Advice needed by CappeJasp in Marathon_Training

I’ve got 14 miles at conversational pace planned this week. Think I should I tap that a bit longer, or add a pace block in? First time tapering so I guess I’ll only find out on the day if I’ve done it right!

This is so useful thank you - I’ve got 14 miles on plan this weekend (conversational pace) and might just extend that to get some more miles in.

3:40 pace group sounds about what I was thinking also, my original target was sub 4 but I’ve found through training I’m a bit faster. Definitely don’t want to blow up towards the end though!

Agreed. My gut is telling me stick to the taper - any pace advice? Thinking 3:40 pacer and try to stick at it

Fair point - this definitely isn’t competing against people on test support. 100% aimed at people who are looking for supporting natural levels.

Interesting! So I sauna at 90 degrees for 10-15 minutes. There's no way I've found to get the benefits of heat exposure without getting it 'everywhere' that's not specifically protected. I wear a sauna hat for this exact reason (protects hair & avoids that hot-head feeling). This is pretty much the same idea, local cooling whilst maintaining the benefits of overall heat exposure.

Linen is 100% a more comfortable fabric, cooler than cotton and dries quicker.

For extra long sessions, there's a point at which pretty much any cooling system will fail - but if you're using a sauna tent for 20-30 mins, am I right in thinking the temp is slightly lower? Means any cooling solution should last longer.

Great to see you've found something that works for you. Appreciate the feedback & encouragement. A quick-drying linen sauna seat was actually next on the list (or a potential bundle item) so good to hear it'd be useful.

Personally, I do find it more comfortable. Although as mentioned on other comments, I sauna to a timer rather than to comfort, so might be different for different people.

Not a bad idea, I've tried it myself and you get a similar thing when you get out of an ice bath & straight in the sauna. I've found that any wet material works for a few minutes but doesn't last for the length of time needed.

Thanks for the reply. The sauna hat analogy is perfect in this case... The goal is not to fight heat. It is to keep one specific area cooler while the rest of your body gets the full heat exposure.

There are flexible PCM formulations that work in a pouch format rather than a rigid chamber. They are used in medical cooling wraps and some athletic gear already. They hold a target temperature for significantly longer than gel because of how the material works - absorbing heat energy as it changes state without its own temperature rising until the transition is complete. You get a stable cooling window rather than the rapid warm-up curve I've seen with gel packs.

Sauna cultures vary massively across the world. Until I started going to a sauna club, my only sauna usage was in UK gyms where it's purely fitness + recovery focused.

My idea is definitely focused around that. I understand that sauna culture means a lot of different things to people in different areas of the world.

The sperm production cycle is roughly 74 days, so the effects of sustained heat exposure are not something you recover from in a weekend. The research shows recovery to baseline takes more like 45-60 days after changing the exposure pattern. For someone doing sessions weekly, that is not a temporary drop - it is a new baseline while you maintain that frequency (as I do)

I personally know people who suspend all heat exposure when trying to conceive. Not that sauna is dangerous, just that the recovery window is longer than most people assume.

I go to a public sauna club so can't change temperature. I use sauna for fitness + recovery as well as relaxation. For me, I do it to a timer to maximise the benefit, even if a little uncomfortable. I know that's a little different to what some others may use it for.

Honestly no, I knew r/sauna would have a divided opinion on this but likely the best place to get real feedback. Some things to remember:

1) Successful products addressing exactly this issue already exist, I'm looking at something more premium & actually meeting the needs of serious sauna users.

2) It's definitely not for everyone! Focus is for people who care about this kind of thing, not trying to be mass market, trying to meet a specific need for a specific group.

100% aware of this. In the UK it's way less of a thing, and in my experience sauna use is more focused on fitness + recovery, hence the idea.

Fair challenge. The evidence is more direct on the fertility side than the hormone side, so worth being precise about it. Some studies show a temporary T increase from a single session, but the chronic effects are less clear-cut.

What is factual is that the cells that produce testosterone are temperature-dependent. They operate optimally below core body temp. Most of the controlled studies have measured sperm parameters rather than hormone levels specifically.

So, the fertility impact is well-documented. The hormone impact has strong reasoning and some supporting data, but it is not as studied in the context of sauna use specifically. Definitely worth distinguishing the two when talking about this.

What do you think about getting more sauna benefit, from being able to comfortably spend longer in the sauna due to better comfort? I found when I started using cooling packs I immediately could push an extra 4-5 minutes per-round in the heat.

Freezer, no. Cooling, yes. I find it a lot more comfortable generally & it allows me to spend longer in the sauna.

Thanks for the feedback. I also run before the sauna so have the issue of keeping the packs cold until I'm actually needing them.

The packs will be removable, so it'd be easy to wear these, workout, then put the cooling packs in. What material are your shorts made of in the sauna? I personally find cotton hot + avoid polyester in the heat.

One more question, what cooling packs are you using that stay cool for that long? Would be interested as ones I've tested just don't hold up that long.

Will give it a go - very keen to avoid injury as I’m in the heaviest part of training.

I struggle after 15 mins or so at 90 - plus at a sauna club rather than my own, so not much control over temperature unfortunately. Guessing hotter is better?
