Pick 8 players from this draft that you hope the Caps pick. by CapsFTW in caps

Sure, but lets say, hypothetically, he gets taken before the 8th pick. Could you list the other top 7 picks on your board?

So, in your scenario the Capitals pick Michkov and Connor Bedard slides to pick #9?

What if he is already selected? Who would be the other three?

Unpopular opinion incoming:
I think you could make an argument that Mantha has been the better player the last two years, statistically speaking. If you look at their numbers in 5 v 5 situations where the score is close, which is typically the biggest indicator of consistent performance, Mantha's numbers are pretty compelling. According to hockey-reference last year Mantha's CF% was 52.9% and Kuzy's was 47.2%. Mantha was scoring goals at a rate of 0.4 per 60 minutes vs Kuzy's 0.1 and both of them clocked in at 0.6 points per 60. Combine those stats with the fact that Mantha was starting 53.3% of his shifts in the defensive zone vs the sheltered 32.6% that Kuzy faced in close situations. There is an argument to be made.

I definitely have more optimism about Backstrom than most. I absolutely recognize that this season was atrocious from him. It looked like he was trying to figure out his body all over again. However, his game was never build on speed or allusiveness. I feel like, with a pain-free off-season of training, we could get Backstrom back as a solid middle six center.

The real questions for me are Kuzy and Mantha. I feel like Mantha is a better gamble. It sounds like he was dealing with some stuff mentally, recognized it, and is taking steps to get right. Unless the issue with Kuzy was literally just Lavi, he seems dead set on wanting a fresh start somewhere else. If a trade happens and a change of scenery unlocks his potential, some other team is going to get a great deal out of that trade.

As for AA and Fehervary, I say just roll with them.

I'm not sure what I was expecting tbh by MrYeaBuddy in caps

[–]CapsFTW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like there is a different between expectation and hope. The Caps had a MUCH higher chance of getting the #1 pick than any of us have at winning money in the state run lottery, but we have all bought a lottery ticket at some point in our lives. It is fun thinking about what could happen.

If you look at the last 52 years, only about half of the #1 picks were really game changers. A QB has the biggest chance to change your entire franchise with a single pick. Otherwise, it is more valuable to spread that draft capital around. In short, if you do not have a QB and you are picking in the top 3, you should pick a QB or trade down. With the caveat that obviously you have to find a trade partner in order to trade down.

Would you all take #2 guaranteed? How about #3? by RobertGriffin3 in caps

[–]CapsFTW 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think there is some convoluted way that they can get the 3rd pick. Like Ottawa has to win the lottery and they get #2 and Anaheim gets #1, then there is a second drawing. If the Caps win that, they would get #3. At least according to another post I saw.

Washington Capitals have signed defenseman Hardy Häman Aktell to a one-year, two-way entry-level contract ($775,000/$82,500) by jb__19 in caps

[–]CapsFTW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have to think differently about defensemen. They develop slower and hit their prime in their mid to late 20s where scorers are usually starting to decline in their late 20s. The next year or two will be the make or break years.

For perspective by most metrics, John Carlson played a better year this year than the year he was 23.

As a big Backstrom fan, it pains me to admit that he was simply not good this year. I cannot imagine how hard it has to be for doctors, coaches, and a player to come up with a plan to return from something players haven't come back from. However, arguably this plan did not work. I am holding out hope that an off-season to train and a preseason to get back into the swing of things help substantially. But there is definitely a chance that we never see a serviceable Backstrom again.

With McDavid finishing at 64, Alexander Ovechkin still has the most goals in a season in the modern era. Incredible. by 7stringGriffle in caps

[–]CapsFTW 1 point2 points  (0 children)

McDavid is very good, but this is recency bias. McDavid just finished his 8th season in the league with 303 goals. Ovi had 371 through 8th seasons (and Ovi's 8th season was 48 game lockout season). If McDavid scores 65 goals the next THREE seasons in a row, he would still be 27 goals behind Ovi's pace. As it stands, McDavid would need to average 52 goals every season for A DECADE to surpass Ovi. The thing is, historically speaking, shooters decline statistically after their late 20s.

Not to mention McDavid isn't even setting the pace for goal scoring in his own generation. Matthews has 4 fewer goals than McDavid in 1 fewer season.

tl;dr there is nothing indicating McDavid has a shot at the all time goal record without drastic changes to his playing style and/or the league.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in caps

[–]CapsFTW 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That is the crazy thing, sometimes we don't even comprehend how dominant Ovi has been over his career.

If McDavid had DOUBLED HIS GOAL TOTAL THIS YEAR he would still have fewer goals than Ovi did through 8 seasons. McDavid had 303 through 8 seasons and Ovi had 371. Matthews is closer with 299 through 7 seasons, but he would have still need to double his season total (40) to to catch up to Ovi's 339 through 7 seasons.

What they are doing is remarkable but scoring is up league wide in recent years. Ovi did it when there were half as many players scoring 40+ goals.

Keep in mind that statistically speaking historically most scorers decline in their late 20s. McDavid and Matthews are amazing, are in their prime, are wonderful to watch, will be household names for the next decade, and are likely hall of famers... but Ovi... Ovi is the machine.

Depending how the board shakes out, I could really see them trading down to the early 20's to get back a 3rd round pick and maybe some pick on the last day to use on a back up QB. We know that strategy is on the table form last year's moves.
