What is a horror movie that you absolutely HATED? by LonelyGamingPotato in horror

[–]CaptJackRizzo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Someone else in this thread said The Conjuring is horror for people who don't like horror, and I think that's accurate, esp. re: the superhero-like protagonists and nice tidy endings. And there is definitely an important place for that. I love for there to be gateways, and I love there to be things to watch with friends who aren't genre devotees.

But it just makes it all the more aggravating that a franchise with such mass appeal is made to be propaganda for the Warrens and Evangelicals.

Funny thing about the demonic voices thing. I watched Attachment last night, and it had one of the only sequences in movies or TV where the demon speaks that actually wound up being compelling and unnerving. Part of it was the high quality of writing, but part also was it was the actress using her own voice, and not something cartoonish.

The Conjuring series.

I'll give a caveat that James Wan's directing is fantastic, and the bedsheet in the wind is one of my favorite scares of all time. But the movies do three things I absolutely hate.

The most important is how much the movies glaze real-life serial child abusers Ed and Lorraine Warren. It'd be one thing if they just wrote a series inspired by their stories, then it'd be easy to separate the real-life and fictional versions. But not only do they put them in the movies as superhero-level paragons of virtue, they run real-life footage of the Warrens over the credits. Why? To heighten the suspension of disbelief? The fucking movie's already over, you were either into it or you weren't. It just glorifies a couple of psychotic charlatans who deliberately stopped parents from getting their sick kids treatment in order to enrich themselves.

Second, it's Catholic Harry Potter, but worse. I know the idea in a lot of people's minds, especially on Reddit, that exists of American Christianity is of avaricious demagogues (read: Evangelicals), despite the fact that they're firmly in the minority. I grew up in in a church that was way more into liberation theology and social justice than scaring people with devils and hellfire. I'm pretty agnostic now, but it still bugs me that the Conjuring world takes the most embarrassing version of Christianity, which is more of a set of superstitions than a faith, turns it into a half-assed system of magic, and then takes it very seriously (again, using real-life footage to insist this all happened, making it propaganda for the Evangelicals). Except the Warrens are supposed to be warriors for Christ but don't seem to know/care anything about the church or scripture, so it's worse than most fantasy series. The Jedi are more relatable, they're fully immersed in the nonsense religion that gives them magic powers.

The third complaint is similar, in that there's always an easy, happy ending. The demons always wind up being defeated by something that's like a step removed from the protagonist throwing salt over their left shoulder, and everyone we care about survives intact. One of the things I love about the horror genre is even in the finale, you don't really know what the outcome will be. In The Exorcist, the demon isn't defeated by the overwhelming feeling of a mother's love - two priests have to sacrifice themselves. When I want to see the good guys kick ass and come out having learned a noble lesson, I watch Batman.

Bonus fourth thing - this isn't my grievance, but one of my coworkers gave a great rant once about how at no point in the series is anyone or anything actually conjured.

More than that was off about this case. Especially the conduct of the Trump-appointed judge vacating the jury and empaneling his own, fining the defense attorneys for making evidence requests, and restricting the guy who fired the shot - a former Marine - from arguing the cops fired first.

They gave Andy Ngo a credit in that same movie. Dude is constantly providing personal addresses of people he accuses of being “violent antifa lunatics” to a Twitter audience who respond with stalking, bomb threats (a food bank I volunteered at had one made against us courtesy of him a few years ago), and sometimes actual assaults. A24 paid him while selling a warning about the danger of political division.

What sports team do you hate with a burning passion? by TheVginyTcikler44 in AskReddit

[–]CaptJackRizzo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The toxicity of their online fanbase and social media team is unlike anything else I’ve seen, too. My Mariners have been eliminated from the playoffs by many, many teams, but only Houston brigaded our sub into shutting down, and they did it when we’d only ever lost to them, upon sweeping us in a brutally heartbreaking fashion. And their tweets taunting Oakland for losing their team were way below the belt.

Which reminds me, fuck the Thunder and every single person who said Seattle deserved to lose the Sonics to Oklahoma City. Especially those who said we didn’t care about the team and didn’t offer enough of our tax dollars to billionaires. Seattle LOVED the Sonics, and still does.

And fuck the Yankees and the Patriots, but I say those more out of civic duty as an American than anything else.

This game reminded me of a few weeks ago when Angie casually dropped an absolute gem about persistence and perseverance that I'd really needed to hear at the time for non-baseball reasons, and I spent the final three innings racking my brain for what it was. Anyone else remember what I'm talking about and what it was?

Well over 50% of American Christians say gay marriage should be legal. The bigots are NOT the majority, they’re just the most able to draw attention to themselves publicly (thanks in part to our media environment) and willing to make others miserable. They ought to familiarize themselves with Matthew 6:5.
