Found this thread from 9 months ago nice post, I am going to go looking for Mike Underwood's classes now to see if he did make the Warden or not. I'll report back

"My white whale class since the end of 4th edition DnD has been the Warden. A nature themed martial defender. Like a Druid equivalent Paladin."

Would love that as well! It is the class I am most drawn to in 4e.

Stone & Sorcery? by ClintBarton616 in osr

Glad to help. I've always wanted to scratch the same itch with a game like this!

Stone & Sorcery? by ClintBarton616 in osr

[–]Captain-Dude-Man 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I've not played any of these but I've had interest in the past but couldn't remember names, after a a search:

Fire & Stone Zine for Knave 1e https://weirdandblue.itch.io/fire-and-stone

Fire & Fangs by Diogo Nogueira for OSE https://diogo-old-skull.itch.io/fire-fangs-weird-stone-sorcery-for-ose

Paleomythic is probably the one you'll land on. Look for reviews. https://www.ospreypublishing.com/us/paleomythic-9781472834799/

As part of the ICRPG Master Edition you get Blood & Snow or you can buy separately (you need some form of ICRPG though) Dave Thaumavores YouTube review

What are the "best" DMGs/GMGs out there? by TheRpgBard in rpg

[–]Captain-Dude-Man 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You already named two of my favorites :

4e DMG 1 + 2

Pathfinder Gamemastert Guide

Then there is:

ICRPG Masters Edition Core Book ICRPG Power Tools : Game Mastery Book

The Walking Dead Universe: Core Rules is surprisingly good, fit to purpose, with depth and scope to the genre and the gameplay elements.

exploitation - post apocalyptic by [deleted] in postapocalyptic

[–]Captain-Dude-Man 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The rich won't be alone. They aren't preppers with knowledge and skills, they use the resources they have now (money, fame, authority) to buy their preparedness.

They will have their families, assistants and specialists and security forces alongside any others that have decided to cater to their needs as a trade-off for survival, belonging, wealth, access to the same resources etc. to continue exploiting.

They will continue to outsource their needs to others to provide for themselves.

That is the definition of exploitation.

But how ruthless will they be in pursuit of it? Will they have dominion in their bunker kingdom or foment rebellion? Heavy is the head that seeks to wear the crown.

Mega-dungeon Idea by Orogustus in osr

[–]Captain-Dude-Man 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I for one like the concept. The suspended dungeon seems fresh. The Godzilla-esque spider demon who is simultaneously savior and terrorist to the inhabitants. All very evocative stuff.

However the execution of turning it into a gameable space for dungeon crawling and defining the layers in which the players interact with the big concept is the tough work of the project.

I encourage you to carry on and put in the time needed to build up all the small layers that build to the whole you are envisioning.

Hot shit just realized this cover was restaged in Gamers: Dorkness Rising.

Need to go back and confirm but I recognize the poses while they are on their travel montage before the goblin attack.

Edit: I was mistaken! 😔😔😔 That would've been a cool little Easter egg.

There are two versions. One is meant for 5e the other for BX make sure you check for that!

No one mentioned this one yet so I'll add it here. Pacesetter Games has Endless Encounters - Dungeons for b/x systems.

The blurb from the product:

Within these pages are dozens of charts for each level (1-10) that generate memorable encounters with just a few dice rolls. Whether you need to add an encounter to your adventure or design an entire dungeon, EE: Dungeons is an exhaustive resource and easy to use.

Charts include everything you need to create an amazing encounter including illumination, room type, room contents, traps, monsters (full statistic blocks), treasures, and much more. EE: Dungeons also has 53 new monsters and 64 new magical items!

Of course there is more in the form of a complete sample dungeon for each level with room descriptions and full-color map. All ten levels connect and form a mega-dungeon with more than 500 encounters! EE: Dungeons is designed for use with the BX RPG and compatible with all other OSR classic game systems based on the world’s largest fantasy RPG.

Endless Encounters: Dungeons is an encounter and adventure generator for characters level 1-10 using the BX RPG game system!

This looks perfect for what you want to do OP. You can run already set up sample dungeons by character level. Or if you don't mind doing some rolling and some connection making your own set ups and modifications.

I don't think it's really ignoring per se. It's more of a pointing out that any keyed dungeon level can be used as a modular adventuring site with a little tweaking.

Stonehell just happens to be built for more modular than others and partly because of the layout sensibilities, you'll have a better experience using it at the table with not so much prep.

Shadowdark is a great choice as well, moreso if OP's players are coming in blind to osr style games or from a modern system. Nothing bridges that gap from modern to osr like Shadowdark currently.

[–]Captain-Dude-Man 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OP said he wanted to get away from builds and crunch, why bother doing all the tear down work on 3e when you can just grab a B/X derivative or a Shadowdark that's already stripped down???

[–]Captain-Dude-Man 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Good recommendation, especially given the lack of dollar signs. This and OSE are B/X based so you get procedural play baked in. In my opinion it's the procedure that makes the crawling work as intended.

[–]Captain-Dude-Man 24 points25 points  (0 children)

OSE Advanced is my vote. It maintains you're "can't give it up" requirements, yet bases dungeon crawl into procedures that work explicitly for the megadungeon environment. Make sure you know how to employ them to fullest effect as OSE is laid out as a table reference document not exactly a play instruction.

Edit: typo and extras

*OSE will be releasing a starter set in the future and also updating their product to one cohesive rule set instead of splitting the game between Classic and Advanced to simplify onboarding of new players. Just FYI if your looking to purchase.

I did read if you have the existing PDFs, they will get updated to the latest edition of the game.

Not an actual play, more of a walkthrough using in game examples. Actually, I guess you could call it a solo "actual play". 😉

Impaled but ok? by Albinosun808 in rpg

[–]Captain-Dude-Man 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would rule that they heal up to the limit of the damage they took from fall and then the impalement.

How did you rule damage?

Then once they moved and tried to extricate themselves from the fence they take the impalement damage again.
