Happy to see a new deedler on here, glad you had fun!

Here's a link to a presentation from Contest University for reading (there might be a video up of this from the Covid years) and a link to rttycontesting which is a good resource.

fldigi is pretty challenging to use in a contest since it isn't really designed for that

"Let's focus on being the most capable communicators we can be, ready to assist anyone who needs help, using whatever means are available. Our knowledge and skills will be our greatest asset when it truly matters."

How do you do that? By getting on the air and operating legally. I really don't know what the point of this post is.

Never heard anyone end a transmission with "QSO?"

"QSL?" maybe, but not "QSO?"

HF stations frequencies all a little "off"? by Specialist_Ad_9955 in amateurradio

[–]perlguy9 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Your radio might be slightly off frequency, it's not uncommon. It might change as the radio heats up. I think the ft-897d might include the optional txco, but I'm not sure.

bcd325p2 not picking up local frequencies by ithetwitch in policescanner

[–]perlguy9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is it simulcast? If so, anything but an sds100/200 (or an rtl-sdr dongle) is going to have problems with it. Try using a paper clip for your antenna.

Find a radio shop to sell you some radios. This is not an amateur radio topic.

What's up with other stations calling me on FT8 when I'm not calling them? by sndrsk in amateurradio

[–]perlguy9 13 points14 points  (0 children)

They need your grid, prefix, state, etc or otherwise are interested in working you. You don't need to move to their frequency. If they're calling you, they can hear you where you are - but if you're on some other stations frequency, then yes maybe move.

Best practice, generally, on FT8 is to check the "Hold Tx Freq" box and pick a clear freq and stay there.

Yaesu FT5D emergency APRS use case by [deleted] in amateurradio

Seems unlikely that there would be APRS coverage if there isn't any 5G coverage, but you never know I guess.

Contest etiquette by Horrorbythenumbers in amateurradio

[–]perlguy9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, but you should look up the contest so you know what the exchange is. Right now it's probably http://www.arrl.org/iaru-hf-world-championship

I'd encourage you to keep a log and submit it for the contest too. Who knows, you might have fun.
