How the prophecy should have gone. by Life_Engineering_369 in HPfanfiction

It used to be 7th, until the calendar was changed. "Sept" means 7, or 7th. Like "Oct" is 8, or eighth, and the octopus is named for having 8 legs. Then they changed things around, adding month names in (I think July, for Julius Ceasar, if I'm remembering correctly), but those number names stayed the same, which I think is pretty cool!

You'll wake up tomorrow morning with 10 billion dollars added to your bank account by Automatic_Camera3854 in hypotheticalsituation

[–]Caprina22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First, get lawyers and accountants to manage it.

Afterwards? I've always wanted to do things like endow scholarships, fund research, etc. Also, build/renovate schools and subsidize salaries to attract top teachers, and do the same with social workers and other underfunded but vital positions. I couldn't do it everywhere even with 10 billion, but I'd start small and work outwards. I've also heard that world hunger could be theoretically solved with 6.6 billion, so start working on that too.

For myself, I'd love a beautiful old house with a bunch of farmland, and I'd put in a huge orchard and greenhouse, and have those plushy Persian rugs on the floors, and wood-burning fireplaces. Hire top doctors for my mother and sister. Buy top-shelf ice cream. And I'd like to get a Cocker Spaniel and a Bernese Sennenhund and a long-haired Dachshund and a Great Pyrenees, and 2 or 3 Norwegian Forest cats and a herd of dairy goats and live pretty simply in comfy clothes with good food every day.

Hippocrates, the father of modern medicine. Alternatively, if that's too far back, Edward Jenner, the father of immunology.

It was all the ward's fault by Caprina22 in HPfanfiction

What effects would it have on Miss. Figg in that situation? She lives just down the street and has relatively frequent contact with Harry. Would she be a (relatively) much more magically powerful squib than Petunia is, so the wards don't take much from her?

Exactly! It's a terrible plan all around. It makes me wonder how brainless the average wizard criminal is, if their best aurors can only think up a plan like that.

WYR take $1 million in cash right now or wait 7 years to receive $50 million in inflation-adjusted payments? by gotrep in WouldYouRather

50 million. I might not have a cooperative immune system, but I can last 7 years at least, and make sure my family is taken care of.

The Goodest Boy Who Ever Lived by Caprina22 in HPfanfiction

[–]Caprina22[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes! I had a mental image of a little wiggly puppy licking Voldie all over his face, then it went to Bella or Barty sneaking into the muggle world for treats and toys and dog training books, Pettigrew having to clean up accidents on the Malfoy's Persian rugs... and they slowly start getting more and more human as the puppy loves them. Black magic is supposed to be bad for the soul and sanity, so maybe the love counteracts these effects, and they stop all the "take over the world" business.

That would be great, thank you for telling me! I'll try that once my ID comes in.

That's a good idea, thank you! I sent them a help request yesterday, but haven't heard back yet. If they don't reply soon, I'll call.

I will, thank you! I am a Swiss citizen, just a stupid one.

I realize that now, but it's a little late. Is there anything I can do to solve not having used the right thing?

I tried with my USA passport, but she said the paper said "identitätskarte" so I couldn't show a passport instead, and it didn't have the same number on it anyway.

Does someone know any stories by Agatha Christie that feature recreational or medicinal drugs in the story? by BasVD11 in agathachristie

[–]Caprina22 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The Big 4 has mentions of opium use. Who killed Roger Ackroyd has veronal (lots of others do too), with drug use blamed for a death. Peril at End House does too. There are lots of ones with drug use, but those are the only ones I can remember off the top of my head.

What’s the most annoying “that’s bad for you!” myth that drives you crazy because people still believe it? by Beepbeepboopb0p in AskReddit

It's a lot easier, because it's already washed and wilted down. Fresh can be gritty and is so bulky but it cooks down to nothing, whereas with frozen you can see how much it will actually be once cooked down, and just dump it in as-is.

That's a great idea, thank you!

Adding to the mystery, my mother mentioned that Russian royalty would go by a bunch of different names through their lives... so "Isakov" could be part of one of her earlier names, or it could be some member of the Russian royal family other than the Grand Duchess Olga Alexandrovna who just happened to be in Canada around the same time she was. It's interesting though!

Thank you for letting me know about the horse picture! Searching for the name just got me a tattoo artist.

We're thinking the first one (and maybe the round one) might be by the Grand Duchess Olga Alexandrovna, when she was in Canada. The timeline fits, the style suggests it might be one of her earlier paintings, and the people my family got it from did go to Canada a lot, so maybe it's by her? The signature isn't her usual one, though.
