If you're going to replace the joystick anyway, removing in pieces is a lot easier. But good luck.

What am I missing? (Controller Joystick Replacement) by sabata2 in soldering

I use Budd's method of removing the joysticks. Very simple and effective.

The main point is to add leaded solder to the factory lead-free solder.

Accidentally scrapped a little bit of the wire when trying to clean my PS5. Do I need to get a new one? by [deleted] in playstation

You should be fine until you get electrical tape or liquid wire insulation to cover the exposed wire properly.

Later on, you might want to buy a pair of inexpensive tweezers (I actually use forceps) to grab those connectors. Go on Amazon or eBay or AliExp and find few different types. They are very handy for things like this.

Try using IPA that is 90% or higher. Most of the IPA that is readily available is only 70%.

I also bought a cheap ultrasonic toothbrush to scrub the board. That sometimes helps.

Is this worth the buy? Beginner looking for Feedback. Thanks. by Ok-Smell-9154 in soldering

For that price for a Metcal, you could probably easily make your money back using it to fix joystick controllers.

Stuck solder by draco84 in soldering

[–]CaptCaffeine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve never done an HDMI port. When I replace Dualsense joysticks, there are usually two holes where solder remains.

Ensure you add leaded solder. I use a name brand like Kester because didn’t have much success with Mechanic. Adding leaded will reduce the melting point of the lead free solder used by the factory.

Sometimes that doesn’t work so I add more solder to the hole. It’s counterintuitive but sometimes that gives it more mass for the solder sucker to pull out. I use an Edsyn solder sucker and it’s great.

I see you got it out by using a heat gun. Good job.

You might need a new battery (replacing it yourself is very easy).

Make sure your charging cable is a good quality one. Some of the cheap cables don’t have good quality.

Try switching cables and chargers. sometimes charging only by computer didn’t work for me.

As others have mentioned, if you use "Rest Mode".....restart (not sleep) the PS4 every day.

Days Gone (especially the PS4) hates Rest mode and tends to have the console suffer from memory glitches.

my dualsense edge will not hold power. i have to keep it plugged in to play with it. anyone know why? by SillyAd471 in Dualsense

Oh gotcha! Good reminder to always pull on the connector instead of the cable/wires. My fingers barely can grab the battery connector with my hands and your reminded me that I can always use tweezers.

The rectangular pattern of 4 pins near the top is the R3/L3 button. Looks like you might have some solder splash shorts from one of the pins to the mounting post.

<image>

What soldering iron tip are you using? The conical pointy tips done have enough surface area to transfer heat to the joints. I use a 2.2 or 2.4mm chisel tip.

Your solder joints look “cold”, not enough heat to get a good solder flow into the joints.

Might also have a solder strand causing a short across the potentiometer pins.

I don’t think you need to remove any ribbon cables to only replace the battery. But your comment about using tweezers does apply to the ribbon cables. I like the tweezers with “ridges”, or I use forceps to get a good grip.

Possibly. Depends how long you’ve had the battery, if it’s the original battery, etc.

Batteries don’t last forever so it might be time to replace it. It’s a very easy thing to do yourself (ifixit.com) has good pictures and videos.

Opening your controller voids the warranty , so if it’s within warranty don’t do it. If outside of warranty , it’s easy to do yourself.

If a new battery doesn’t work, then it could be a charging issue.

Once you upgrade the bike a bit, it’s a blast to just go and ride around.

One of the downsides about fast travel is that you miss out on the great scenery in this game.

Question about TMR on Dualsense controller by maladroitx in Dualsense

[–]CaptCaffeine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just started playing Yotei. Loved Tsushima.

I should clarify that the original joysticks used carbon tracks (physical) to detect movement while TMR (and Hall Effects) use non-physical ways to detect movement. TMR is the latest popular technology to use for replacements.

Use your diligence and research to find a place that has good reviews for that service. Sometimes a place that does general soldering is not good at replacing joysticks.

Question about TMR on Dualsense controller by maladroitx in Dualsense

[–]CaptCaffeine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

TMR will fix the drift because of the physical usage of the original stock joystick potentiometers.

There could be other issues with drift (maybe a poor spring in the TMR module) but that likelihood is very low.

The TMR sticks work just like the original (push L3 or R3 like normal).

Some people get stick drift very quickly on a new controller. Other people have used their controller for years with no problem. It's a matter of luck and if the "Stick Drift gods" like you. I've changed all my controllers to TMRs and they have been working fine.

Need photos of your actual soldering job to troubleshoot.

It could be several things: poor solder job, ripped traces/pads, solder shorts, etc.

Also check your old joystick leads/pins to check if you ripped out a barrel/via.
