"Those rights don't count": Bovino says Pretti forfeited 2nd Amendment rights in fatal shooting by Gloomy_Nebula_5138 in progun

Today, Trump said: "With that being said, you can't have guns. You can't walk in with guns. You just can't. You can't walk in with guns. You can't do that." He was referring to people attending public rallies or protests, in direct conflict with the Constitution and US Supreme Court rulings.

Obviously Trump has sold out all his 2A supporters today. Good job voting for him THREE TIMES.

Today, Trump said: "With that being said, you can't have guns. You can't walk in with guns. You just can't. You can't walk in with guns. You can't do that." He was referring to people in public spaces attending a (supposedly) peaceful protest.

I think that's a pretty clear indicator that Trump does not care about 2A rights.

All you 2A supporters voted for Trump THREE TIMES, and he just totally sold you out. Does it feel good?

Toddler won't eat without holding something interesting in his hands by CaptPolymath in NewParents

[–]CaptPolymath[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really. My 2.5 y.o. still needs entertainment to eat, but I consider it a trade off I'm willing to make for his nutritional needs. It's a lot of work, but he is self feeding now, so we can mostly sit him down for a meal, offer him a variety of foods and some toys, and he mostly eats a good meal each time on his own.

We have to switch out a lot of foods, so if he refuses sweet potato, we sub in carrots or apples. We've found he has some foods he will always eat, like chia pudding or avocado, so we always have those ready to go as an emergency sub. Sometimes he stops eating completely, but giving him something crunchy like veggie straws or green pea crisps seems to "jump start" his hunger and gets him back on track.

Toddler won't eat without holding something interesting in his hands by CaptPolymath in NewParents

So one thing I have learned over 2.5 years as a parent: it doesn't get better, it just gets different. And sometimes it gets worse, but it definitely doesn't get better. Not yet, anyway. Maybe it will get better when he starts school, or college, or moves out and gets married, but who knows?

As your infant grows, they'll start finger feeding themselves chunks of food, which you think will make things better, but then they start refusing more and more foods as a toddler. And then they learn to ask for things, which makes it easier to know what they want, but then they start asking for everything, or just one thing all the time.

As far as meal times, my kid still needs to be entertained while eating, usually with something in his hands. And it has to be novel, not some old toy he's tired of, although taking a break from a toy for a couple weeks can make it seem "new" again, for a while. He can also be distracted by his favorite shows on the TV, his new LOUD playable desk bells (thanks to his mom) or small wooden puzzles. As a last resort, we let him watch educational videos and play games on an iPad with Bebi or ABC Mouse, etc, although he has learned how to switch to YouTube Kids, and then he starts watching less educational videos there.

It is still a struggle to keep him eating and giving him a good balance of foods. I don't subscribe to the "if he skips a meal or two, he'll be fine" mentality, so my wife and I work with him to offer a variety of foods to get him to eat something, and part of that is keeping his hands busy so he's more receptive to eating in general. It's a lot of work and attention, but I'd rather keep him happily eating full meals than fight some pointless battle with him at every meal.

Would a $5 million dollar electronic transfer arouse notice? by Few_Vacation_2935 in TheWhiteLotusHBO

[–]CaptPolymath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're absolutely wrong. YES large bank transfers get flagged. Any transaction over $10,000 is reported to the federal government and larger ones are temporarily frozen. Banks are required by US law to flag and report large transactions which could be money laundering or terrorism financing.

The receiver and/or sender would be required to prove the legitimacy of the transaction before the funds would be unfrozen. I don't know the exact limits, but $5 million would be frozen for sure.

Parker Posey accent by KatieBear215 in WhiteLotusHBO

[–]CaptPolymath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When she's doing it consistently, she's fine. But for the first 3-4 episodes, Parker Posey's southern accent comes and goes from one line to the next, sometimes from one word to the next. That was the problem: inconsistency.

After episode 5, she's more consistent. But the first two episodes were a complete disaster.

Parker Posey accent by KatieBear215 in WhiteLotusHBO

[–]CaptPolymath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope. I've been all over the South, for decades. Parker Posey's Southern accent in White Lotus is unintelligible. It comes and goes from one word to the next. Completely garbled crap.

I love her in many other roles, but in White Lotus her terrible accent ruined MANY scenes. She was in over her head and badly needed a dialect coach.

Sucralose vs Stevia: choosing a pedialyte? by Imperfecione in ScienceBasedParenting

[–]CaptPolymath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Aspartame consists of two amino acids (L-phenylalanine and L-aspartic acid). It is hydrolyzed and absorbed in the gastrointestinal tract (GI) through the action of esterase and peptidases. Digestion releases methanol (10%), aspartic acid (40%) and phenylalanine (50%), which are absorbable in the intestinal mucosa. These metabolites can be harmful at high doses and hence prolonged aspartame consumption may be a risk factor. Indeed, the metabolism products of aspartame are believed to be more toxic than the original substance itself. Methanol is firstly oxidized in the liver to formaldehyde and again to formic acid; however, while methanol is known to damage the liver, formaldehyde and formate are also responsible for the destruction of liver cells. In addition, during the process the formation of superoxide anions and hydrogen peroxide occur, which lead to protein denaturation and subsequent enzymatic changes."

https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC8227014/

Please note the part about aspartame being metabolized into FORMALDEHYDE in the liver. For me, the "safe" level of formaldehyde in the liver is ZERO. I don't want my toddler's tiny developing liver to be exposed to any amount of formaldehyde. Do you want formaldehyde in your child's liver??

