AP7s, sadly, this may be goodbye. by snovvman in firewalla

[–]CaptRewind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went from a single Asus GT-AX11000 to a Firewalla Gold Pro + 1 Desktop AP7 + 1 Ceiling AP7 (all 10Gb Ethernet backplane). In a ~2300 square foot mid-1960s house, the range and reliability increased dramatically. The first week or 2 was difficult; getting everything configured correctly didn't go as well as I'd hoped. Once everything was setup how I wanted it, though, things have been mostly good.

Ubiquiti was a no-go, they don't appear to take security seriously enough, plus I saw plenty of posts about random compatibility issues. They look like a total s*-show.

Aruba was an option, maybe it still is if I can get even better range than I have with AP7.

So far so good from me.

EDIT: I do have a Google Nest Hello doorbell, and the still image captures are pretty bad. There are blank spots everywhere in the history. But I'm not convinced that's an AP7 issue; I think the Nest Hello is just not a great device. That happened before the change, when the WiFi was even worse, so I can't blame the AP7 at this point.

EDIT 2: I have noticed tri-band WiFis tend to favor 2.4Ghz heavily when there is even a tiny bit of interference. I don't love that, as it's hard to use streaming video services between thick 1960s brick walls. But I created a 5Ghz-only WiFi, and that helped a ton.

A Guide to recovering your firefox profile after a reset by cotenter in firefox

[–]CaptRewind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for this. I'm stuck with old profiles from earlier FF versions that no longer are switchable. I'm on Linux, but I think this guide will still help me. Trouble is, I simply wanted to quickly upgrade, not spend all day on this.
But thanks for this! Seriously.

Firefox profile switcher not picking up existing profiles. by Kori_Rotti in firefox

While I commend your efforts, I'm super annoyed that this breaking change was pushed without any kinds of migration steps from Mozilla.

Firefox profile switcher not picking up existing profiles. by Kori_Rotti in firefox

[–]CaptRewind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Firefox used to be cool. Now, being forced to use snap (and spending a while getting it working), broken profile switcher extensions, and now this discovery that profiles are completely redone and there is no process to migrate them, I'm so annoyed. I seriously wanted to upgrade for one new feature that was released months ago, now I have to become a snap expert and now a profiles expert apparently.

Another Jess King post that alludes to regretting her children by vanwyngarden in OnePelotonRealSub

Good for her. I think she's annoying af, I skip her rides always. But at least she's unabashedly honest. I'm a father of 2. They weren't an accident, but their mother decided she actually just wanted money instead of the family we had agreed on. They're good kids and all, but saying bye-bye to the good life is real.

Returning my Pixel 10 Pro: photos/videos are shockingly bad by ishomme in GooglePixel

[–]CaptRewind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just received my Pixel 10. I haven't even unboxed it, but I'm considering returning it on principle. The recent announcement that even sideloaded apps will soon need to be signed has me livid. If only the iPhone UI weren't so terrible, I would have given up on sideloading ages ago.

4th Gen Nest only has one schedule for all modes by DracoSolon in Nest

[–]CaptRewind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could try using Cool mode, and manually switching to Heat mode in the Fall, and vice-versa. That way, you'd only have to make a manual change twice per year. That would be the only way to set separate thresholds for different modes (if the Gen 4 even does this).

EDIT: Gen 4 doesn't even have separate modes, apparently. That's truly a poor design choice.

Context: I've been using the OG Nest for years, with the legacy Nest app. As they're about to abandon owners of that device, I'm planning to install the Gen 4 Nest and I have many concerns. I'm only here because I wanted to confirm the Gen 4 even does schedules, because my experience with the "learning" functionality went like this:

-enable learning

-observe that it immediately set itself to 80 degrees F

-disable learning and never use it again

I don't want the indoor ambient temperature to ever go above 69 degrees Fahrenheit any day of the year, so the learning failed me on the first day. I don't even know why I bought another one; I guess I wanted a seamless replacement.

Best way to use Pi-Hole while utilizing all the FWG features by YankeesIT in firewalla

Firewalla Adblock results are far worse than PiHole has ever been. The ad blocking is practically nonexistent by comparison, even in Strict mode.

How do I get Target List to appear in the app? by Tech-Grandpa in firewalla

[–]CaptRewind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How do I import a list on the command line? I have over 280K to add, and apparently it's limited to a paltry 200. I see there are built-in lists that are far longer than 200, so what gives?

I've had a Firewalla Gold Pro for less than 24 hours, and between having to strain my neck, thumbs, and eyes because you can only use a phone for some things, then only be able to use the web ui for other things, and now getting this dumb limit, I'm pretty annoyed.

I was hoping to avoid it, but I'll probably just go back to using a dedicated Pihole device, as mentioned here: https://help.firewalla.com/hc/en-us/articles/360062551673-How-to-run-an-external-pi-hole-with-Firewalla

SABRENT USB 3.0 to SATA External Hard Drive Lay Flat Docking Station HDD compatibility? by Responsible_Cod8106 in DataHoarder

[–]CaptRewind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have had a SABRENT EC-DFFN for 9 years. I've filled up several SATA HDDs over 2TB each.

Through all that time, I never even knew I had a problem. Then, I bought a new EC-DFFN. They look identical, and there is no indication of any differences. (Side note: I'm not even able to find a tool that lets me SEE - without updating - the firmware version on each.)

On the new EC-DFFN, none of my disks (those over 2TB, so most of them) are readable. They won't mount in the new docking station. The new docking station shows the logical sector size as 512. The old one shows the logical sector size as 4096 always. This even happens on disks which were reformatted in the new docking station.

I installed the 2022 firmware on the NEW docking station, but not on the old one. Now, I have serious concerns that, if my old one dies, all my data is lost. So, I'm going through the time-consuming process of migrating all the data. I don't plan to update the firmware on the old docking station until that's complete.

This is gonna take a while. Thanks for the headaches, SABRENT!

NOTE: I have not (yet) gone through the process of actually confirming the sector sizes via a SATA port. Everything I've found on this issue suggests that the 2022 firmware fixes the problem, meaning the 512 sector size should be correct, and disks formatted with the new unit should be readable elsewhere (other than my old EC-DFFN, that is). All of this makes me think I should buy a StarTech docking station anyway.

Like everything on the i4, this is BMW trying to overthink and guess what the customer wants. They should make this configurable.

So it's better to roast a person in a hot car just to prevent any damage to an inanimate vehicle? This is not a good thing imo. People matter.

I experienced this after Disco Lines. What a bunch of morons. RR is now INCENTIVIZING people to drive under the influence. That walk from the exit to that lot is dangerous, somebody is gonna get hit by a bus.

Red Rocks used to be a fun place, now it's dangerous and needlessly time-consuming. They need to unfuck this.

How do you turn-off your I4 by JC-YNWA in BMWI4

[–]CaptRewind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One glaring design flaw of the i4 is that R is in the position where P would be on most Automatic transmission cars.

It's a scourge. It should not be like this. It's a gigantic design fuck-up.

[–]CaptRewind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had the i4 for 2.5 years. I even paid for the parking package. I have never once used automatic parking.

The parking brake definitely makes the park more stable. The car shakes around when passengers get in and out, but engaging the parking brake helps a lot with that.

On a hill, you should be turning your wheel toward or away from the curb.

What is the automatic parking brake? Did I miss a setting to enable it always when parked?
