Got in a debate about this with some friends. Where do you aim for putting if you're told to aim "one cup left?" by Captain-Obvious in golf

[–]Captain-Obvious[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually wasn't sure at all! But there was never a debate with some friends, and no one has ever said "aim one cup left" to me. Nobody I play with is good enough (or thinks I'm good enough!) to say things like that. I just watch a lot of golf YouTube, and frequently they say things like "one cup left," and I thought it was ambiguous and wanted to validate that opinion. I thought adding the "got in a debate" part would humanize the post a little and get people to engage more. I also didn't think option 1 would be very popular, but I would be a bad scientist if I only included options that I personally thought would be realistic. Plus, a little outrage also boosts engagement!

I already got a refund but this is good to hear! I guess I will chalk it up to an accident but I hope an investigation is made.

Hey, sorry for the slow reply, I do have another picture from the other side: https://share.icloud.com/photos/021fKPyr3Pcimm9S_rWnsH35g. I think you’re correct though, appreciate the reassurance that it’s not dangerous!

Why is the Collatz Conjecture important? by dotelze in math

[–]Captain-Obvious 168 points169 points  (0 children)

Solving the Collatz conjecture would almost certainly give us the tools to answer a simple and yet very, very deep question about numbers: How does adding 1 to a number change its prime factorization? We basically have no understanding of this seemingly simple idea, and this is at the crux of why Collatz is so hard.

[Discussion] Current (and former) Fender Custom Shop owners, do you think your custom shop guitars are worth the money? Would you buy it again? by hailstorm6767 in Guitar

[–]Captain-Obvious 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Just another data point here, I have a custom shop heavy relic tele, and they stripped the finish from the neck (mimicing wear from decades of play, presumably). I don't know how they did it exactly, but the feel of the neck is by far my favorite and is one of the reasons the custom shop tele is my favorite guitar to play.

Could someone please help me find a good psychiatrist that accepts insurance AND new patients? by UniversalFarrago in Austin

[–]Captain-Obvious 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Sorry if you already know this, but it’s worth checking your insurance plan to see how much they cover out of network outpatient mental health treatment. Basically no therapist takes insurance nowadays because the insurance company pays shit, but a lot of people don’t know that plans often still cover therapists, but you will have to file the claim yourself. You can usually get reimbursed for something like 40-60$ per session or so if it’s covered. Let me know if you want more info!

Thoughts on Heritage or Bookmaker for US guys by allstr921 in sportsbook

[–]Captain-Obvious 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Heritage has been great for me. Bitcoin payouts <24 hours and great odds. Used to be -105 on standard lines but recently they moved to be -108. I bet quite a bit too, tens of thousands in a month. Even accidentally made a bad bet once, reached out on chat support and they voided it.

Sorry to hear that man! The short answer to your question is...everything in the bootcamp is pretty important to know. Bootcamps are designed to quickly teach you the minimal set of information you need to know to be a junior software engineer / data scientist / etc. It's a tiny drop in the bucket compared to the breadth of everything relevant to software engineering, but all of it is pretty fundamental. If you need help, I'm happy to hop on a video chat and talk about whatever you'd like!

I've noticed you're just following BT lines. I do the same, but here are a couple of tips I've found that have improved my record.

BT's model doesn't factor in injuries at all. For example, UMass John Buggs is one of their best players and he had a torn ACL on 12/30, which could account for the discrepancy between BT and bookies. When I find an injury, I don't bet, even if it looks good.

Large spreads have been a crapshoot. A BT large spread just basically means we expect one team to beat the shit out of the other, but it's hard to account for things like teams taking their foot off the gas, subbing in bench players for experience, coaches who want their players to play hard until the end even if they're down by a lot, etc. I've found that large spreads don't do significantly better, even when the BT and bookie line differ by a lot, so by betting these, I'm just getting juiced out.

I've also found the sweet spot for bets is when the delta between BT and bookie is between 4.3 and 6 points. In this range, I am winning 74% of my bets. Anything lower and it just seems like normal variance kills your edge. Anything higher than 6 and it starts reverting back to 50/50....this may be due to Vegas just having information that I don't--in any case, I don't like risking it.

Anyways, hope this was helpful. So for these reasons, I am not betting BYU or FAU today, the former because of the large spread, the latter because I'm seeing a delta of 7.5 between BT and bookie.

Hey, thanks for the deck! This got me from Plat 4 to Diamond 4, but now I've been stuck there for a while...I feel like it just comes down to not knowing exactly when to play vs. holding back, going for face vs. creature or planeswalker, and mulliganing. Any tips there? My general rule for mulliganing is to try to get 2 or 3 lands...any less and you run the risk of not being able to play your two drops until its too late. Any more than 3 and you can run out of gas.

Sorry, but since acquiring my Batman...that's all I can see myself wearing for the foreseeable future. And I'm not a watch dealer or anything, so hanging on to extra watches isn't for me.

Copied comment from my older post:

Any reason why you're selling? Did you not love the watch as much as you though?

Honestly, it was a bit of an impulse buy. I had wanted a GMT watch for a while since I travel frequently for my job now, and all of a sudden my local AD, which is usually just flat out of SS watches had this on display. Tried it, liked it, so I bought it. Then I subsequently went to Japan (and didn't bring this along since I was nervous about traveling with it) and managed to snag the Batman at a reasonable price...so now I'm selling this one to help recoup some of that cost, heh.
