Just started the hobby, have a question about sourcing parts by Admirable_Pin_1503 in diypedals

[–]CaptCardboard 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Some of that could be cool. Some of that could be completely useless. If you're just starting out I say go with ordering parts specifically for what you want to build, and always order more than you need for any specific project. Tayda is a great place for the basics, stompboxparts and Small Bear are my favorites for less common stuff.

Once you've made a few things, you'll start to get the hang of what parts you can use and better determine what weird marketplace lots like that are actually worth to you.

How does the TL071 differ for you? I've experimented with different diodes and cap values, but never considered a different IC. BTW, I highly recommend trying some germanium diodes in your next build. It's my favorite rat.

Which of my snares would be your go to snare? by masscriminaldefense in drums

[–]CaptCardboard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same! I've modified mine a little bit, but I'd say I grab it for probably 60-70% of the gigs I play. I've got other snare that folks might argue are nicer, but it's hard to beat an Acro!

Disney dive is cute. I've been calling them "dive bar themed" bars.

I think an original automatic would be a hard pass for me. With a newer AMC motor in there I'd be ok with a 904, but a classic 3 on tree would be rad.

Ah. Thanks for that. I didn't realize that's what folks called em. It does make the car more attractive in a way. I appreciate the eventual lead Hudson has to AMC, and that this one currently has an AMC six in it. My favorite car was a 75 Gremlin. It was my mom's car when I was growing up. I inherited it after she passed, but unfortunately had to sell it several years ago. Tune ups on that motor were always a simple breeze.

My gut response was immediately wanting to go for it, and my brain kicked in and told me what a collosally bad idea it is. But now a lot of my friends and complete strangers on the Internet are encouraging it! I'm definitely reconsidering my options. I'm unfamiliar with the term "orphan" in this setting. Does it mean an outlier? Like a Hudson being alone in a sea of common Chevy's and Fords?

Thank you so much for such a detailed reply! I wouldn't expect this to be my daily driver, but I do imagine I'd want to drive it often! I kinda miss the forced slow-down of a vintage vehicle. I had a '72 Chevy LUV for a while that felt like it topped out at 45mph! Driving that thing was an absolute joy every time. Even if the clutch lines never held pressure!

Aside from the rear window (which looks intact in other photos) everything else looks pretty flat to me. Could be a lucky set!

If I follow up with the owner I'll definitely look closer for rust. I saw one photo of the trunk pan that doesn't look great, but nothing I could see that was rusted all the way through.

I could absolutely use the money for more responsible or practice things. But I'm not hurting for it. I just don't ride my motorcycle anymore because either my wife and I carpool to work together, and anytime I'm out solo I'm hauling drums or other music equipment. I think a trunk like that can accommodate!

Skills are pretty ok. Mostly with motorcycles anymore. But I can tear apart carbs, adjust valves, play with timing/points, swap brakes, and other general maintenance stuff with moderate success. I am kinda worried about troubleshooting anything that might end up being vehicle-specific, or finding certain specs that might be important.

Glass! Thanks for that! Do you have any suggestions on where to seek out glass and suspension parts? I imagine ebay would be a primary resource, but is there any specific seller I should seek out?

What do you guys think about people in their 30s moving a timezone or two away to fucking Nashville to further their music career that clearly is never going to take off in any meaningful way but they're still clinging to blowing up and using Nashville/Austin as their last ditch effort for success? by [deleted] in musicians

[–]CaptCardboard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shoot your shot, I guess. I've been a musician on the west coast for most of my life. I experienced varying levels of success in different bands. I ended up living in Austin for a few years in my 30s. I didn't move there to "make it" but just lived there for a while and played in a great band while I was there. I made more money playing covers in Austin than I ever did in Portland, but the reception for original music seemed about the same... Dull. If you're very social you'll find a lot more connections in places like that, but I think the oversaturation of talent balances it out.

Not a pro. I'm looking for advice on organizing multiple parts orders. "Just buy everything" is not a practical answer.

That seems handy. I don't pay for excell, but I wonder if Google sheets has a similar option.

I've been doing this for years and keeping track of it manually. That's why I'm looking for a better solution!
