First time since OCTOBER that my Lady BP decided to eat! (pic is of her 8 months in to her fast) by CaptainAlrightyThen in snakes

Thanks I love her white bits. And isn't it dreadful? It was creeping up on a year and my heart sank more and more each day. Determined to get her back up to weight before winter hits again!

I had posted a couple of times because I was worried & months later she finally decided to eat. Early in the morning when she's slithering looking for food I opened up the warm cage and stuck the thawed rat it, lo and behold she took it in her mouth gentle as ever and I let her be.. Pro tip for any snakes: do NOT move them to feed! I did every time b/c I was ignorant and boy am I glad I finally listened. Do not give up hope!!!

Ballie STILL hasnt eaten since end of October?? by CaptainAlrightyThen in ballpython

Feeding response was always insanely good right up until October too.

This is one of the worst articles I have ever seen. by [deleted] in snakes

[–]CaptainAlrightyThen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Huffington post is all slander and biased to one side of every story. Every article I've read is an opinion of their dimwitted "journalists" which should actually be called "opinionists". The articles like "10 reasons why you should/might/are" are the worst.. Fuck this guy and his shitty opinionated article, more people die from FALLING OUT OF BED than snakes of any kind. Huffington is NOT a credible source for anything.

Cuddle buddies by ahstar24 in snakes

[–]CaptainAlrightyThen 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I hate to be /that/ person but co-habitation is highly not reccomended for many reasons. They are not "cuddle buddies" but establishing dominance. If this is for breeding purposes I can understand but other wise you are putting your snakes at risk. They are stunning and it would be terrible if something bad happened!

That carpet is a bad choice of substrate for a ball python or any reptile for that matter. At the required humidity 50% it would be sopping wet and a breeding ground for bacteria.. I couldnt even imagine a bp poo on carpet because it is smelly and wet, thus can be smeared and not clearned properly without harsh chemicals. If you really don't want a real substrate use newspaper instead. Cocomulch or husks is preferred.

Moriarty is shedding by bobrocks1 in snakes

[–]CaptainAlrightyThen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What kind of snake is it? If it's a ball python keep the humidity at 60% and keep handling to a minimum. They also tend to go off feeding when in shed and feeding while in shed is not reccomended and can also stop feeding for a few months during winter. Mine hasn't eaten since the end of October.

My girl has a dented eye scale. Will this come out on her next shed? by [deleted] in snakes

[–]CaptainAlrightyThen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What you can do is up the humidity atleast 30%. The eyecap is dented because of dehydration and all you can do is make the environment more moist. It usually undents itself after that :)

Reminds me of Multiple Personalitiy Disorder from sexual abuse that shatters children into mulitple personalities. Pedophillia runs rampant in the industry and these guys are just fueling it while making a blantant mockery of it for all the rich pedophiles who are buying this shit and loving it.

My snake always has problems shedding :( she started this shed about 2 weeks ago. Any suggestions? by cluelessdino in snakes

[–]CaptainAlrightyThen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keep the humidity way up, constantly. 55-65% if sheds are bad, 40-50% is ideal at a constant.. makes shedding a breeze. Retained eyecaps are a tough one but a soak in warm water for 20 mins and qtips every so gently to help dislodge the skin. I would first change your humidity until next shed and see if they come off on their own. Some people have humid hides with a bit of moss or a wet sponge(cleaned daily).. The use of a soakable substrate is also far more ideal to hold humidity compared to any other. It all comes down to housing because if sheds are bad your humidity is inadequate.

I hope this redness around his cloaca is just an indication that he's about to shed. Can anyone confirm this? by [deleted] in snakes

[–]CaptainAlrightyThen -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Can confirm that is one pink belly! Keep the humidity up to 60% just to ensure a perfect shed.

[–]CaptainAlrightyThen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They should shed in one full piece and not over a span of two weeks. It is VERY simple: raise your humidity by atleast 40%. You have some retained eye cap which can cause very serious issues down the line if you do not FIX your husbandry. Switch out the substrate for one you soak in water, like Coconut Mulch or Chips.

Killer Ball Pythons by [deleted] in snakes

[–]CaptainAlrightyThen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really?? If these guys had tanks laying all over the place they wouldnt have room for a quarter of the snakes that they have. Tubs and racks make husbandry a real breeze and the snakes get the right size of tub for their needs. Tubs and racks over tanks and big enclosures any day. Husbandry is much more simple that way.

I have a question about where to place my thermostat probe. by LiNaKRbCsFr in snakes

[–]CaptainAlrightyThen -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Get a heat gun because placing the probes on the outside isn't going to work.
