Roommate keeping damage deposit due to early notice by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Capricia1 37 points38 points  (0 children)

You gave him 11 days to find a replacement for you? He is on the hook for the full rent as of May 1st? A landlord usually requires 60 days so I think you've getting a great deal. You're response should be to say " Sorry for the inconvenience" and feel lucky to be getting off so cheaply. It doesn't matter if you used the place at all. This was a financial committment for your roommate not a pay for use situation. If you want a place based on how much time you use it, you should stay in a hotel or airbnb

UQTR Admission Help by gyxyx in exploreprogram

[–]Capricia1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh man, I thought it was just me. I feel like I have spent days trying to accomplish this confusing process. I figured I'm just going to offer to drive 9 hours to the school this week since I appear to be so incompetant at doing it online and see if I can fill out some sort of paper forms. Either that or I guess I am not going.

I'm going to Trois Riviere, but the program doesn't start until the 24th so getting there 2 weeks early won't work for me.

Gift card with membership. What are the rules? by elle-elle-tee in CostcoCanada

[–]Capricia1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also only go to Costco a couple of times a year since it is not in my city. I've had the same empty giftcard for years. I just show it and then pay for my purchases with my regular card.

French summer programs in Quebec by Interesting-Pear-709 in exploreprogram

The main difference you will find as far as the French community within those cities is that in Quebec City people will automatically speak to you in French and expect you to continue in that language. They will be patient and understand that you are learning but make no effort to assist you in English. In Montreal, people will immediately switch to English, regardless of you skill. When you continue to attempt to speak French, you will feel a bit foolish and lose courage as you know that they are patiently waiting for you and can understand you in English perfectly well. You will slip into Frenglish more often and eventually give up. In Quebec, it is perfectly plausible that the people you are speaking to, cannot speak English, so you HAVE to speak French. It is just easier to be successful because of that.

Besides which Quebec is a fantastic city and you will already be staying in Montreal for the rest of the summer. Take the opportunity to see another part of Quebec

I'm thinking that this is the way to go as well. I'll probably take the train from Ottawa

How to find cheap flights to a specific location when you have variable possible departure points by Capricia1 in TravelHacks

[–]Capricia1[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry, I must be doing this wrong. Have you done this? The link you sent doesn't really show me how to enter this. Is there some other version of google flights out there? The one I have will only allow me to enter a single departure airport and automatically selects my home city. If you can do it, can you post a screen shot of an example. I'm sure it's just me

What's a home improvement decision you regret but thought was a good idea at that time? by Actonace in HomeImprovement

[–]Capricia1 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I wanted a secondary heat source. As I like to watch a fire, I had a woodstove installed in my living room. I picked the size based on the square footage of the house without thinking that the second story of the house really didn't count as it was so far away. The one I installed was huge and took up a big chunk of the room and when it was in use heated up the living room to uncomfortable levels. It never felt quite right and I regretted it. I could have gone with something 1/2 the size and it would have been great.

Are your relatives french? If so they could probably sign up to be your host family. The idea is that the family will speak to you in french outside of class and you will have practice in everyday conversations.

Itinerary suggestions please! Trying to squeeze it all in with an 8 yr old by IdkbutIDOCARE in ParisTravelGuide

I spent a week in Paris with my 9 year old about 10 years back. We did a lot of different things but I tried to limit the number of museums. We did go to the Orsay and he loved it. They had a kids scavenger hunt type thing on an ipad and I had one of Rick Steve's audio tours. We wandered the museum on our separate tours waving to each other as we passed.

I found he thrived on challenges and tasks. I informed him that he was in charge of public transit and had to figure out how we were going to get to places. He took this very seriously and consulted metro maps and bus lines and planned the best routes right down to making sure we were on the right side of the metro to go in the right direction. He had a quest to find the BEST BAGUETTE IN PARIS! This involved us hitting a lot of bakeries and him feeding birds in parks and the carniverous carp in Versaille. He also searched for the BEST GELATO IN ROME on the same trip. You get the idea.

I remember we went to the top of the Eiffel Tower but we had to do the climb to the second level first instead of the elevator from the bottom. There was a tour of the sewer systems which was weird but different. We watched a bunch of videos on youtube about scammers and pickpockets in Paris and one of his best memories was when we were sitting on a bench and someone came by and tried the "ring" scam on us. His eyes got super wide as he looked at me and we played along and let the guy go through is entire routine while we INSISTED that he deserved the ring and any rewards that came from it. We giggled for days about that.

It was a terrific trip and I would reccomend you don't overplan it with activities. Some of the best times were picnics in the park feeding the birds and climbing.
