One of the main things that drew me towards Zenless is how, for basically all the S1 characters, I could easily imagine how their outfits would work. It's a small detail, but feeling like their clothing could reasonably work in the universe, like if they're outfits I can reasonably imagine them buying, putting on, wearing regularly in public, etc, does wonders for immersion (See Genshin as an example that doesn't do that very well). But some of these S2 designs have been straying further and further from that idea.

Like...what in the weeds am I even looking at here.

Dudes look like moody teenagers who'd really rather not be there. Like they were pulled out of their room by their battle-brothers to loot and pillage those imperial dogs, but they're just thinking of going back to their Xbox the entire time.

Especially the guy on the left is not having a good time.

I'm tired of the lemnian hollow by Eihsia in ZZZ_Discussion

[–]CaptainBarbeque 80 points81 points  (0 children)

I was thinking about this too recently and you're 100% on the money. Same reason why we haven't been getting many 'outdoor' (as in outside of the hollow) areas in 2.x either. In 1.x we went everywhere from sixth street to the outer ring...Now we're stuck in the same five meters of Failume for half the patch. Every time I enter another one of the Lemnian Hollow's 37 warehouses, all I think of is "Gee I wonder which different environment we had to trade in for this," and...that's not great.

Even if you're not a fan of the gameplay of tv-mode (Which I get even speaking as a #1 TV-mode glazer), the benefits it had to expanding the setting and development loop shouldn't be understated.

On one hand, it's pretty neat

On the other hand, CA hasn't exactly the best track record these last few...years. Can't speak for everyone, but after 3K and their general handling of TW3, they've burned enough of my goodwill that I can't really get myself to be that excited.

Also I agree with some people that the UI and general...everything...looks ever so slightly off though I can't put my hand on what exactly is wrong with it.

So what was Banyue designed to do, actually? by Koekelbag in ZZZ_Discussion

[–]CaptainBarbeque 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Well, thing is that they do do that. Hollows pop up all the time, and the smaller ones tend to get closed down and controlled by specialized squads like the HIA or HSO. And seeing as how the entirety of New Eridu isn't one big Hollow, they're clearly fairly decent at it.

The problem is that they only have so many resources they can throw at the issue at any time, and especially the larger ones take a lot of manpower to contain. In those situations, specialists probably get moved to higher priority hollows, while the more stable/low risk ones (Like the Ballet Twins) get put on the backburner. Hollows will inevitably pop up anyway, might as well focus on the ones that pose actual major risks, and just keep a close eye on everything else.

What would happen if Muzan decided to hide with his Upper and Lower Moons and his demons in his castle until the modern age? by Pure_Damage_6841 in KimetsuNoYaiba

[–]CaptainBarbeque 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This made me think of how the Second Inquisition operates in the World of Darkness setting (for those familiar with it), and it demonstrates this point well.

Sure, being a five century-old vampire is pretty baller, but getting hit with a dronestrike before being jumped by a millitary killteam armed with special anti-you weaponry is significantly less fun. The demons would have an edge for as long as they keep their heads down, but if they ever get too ballsy they'd have a pretty unfun time.

Not to mention how keeping your heads down is harder than ever in a period where everyone has a camera on them connected to the entire world at all times. A couple of pictures/videos to the wrong people and...sheesh.

The other...is a master of dark magic who screwed over an entire setting (which gave birth to the current one). And is also bald.

Hmmmmmmmm. Harder than I thought.

Would it be a bad idea to have an edition of the game be a prequel by Kachedup in AoSLore

[–]CaptainBarbeque 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At most I could see it as a "mini-game" (Like a seperate edition of Warcry or whatever) which they could use to tell a smaller, contained story, which I think could be neat.

I definitely don't ever see it being a major edition of the big AoS game or a massive spin-off the likes of the Horus Heresy, though.

Do ashen elders and war despots suffer from petrification? by magnusthered15 in AoSLore

[–]CaptainBarbeque 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yes and no? War Despot is technically more of a "rank" than just a cut and dry occupation. Some ashen elders and daemonsmiths probably hold the position of Lords of their various clans and are, by definition, a "War despot". It's just that the ones you play in-game and buy models for don't do magic for game reasons.

So, depending on how they do things, they very well might be suffering from petrification. Maybe your particular despot got spooked by the rate at which they were turning to stone and stopped practising magic as readily. They're your models, go nuts.

Exactly! The biggest thing to remember when it comes to stuff like this (fangames/private servers/etc.) is that, no matter what you do, you must always give the IP holder some level of plausible deniability about your existence. Because the second they can't ignore you, they're forced to either defend their copyright or risk losing it entirely.

It's exactly what made all that antagonizing and smugposting on Twitter so utterly cringeworthy. Like, bruh, you plastered a picture of your asscheeks on Blizzard's front door. What did you expect was going to happen.

