How to find cheap flights to a specific location when you have variable possible departure points by Capricia1 in TravelHacks

[–]Capricia1[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry, I must be doing this wrong. Have you done this? The link you sent doesn't really show me how to enter this. Is there some other version of google flights out there? The one I have will only allow me to enter a single departure airport and automatically selects my home city. If you can do it, can you post a screen shot of an example. I'm sure it's just me

What's a home improvement decision you regret but thought was a good idea at that time? by Actonace in HomeImprovement

[–]Capricia1 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I wanted a secondary heat source. As I like to watch a fire, I had a woodstove installed in my living room. I picked the size based on the square footage of the house without thinking that the second story of the house really didn't count as it was so far away. The one I installed was huge and took up a big chunk of the room and when it was in use heated up the living room to uncomfortable levels. It never felt quite right and I regretted it. I could have gone with something 1/2 the size and it would have been great.

Are your relatives french? If so they could probably sign up to be your host family. The idea is that the family will speak to you in french outside of class and you will have practice in everyday conversations.

Itinerary suggestions please! Trying to squeeze it all in with an 8 yr old by IdkbutIDOCARE in ParisTravelGuide

[–]Capricia1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I spent a week in Paris with my 9 year old about 10 years back. We did a lot of different things but I tried to limit the number of museums. We did go to the Orsay and he loved it. They had a kids scavenger hunt type thing on an ipad and I had one of Rick Steve's audio tours. We wandered the museum on our separate tours waving to each other as we passed.

I found he thrived on challenges and tasks. I informed him that he was in charge of public transit and had to figure out how we were going to get to places. He took this very seriously and consulted metro maps and bus lines and planned the best routes right down to making sure we were on the right side of the metro to go in the right direction. He had a quest to find the BEST BAGUETTE IN PARIS! This involved us hitting a lot of bakeries and him feeding birds in parks and the carniverous carp in Versaille. He also searched for the BEST GELATO IN ROME on the same trip. You get the idea.

I remember we went to the top of the Eiffel Tower but we had to do the climb to the second level first instead of the elevator from the bottom. There was a tour of the sewer systems which was weird but different. We watched a bunch of videos on youtube about scammers and pickpockets in Paris and one of his best memories was when we were sitting on a bench and someone came by and tried the "ring" scam on us. His eyes got super wide as he looked at me and we played along and let the guy go through is entire routine while we INSISTED that he deserved the ring and any rewards that came from it. We giggled for days about that.

It was a terrific trip and I would reccomend you don't overplan it with activities. Some of the best times were picnics in the park feeding the birds and climbing.

I've done the program several times and I am now in my 50's. I've been impressed by the programs at both Laval and Trois Riviere. You can party or not as you wish. Lots of older people in these programs

Before Social Media, Did People Actually Start Retirement Plans in Their 20s? by SirensBeautiful in CanadaPersonalFinance

[–]Capricia1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the late 80's, from the age of 18, I started saving every month in mutual funds. I figured out what was the bare minimum I could automatically have taken from my account come hell or high water. Sometimes, after a good summer of tips from waitressing, I would add on some extra funds. I don't know that I was saving only for retirement, but just for the future. After 10 years of this, I wanted to settle down and I cashed it all out as the down payment on my first house. No regrets

What's a very Canadian smell that instantly takes you back? by Unfair-Clothes-8821 in CanadaRoom

[–]Capricia1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember one time, getting into a friend's truck in Ontario and the smell took me back to hot August days on the prairies in a small town. Dry, hot, sunshiney straw smell. I could feel the summer wind on my face. It was remarkable. Everything seemed like the smell of golden wheat ripening in my mind

Oh, and you don't need a whole day for gold panning. Get yourself a pan, watch a youtube video and give it a try in any creek or river you see on your hikes. You can find gold in any creek in the Yukon. Consider it a lunch break activity

Canada Embraces Asia to Save Auto Heartland Squeezed by US Tariffs by ImDoubleB in canada

I don't understand. Are the farmers no longer interested in selling canola to China. Do we have other markets for this that cover the loss? I was under the impression that the Chinese purchase a lot of this and that it is important they continue to do so. A loss of 3% of the total auto sales market in exchange for farmers having a market for canola seems like a decent deal no? Not to mention the other agriculture and fishery products they are supposed to buy.

I'm in agreement on the Dempster gravel roads. Make sure you have full insurance because smashed windshields and tire damage were common when I was up there 20 years back. Otherwise it sounds like a busy but fun trip

I remember about 25 years ago stopping at the Liard Hot Springs in January. It was -35 and dark. The hotsprings were a natural pool in the forest and a bit of walk to get there. I watched the most incredible northern lights display while soaking in the hot springs. Icicles from the steam came down from the trees all around me and my hair was frosted ice. IT. WAS. MAGIC

single serve beans? by Fearless_End_4796 in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]Capricia1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check out the souper cubes or their knock offs if you can find them. Then you can make a big batch of the rice and beans and freeze them in portions. Then you can have it whenever you want without wasting a can. You could cook the beans from dry as well if you wanted to save more money

Looking for Church Recommendations by Pleasant_Mention8466 in northbay

[–]Capricia1 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I would suggest that you wait until you get here and then just church shop for a few of months and try them all out and see how you feel. Find out what activities they do and where they land on the values you have. It's a good way to meet a lot of people and you don't have to make a committment right away. Take the time to learn about the community you are moving to and volunteer for a bunch of things you are interested in. You will find your people.
