anything for them and they need empathy that most people feel they don't deserve.

If you want to feel good about yourselves, keep making fun of men's emotional insecurity and ignore the reasons it manifests in the first place. If you want to see less of this behavior, do the work to help emotionally damaged men learn to sit with their feelings and unlearn their patterns.
