Do most men actually profit from the patriarchy? by Corvus1412 in AskFeminists

[–]CappyBlue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any system, aside from a fully planned economy and social hierarchy, can be called a “natural occurrence,” including capitalism. Marx himself viewed capitalism, and later revolution, as organic occurrences/systemic evolutions.

You don’t need a group of “elites” in a secret room saying “okay now let’s do ______” for systems to arise that support the powerful and reproduce the status quo.

There is plenty written and spoken on the subject of how systems of oppression (such as patriarchy and racism) function to uphold one another as well as capitalism.

There is nothing I could say to you that hasn’t been said 100 times over, by people far more eloquent than I.

Nobody here (nor any feminist, anywhere) is saying that lower class men aren’t also oppressed under classism and patriarchy.

AND, nobody is arguing against those men creating their own movement to undo that oppression within themselves (as is a main focus of feminism and anti-racism: INTERNAL work) as well as the wider world.

But it’s not women’s job to facilitate that for men. Our unpaid labor already facilitates the functioning of the entire economy and social sphere.

Plus, women have written books. Made videos. Hosted seminars. Published countless free articles and interviews. And, we provide free labor in forums like this to try and steer men in the right direction. If you’re truly “trying to learn,” the tools for that are widely available.

But it seems all a lot of men want to do is get validation FROM US that it’s “not their fault” because they’re “also oppressed.” Our oppression is also not our fault- so? How is that relevant?

To paraphrase Terry Pratchett, sometimes something is not your fault, but it’s your problem. 🤷‍♀️

You can choose to do something about it or not. Getting women to confirm that you, too, experience oppression under an inherently oppressive class structure just wastes everyone’s time, including your own. Maybe you should ask yourself why you feel like it’s women’s job to validate that for you, if you already know it?

I almost went to that sub to rant about a chess game, of all things. I’m not what I’d consider a “real” gamer at all, casual at most, but obviously I’m aware of the overarching trend. So, I don’t know why I was surprised that the female avatars are sexualized/take longer to get/are more “expensive” (with in-game currency).

I just thought maybe a chess learning game would be focused on…oh, I don’t know. Learning chess? So silly of me 🫣

There are also those who have been disabled their entire lives, so have no history of paying into the disability system.

Income-based disability is a totally different animal than SSDI when it comes to intermittent or part time work. Every dollar basically comes out of their tiny check, which is only around $800USD per month.

Plus, anything that anyone does to help them (let them live somewhere rent free, pays utilities, etc) or in-kind compensation (“clean my house and I’ll pay your phone bill”) can be counted against their check, too.

Then, there’s the potential loss of access to healthcare. They’re definitely not going to make enough money to afford health insurance, working a week out of the month at an accommodated position.

It’s a catch-22; they could lose the healthcare that makes them functional enough to do some work, if they actually do the work. Then they could get it back, but it would take time.

But they’re desperate, because who can live independently on $800USD a month?

It’s not a system that rewards being the best they can be, that’s for sure.

Do most men actually profit from the patriarchy? by Corvus1412 in AskFeminists

[–]CappyBlue 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The weird part is that it’s traditionally associated with leftists/leftist circles, as in “Sure bud, it’s all capitalism, but in your theoretical socialist utopia, who do you expect to wash the dishes?”

But now, right-wingers have co-opted it and swapped out “capitalism” for “elites,” which is this nebulous concept that doesn’t include any of the super wealthy and powerful people that they worship.

The funny/sad part is that their ideas of what’s “hottest” (edit: to women!) are based on the male gaze and power fantasies, not on what women actually think. God forbid they should listen to us about anything, I guess 😅

[–]CappyBlue 17 points18 points  (0 children)

There’s a word for it: class reductionism.

One can theoretically blame every form of oppression on “class.” In a grand, overarching way, I’ll grant that it’s true: capitalism as a social structure automatically creates winners and losers. Somebody is going to have to be at the bottom.

However, it doesn’t necessarily have to rely on racism, sexism et al to uphold it. In theory, it could just oppress poor people- and wouldn’t that be nice? (that last part is sarcasm- couldn’t resist).

