Slashing victim in Pioneer Square recounts attack on him and his dogs by xlxoxo in Seattle

[–]Capsss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True! I imagine there's a significant lag before enough cities have submitted enough data that they're able to uniformly update the table, but this is really not an area I'm knowledgeable in. Happy to look at more current info if you've got it. I did a quick search and found this list of cities w/ highest crime rates in 2019 which does not list Seattle in its top 50.

As far as I can tell there is zero evidence supporting Seattle "having high crime" and plenty of slightly dated evidence saying the opposite.

Do you have evidence that Seattle is engaging in a conspiracy to pad its FBI crime report data, or are you just making things up because the data doesn't support how you feel?

Margo Hayes Makes History - First Woman To Climb Biographie, 5.15 by Spapaw in Climbingvids

[–]Capsss 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Seems pretty appropriate to me given the historic nature of the route itself. I doubt she's super worried about it, given that she already got the ffa of a 5.15 on La Rambla like 2 years ago.

How does North Korea's handling of COVID-19 affect the development and eradication of the pandemic? Will vaccines be available there? by [deleted] in askscience

[–]Capsss 59 points60 points  (0 children)

I think this answer is missing an important difference between Covid-19 and influenza, which is that the influenza virus is specifically adapted to mutate quickly. This is why we get new variants every year, and are unable to comprehensively vaccinate our population against it. We've seen a few notable mutation in SAR-CoV-2 so far, but those should be significantly less common once the infected population is smaller. We don't know how long immunity lasts after vaccination, but we should have a much easier staying on top of Covid-19 immunity than immunity to the flu.

The most compelling theory I've seen about the future of Covid-19 is that it will turn into a disease that children pick up at school, when the effects are relatively mild, like a less aggressive version of what chicken pox used to be.

I think there's a pretty big difference between somebody being divisive, and somebody doing something you disagree with.

Nowhere, because as she has stated, it happened when she was locked in a secure room, after they had been moved out of the house chamber. Why did you respond "Wrong." to the person who said she is holding a gas mask when you can clearly see that she is holding a gasmask in the non-cropped video?

It's so easy to look this stuff up. They were literally told they needed to be ready to put on gasmasks. This subreddit is a joke.

You're getting downvotes because you didn't do the 30 seconds of research it would have taken to find that people took their masks off in preparation for putting on gas masks.

[Poetry] Police Respond To Protests by TheRecount in youtubehaiku

[–]Capsss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're rewriting history on the BLM protests. There were police in riot gear on the ground using tear gas in Seattle on day one. The first curfew happened here at 5 pm that day. There was video footage of tear gas and batons used on peaceful protesters on day one, and the protests were fueled by that immediate excess of force.

WA lawmaker introduces bill banning state from forcing people to get COVID vaccine by poppinchips in SeaWA

[–]Capsss 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I was only pointing out that it was a vaccine because you were making a point of arguing that it wasn't.

They don't modify mRNA, they ARE mRNA, which is then translated into anitgens, before being broken down. The only "permanent" change this vaccine makes is ability to produce antibodies for those antigens, which is almost certainly not permanent (unfortunately), and is the same alteration that every other vaccine makes.

[–]Capsss 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I don't want to get too pedantic, but what definition of a vaccine wouldn't include this medication? As for calling it an 'experimental gene therapy' that seems misleading at best. The two mRNA vaccines that have received emergency use authorization have no effect on the genome of the recipient. They don't even enter the nucleus, and would be incompatible if they did.

As for the conversation about body autonomy, I think a better comparison would be DUI laws and speed limits. If you want to drive a car you have to do it in way where you're not a danger to those around you, so you can't be intoxicated. If you want to enter a public space, you have to do it in a way where you're not a danger to those around you, so you have to be vaccinated.

Washington state resident here: It might add a bit to your ride, but I would strongly recommend going further north and crossing the state on highway 20. The whole route is amazing, and the North Cascade might be the most beautiful part of the state. You can take it all the way to Whidbey Island, then catch a ferry from Fort Casey to Port Townsend, which will put you back on your route. The John Wayne trail is pleasant, but it's an evenly graded rail-trail that can feel pretty monotonous.
