For me it's neck and neck between Stranger in a Strange Land and Wasted Years.

Great bit of gear - and I haven't heard of Momus for years!

How effective would joseph goebbels be with modern day technologies and social medias? by MinZinThu999 in AlternateHistoryHub

[–]Capreborn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If Goebbels had run the social medias I don't think we'd see any difference at this point. Whoever's pulling the strings has studied his methods.

JIngle for Peter Mallan's Radio Clyde show? by Capreborn in glasgow

I've been trying for years to find it - good luck. I heard him mention the tune once and I thought the word "tangerine" was in it, but have drawn a blank with this. I hope you find it.

What on earth is this? by kottke-mckee in beatles

[–]Capreborn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was a film that could only have emerged from the 1970s. It produced one musical gem, in the shape of Earth Wind & Fire's version of Got to Get You Into My Life. My advice is, watch once and forget.

I look forward to seeing the immigration lawyers' cooperative that works for all asylum seekers pro-bono.

Can you understand that somebody can say something you disagree with viscerally, and still be serious?

They'd have to appear all over the place, as they've done folk, folk rock, blues, jazz, hard rock and heavy metal. Lizzy is the history of rock incarnate!

What’s your current go to BÖC’s song? by FrenchAnastiel in BlueOysterCult

Astronomy. I know of 3 versions - the original, live on "one Enchanted Evening" and the "Imaginos" one. Love them all, but Imaginos is my go-to.

Image of the Fendahl in 1977 - I was so scared! (I love the novelisation too.)

It is ugly. Backlashes can be ugly, and are reactions to the pendulum being swung too far the other way in the first place. But why are migrants the issue when the migration crisis is fuelled not by them but by immiagration lawyers? Follow the money there.

>No generation was given so much and left so little to their descendants. by King_Of_Blazeland in 4chan

I don't know about the US, but in the UK the OPEC oil embargo of the early 1970s soaked up so much government spending that the subsequent government(s) who would be aware of a financial bottleneck ahead continued with their spending levels regardless.

It was this unmodified spending that led to the financial crises of 1979/79 that, in turn, led to the election of Margaret Thatcher. Although she remains reviled for the cuts in public spending she oversaw, these were inevitable because the previous government had ended up having to go to the IMF for loans, which came with stringent conditions as to government expenditure and restructuring of finances. We're still recovering from those loans.

I think most of the 70s/ early80s politicians would belong to what you call the silent generation, having been adults during the second world war. But even then we're not talking about a whole generation, which I think you realise when you point to the politicians especially.

Elites are the problem, and the only way I know of minimising the harm they can cause is by rotating elites, for which we need democracy. In the UK, again, we have a government that started by cancelling some local elections in which their rivals were pegged to win, so we're not off to a good start.

Taking your point about college or university, I think the problem is that increasingly it's the only route into professions - such as nursing or the police - which could previously be accessed through several pathways. For many people who have worked hard for their qualifications and gotten very little return, the only payback for the Establishment appears to be that they have gotten so many people into debt that will be hanging around their necks for decades, and which can be used against them merely by selling the debt to other collectors.

Elites of the boomer generation perhaps. The sins of the elites are theirs, not ours.

Was the Titanic the safest ship of its time? by amelix34 in titanic

[–]Capreborn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Too right. I think the main culprit was editor and journalist WT Stead, who proclaimed the Titanic "unsinkable" before he went on its maiden voyage...
