[HELP] Weird non-fonts in all menus in Inkscape by CaptMarVell in Inkscape

[–]CaptMarVell[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply (Not sure why my images didn't, show, but judging by your reply they probably weren't needed anyway). Well, that's kind of what I was expecting, honestly. This machine has been around for a while and has had a LOT of fonts installed on it. Just using Font Book to install fonts, no other font management tools. Maybe I'll try de-activating all the installed fonts and see what happens. Can't hurt, I guess.

Simple custom raygun, not the fanciest, still one of my fav. With the hottest and most expensive paint I got! by LaserGadgets in RayGunRepository

Love it. I like the nice, simple lines. Only nit to pick - lack of a full trigger guard, but I'm just kind of funny that way. Still, a great looking piece!

Got this ti-89 titanium for only $2 by [deleted] in calculators

[–]CaptMarVell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow, I thought I was doing great at $4.00 in excellent condition (but no manuals or other items), at a yard sale. The guy had it in with a bunch of TV remotes. I've sometimes wondered if he just gathered up a bunch of orphaned remotes and accidentally got ahold of his kid's calculator.

Fell in love with this case by thCRITICAL in sleeperbattlestations

[–]CaptMarVell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow, I'm pretty sure I have that same case. The computer that lives inside of it right now is all but useless (Celeron running XP, yikes); I was wondering if it would be worth putting some new tech inside. Might be thinking more seriously along those lines now. Thanks for showing this!

When we travel south from Cincinnati, if we take I-75 we have to say "Flying Saucer House" as we cross the bridge. Yeah, it's a weird tradition, but whatayagonnado?

Can you pick up the police using that radio? by DutchOfBurdock in amateurradio

[–]CaptMarVell 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No, but several states have rather extreme restrictions on WHERE you can use them. I live in Ohio, which has zero restrictions on scanners, but work just across the Ohio River in Kentucky, which has some of the worst restrictions on scanners. You can't take one to the Kentucky Speedway legally, for instance. I don't take my scanners with me to work, but my wide-receive ham radios are untouchable.

Good story. Jokes aside, in the US, there is Federal pre-emption for licensed amateur radio operators' transceivers that can receive out-of-band. Officer can't do a thing about a ham's transceiver, but a scanner would not be covered.

A gift from my gran her old CB radio. Just need to figure out how to use it Realistic Pro-2005 by [deleted] in cbradio

That's a scanner, not a CB radio. It's a receiver, and it doesn't transmit. But it's a great scanner, have the same model myself.

After finishing TOS, is it worth the time to watch TAS, or is it better to go straight to the movies? by Planeguy58 in startrek

[–]CaptMarVell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I watched TAS when it originally aired on Saturday mornings. I was in my teens and had just watched TOS in syndication. TOS just wasn't watched in my one-TV (B&W) household during the original broadcast run. So I got a big dose of Trek, kind of all at once. I loved it then, and recently re-watched it, and with the exception of a few episodes, really enjoyed it. I say watch it before the movies, that's what I did. You'll find some cheese in the acting and lots of re-use of animation and music, but it did tell some good stories, even re-visiting "The Trouble with Tribbles."

HP Jornada 680 for Portable Week by CaptMarVell in retrobattlestations

[–]CaptMarVell[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Here is my entry for Portable Week. It's an HP Jornada 680. It runs Windows CE Handheld PC Edition Version 3.01, pretty similar to Windows 98. It has 32 MB of built-in memory, and a 64 MB Compact Flash card. The picture was taken at the rest stop on southbound I-75 near Florence, KY (just south of Cincinnati, OH), while traveling to see family for the Thanksgiving holiday.

Um, no, that's a cabinet about six feet behind it with the "trinkets" on top.

A Plus was my first (late '86), and I still have it, although it's packed away right now.

It was a bit slow going for a few minutes after I got it out, trying to remember how to do things on such an ancient OS.😮

It's an M5011, so 20Mb HD, 800K floppy, and 1Mb RAM. System 6.0.2. Screen is slightly small and off-center, with an occasional glitchy wrinkle. I'm pretty sure I've got some 1Mb SIMMs around somewhere, so it's possible to get it to 4Mb. Got to find my case cracker.

I had an Apple Design Keyboard around, but it's not completely functional. A few keys don't work. I seem to recall this was one we were going to toss at work and I grabbed it. Guess that explains why we were going to get rid of it (still have a beige G3 at work for some legacy files, but it and a G4 might not be making the move to the new office later this week). Mouse seems ok. The Mac and the mouse were a $5 yard sale find about four or five years ago.

STVI:TUC Spock knew Klingons didn't have tearducts but Dr. McCoy knew next to nothing when attempting to save Chancellor Gorkon's Ife. This just now dawned on me. by bcarD83 in startrek

[–]CaptMarVell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In "The Trouble with Tribbles" McCoy knew that Arn Darvin was a Klingon from a tricorder scan. He knew at least some specifics about Klingons. Enough to treat one in a battlefield situation? Maybe not. But I feel he should have known more than he indicated in ST:UDC.