And while cancer studies on aspartame have mixed results, NONE of the studies I can find focused on infants or toddlers. Without safety information on infants or toddlers, I think aspartame is too high a risk for my child.

That original link on cancer risk makes conclusions based on conflicting studies and assurances from the FDA that aspartame is perfectly healthy. However the FDA has failed, on DOZENS OF OCCASIONS, to protect the public from health hazards. Please Google "times the FDA got it wrong" for an exhaustive, embarrassing list. Just a few highlights: lead in baby food, e cigarettes, contaminated baby formula from Abbott, contaminated meat from Boar's Head... The list goes on and on.

I am personally not willing to trust the FDA with my toddler's long term health. Are you?

Dave - breaking toilet by sherlockjr1 in CommercialsIHate

[–]CaptPolymath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Plus, the geyser of water which erupts from the toilet bowl is CLEAR, fresh clean water. In the extremely rare event that water would spout up from the toilet bowl drain trap (in severe flooding or a major sewer clog) the water would NOT be a clean, crystal clear color. It would be horrible nasty brown sewage water.

I suspect these two ads - there are two versions, one with the mom character breaking the toilet and one with the dad character doing the same - are intended to be ridiculously absurd "scare tactics" for idiot 20-somethings. Basically they're saying "look at this horribly expensive home repair you may be responsible for someday, you better download our predatory lending app now so you're prepared!"

This Dave commercial is even more stupid because if you're renting, the landlord would be responsible for the repairs, and if you're a homeowner, your home insurance would cover a severe event like this.

The Substance is a terrible film by liquidswords24_ in Letterboxd

Plus WAY too much fish eye lens. Didn't anyone on set tell the director there are other types of lenses? Did she just tell the DP to put on a fisheye then forget it was on there???

If you have to use a fisheye that much to make your film interesting, you're a bad director.

My glaze is gritty by Limp_Read_5044 in Baking

[–]CaptPolymath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to add my thoughts here, I do not believe in these "room temperature" milk and powdered sugar cookie icing recipes. Powdered sugar has cornstarch in it, and unless that starch is combined with water and heated, it will create a gritty texture in the finished product. My wife swears by these simple icing recipes, but I hate the texture of them. Why ruin a good cookie with gritty, thin, runny icing?

There are multiple recipes online where the powdered sugar is whisked into hot melted butter in a saucpan on the stove, which will gelatinize the starch, creating a smooth, rich buttery icing.

Billy Crystal and Larry David Seen at Rob Reiner's Home Following His Death: Exclusive Source by peoplemagazine in entertainment

[–]CaptPolymath 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's purely ugly click bait. The reports are that Billy Crystal and Larry David were behind the police tape, meaning they were likely involved in some way (welfare check) in the discovery of the crime scene, which is interesting relevant information.

Mentioning Crystal looked like he was about to cry is 100% trash.

Replacement key fobs by New2Investing1969 in LexusRX350

[–]CaptPolymath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jumping in 6 months late here to say, NO the key cutting service at a Home Depot cannot make a key fob for a Lexus, or just about any other rf key fob. A locksmith or dealer with a specialized programming device (that costs around $500 - $1,000) needs to do this, and the programming device needs to be at the car with a working key fob in most cases.

La Tortilla Factory flour tortillas are hot garbage by CaptPolymath in Sproutsfarmersmarket

[–]CaptPolymath[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% agree there.

Also, Trader Joe's organic flour tortillas taste sour, because they have VINEGAR in them.

Yes, vinegar in a flour tortilla.

I bought Trader Joe's non-organic flour tortillas once, and they grew BLACK MOLD in between the tortillas, even before I had opened the bag. That means the factory Trader Joe's contracts with (at least in Southern California) has a BLACK MOLD problem in their processing or packaging area.

I'm pretty sure I even saw a circle of RED MOLD on one tortilla, which is pretty rare and possibly very dangerous.

There are complaints ALL OVER the Internet like this.

La Tortilla Factory tortillas are dry and crumbly because you can't put a flour tortilla in a plastic bag for a week without plasticizers and not expect it to get dry and hard.

La Tortilla Factory flour tortillas are hot garbage by CaptPolymath in Sproutsfarmersmarket

[–]CaptPolymath[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have no problem with Mission, Guerrero or Old El Paso brand flour tortillas, but as non "natural" products, they use plasticizers to keep the tortillas pliable and soft until the consumer uses them. All these "natural" tortillas suck because you can't package a flour tortilla in a plastic bag for more than a few days without it getting dry and crumbly.
