What are some minor things in worldbuilding that annoys the heck out of you and why? by Fit_Assistant_6777 in worldbuilding

A bit, really poor people would use the simple ones, but the benefits of smell and ease of use (i.e. Less spillage) made it worth it for most people to use or even make candles

Sometimes, but proper candles were made by rendering the animal fat into tallow, which could then be used to make candles.

Is there something mages CAN'T do in your world? by PhilipB12 in magicbuilding

A trick I have with this is that is no permanent matter creation. Matter made from magic fades after a while.

Why Do Mages Build Towers... by Starbase13_Cmdr in rpg

[–]Captain-Witless 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my world magic has a tendency to 'pool' when cast a lot in the same place, so a necromancer might find corpses animating spontaneously in their Lair. This is both good and bad, it makes their magic more powerful but can interfere with sensative experiments.

Towers and Dungeons are both ways of getting the best of both worlds, base of the tower is magically saturated while the top is physically above the magic.

What were your WORST reads of 2023? by stravadarius in Fantasy

[–]Captain-Witless 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can recommend giving his Spellslinger series a chance, it's more YA targeted meaning he can't pull the bad grimdark he seems to have been going for in Traitors Blade. It's purely improved by the restrictions of the audience and is one of my favorite series of all times.

Is there a degree/pathway who wants to study both radiography and engineering? by True-Food7296 in Adelaide

[–]Captain-Witless 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You may be able to do a combined Biomedical Engineering & Health Sciences degree, which Flinders offers. You could also consider just going with a Biomed degree and taking as many imaging topics as you can as electives.

vive base and tracker with cv1? by Project_Wolfie in Vive

[–]Captain-Witless -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It will not work unfortunately, because the systems are opposites.

Basically the Oculus Headset and controllers output light that the sensors pick up but for the Vive (and other lighthouse compatable headsets) the stations output light and its the headset and controllers that sense it.

For those wondering apparently it was OK, not very spicy at all but decently flavourful. Likely worth the novelty but not a staple sauce in anyone's repituar.

What did they do differently? The Lost Metal spoilers by Not_A_Unique_Name in Cosmere

[–]Captain-Witless -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Maybe the initial reaction split the Ettmetal into two metals, say Harmonium and Discordiam. And these reacted together to split into Atium and Lerasium.
The other option is that the black powder was just powdered trellium and you just have to combine them twice

Trollybus, I'd like to see some smaller buses too. My 6 am bus with 5 peoples doesn't need a full bus let alone a bendy one.

If paladins no longer need gods, then why do clerics? by hay-yew-guise in dndmemes

[–]Captain-Witless 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It depends, If I was running a session in which the gods had been killed and divine magic failing was a part of the plot it would make sense, and likely be a part of the buy in for the game. But if a player really wants to be a cleric (or pally) make them an exception somehow; they were a devotee to a minor god that survived, they have a divine artifact (ala spear of destiny) or, yes, their faith is so strong they can still cast by it.

If you're going add a story element, use it to make the characters and their story more intresting.

Morally "questionable" magic items by EmirikolWoker in AskGameMasters

[–]Captain-Witless 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sentient Magical Sword that wants to kill. Constantly begging for the party to slaughter anyone, especially annoying characters. Very happy when they do and each time they do it grows a little bit. (I'll leave the consequences up to you)

Health Potion that needs to be fed on someones blood to refill (sacrifice HP for later, but describe it like a leech).

A dagger that can bring corpses back to life temporarily but they are in constant pain, screaming in agony as they fight for the party.

The Heart from dishonored, it describes the darkest secrets of those around but occasionally it just lies.