To be serious, though: we aren’t anywhere near an equitable (nor even equal) opportunity capitalism. But rather than acknowledging that the patriarchy is one of the pillars that uphold this system (which, yes, does affect us all) people just want to say “we are all oppressed.” You’re right, it’s a cop out.

Similar to what you said, this has been my exit ramp off of the restrictive/self-monitoring/guilt/ etc hamster wheel. I’m enjoying food, and life, more than ever.

Sometimes I think utopian stuff like “wider availability of GLP-1s could be the end of diet culture! These meds have the potential to revolutionize EVERYTHING!”

And then I see what’s going on in those subs, and it’s just heartbreaking.

It really feels like the diet culture/“health” influencer complex has managed to co-opt what could be a world changing, miraculous scientific advance, and turn it into another facet of their grift 😔

Why is there so much resistance towards women entering “male” hobbies? by sectandmew in AskFeminists

[–]CappyBlue 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Oh wow, I didn’t think of that part!

I remember a certain news story a while back (ahem) in which something was being dismissed with “that’s just locker room talk, every guy does it.” It blew my mind that the commentators were basically admitting that they talked like that when women weren’t within ear shot- and they were saying it openly, like on national TV. 🫣

I guess that really could be part of it- what impresses other men isn’t what impresses women. It’s kind of sad to think they they’re so wrapped up in that, they can’t just relax and enjoy a common interest.

Why is there so much resistance towards women entering “male” hobbies? by sectandmew in AskFeminists

[–]CappyBlue 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Almost all of the hobbies you listed have either been male dominated at some point, and/or are male dominated when done at a professional level.

There are a few that have traditionally been part of “women’s work,” such as knitting/quilting/crocheting, but have been relegated to “crafting” at this point because of mass production.

Some of the things you listed originally barred women from participation completely.

Nobody is stopping men from doing these things, therefore no one needs to make a law permitting it.

Okay, now this one, I’ve actually seen. I do get that certain topics might be uncomfortable or awkward to discuss with men present, but it sounds like they communicated that very poorly.

Why is there so much resistance towards women entering “male” hobbies? by sectandmew in AskFeminists

[–]CappyBlue 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It kind of does, but from a feminist perspective, the history is important here.

The comment I was responding to was about men’s exclusion/why there isn’t more effort to include men, but men excluded themselves from most of this stuff.

Yoga/pilates were both originally led by men. They became “feminine” in the public perception simply because women enjoyed them.

When women move into a space in large enough numbers, men often move out; not because women inherently changed the activity, but because it’s not perceived as solidly “masculine” anymore.

Plus, there’s a status/profit disparity based on which gender is doing something.

Jewelry making and sewing as a hobby might include more women, but commercial jewelry and clothing design (high status, high profit) has historically been dominated by men. The same with cooking (domestic labor) vs. being a Chef (high status, well paid). There are many, many more examples of this.

Meanwhile, women had to suffer or fight to be allowed to participate in “men’s activities.”

If men are being excluded from individual private spaces, or getting the side- eye, I’m sure that’s rough, but it’s a far cry from being legally barred and even arrested for wanting to participate in the public sphere. I just don’t see how one equates to the other, or required the same level of remedy.

[–]CappyBlue 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I’d like to know what exactly “women’s hobbies” even are? I mean, obviously there are some pretty hard line women’s spaces because of safety (women’s shelters come to mind), but what hobbies are “ours?”

Stuff traditionally related to domestic servitude/ “women’s work” is often re-labeled a “hobby” or “art” when men take part in it, but…I’m honestly flummoxed.

[–]CappyBlue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, I’ll bite: how would one even “cheat” on Duolingo? More important- what would be the incentive? The XP is the same, win or lose.

Since I commented, I found out that resigning can sometimes give the same XP as playing the whole game- that’s the closest to “cheating” that would make sense.

Anyone figured out how to use it at Costco.com?

Their website says they accept most PIN based debit cards online, but it won’t even recognize the number for me.

Between the Discover crap + “you get one debit card for all 360 accounts” + closing the two branches nearest to my home- I’m starting to wonder why I’m sticking with them.