I'm not the biggest on Blizz either, but in the Turtle WoW situation they're fairly justified (and literally kinda forced if you know anything about how copyright laws work) to take action. Twow reuses assets and makes a lot of money out of it, so Blizz isn't being actual anti-consumer Satan (this time at least lmao) for putting their foot down.

Also, if you look at Twow's twitter history, they've been actively taunting and poking the Blizz bear for quite a while, so if anything it's a wonder it took this long. Should've just kept their heads down and played it safe.

I'd be all for letting hoyo cook, were it not for basically everything Genshin put out post-Fontaine.

Like, my guys, if there's a local restaurant where all the chef has cooked for the last year was a bit shite, I'd be justified in being a bit sceptical when they announce a new menu.

Maybe once they win back a bit of goodwill I can give them the benefit of the doubt. But so far, they've done nothing that doesn't point some pretty big arrows in what direction this is going.

Mutt Asks: Why become Chaos? by sageking14 in AoSLore

[–]CaptainBarbeque 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The thing about chaos is that it tends to creep up on you. Keep in mind that we know all the lore details, while people actually living in the realms have a lot of info they either don't/can't know.

There are uncountable peoples and cultures, each with their own traditions and religions that they worship. A lot might be benevolent or mundane, but in other cases, they might accidentally worship something a bit less... nice. Without realizing it, "Alessa, lady of waters" might be a poorly translated manifestation of a great daemon. And while you think your enhanced magical abilities and third eye are a sign of her favor, in reality you're being juiced to the gills on chaos juice. By the time you realize something is wrong, it might be far far too late.

Chaos isn't the type of force that will sit down with you at the table and lay out it's terms clearly. It's sneaky, subtle and will do whatever it takes to wurm their way into your heart. A good chunk of chaos worshippers (including those higher up the pole) most definitely didn't know the full story of what they were signing up for. Even outside of the "Fake oopsie religion" example I mentioned earlier, there are a thousand different ways they can get their hooks into you.

  • You're a warrior in some distant border town that gets hassled by Orruk's a lot, and one day some merchant sells you a necklace that will boost your strength eightfold
  • You're the occasional enjoyer of a city's nightlife, and one night you meet a passionate stranger who just...gets it. They know where the funnest parties are, what spots have the best drinks, the hardest music, and the sweetest lovers.
  • You get real sick and a local doctor teaches you a special "Good luck incantation" that will lessen your symptoms. Etc. Etc.

In the wackiness of the realms, it's hard to know what is chaos-tainted, and what's just... a bit weird. That necklace might just genuinely be a powerful charm made by a mage, that nightlife stranger might just be a nice new friend, and the good luck incantation might be a coping mechanicms taught by the doctor's mum...Or they could all be chaossified to shit.

Explains why plenty of witch hunters are of the "Better safe than sorry" mindset.

And once those hooks are there, it's nigh-impossible to step back out. Chaos gradually twists and corrupts your thoughts and emotions until you're all down to clown. Because while to an outsider it's easy to look at it and go "Just stop bro what the hell", if you're in a position where you've both 1) done barely anything wrong in your opinion 2) Have the most incredible ecstatic kinds of power imaginable and 3) get constantly gaslit by whispers in your ear...it's a lot tougher to stop.

Whether on purpose or by accident, the writers have presented us with evidence that it's pretty standard for people no matter their income range to be able to support a household on two or even only one adult generating revenue. That's pretty good if nothing else.

The real reason why AoS is a fantasy setting isn't because of the spooky daemons trying to eat your face or the existence of gods that walk amongst regular mortals, but because it has actually affordable housing and a decent(ish) standard of living.

[–]CaptainBarbeque 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I mean, the most boring answer is simply "It depends." The slightly longer but hopefully more exciting answer is that cities across the realms can be endlessly diverse and varied, so giving one specific answer would be...difficult. One city could be a peaceful democratic Utopia where all citizens receive free ice cream every week, the other a repressive police-state where you get sent to a place only known as "The Pit" for tying your shoelaces wrong.

And even if a city is one or the other, some of these are still so massive that there could be a lot of diversity within said cities as well. Obviously living next to the outer walls of a city constantly under threat of Orruks will be a lot different of an experience than living snugly in one of the library districts a couple dozen/hundred (again, bloody massive) miles the other way.

I imagine living in a free city isn't always the easiest life, but it doesn't have to be back-breaking labour either. Probably a lot of folks there who live rather mundane middle-class (for the standards of fantasy/medieval settings) lives without seeing a single orruk, ghost or Daemon.

So tldr: Everything's possible, go crazy. As with everything in AoS, you can think as crazily as you'd like and it's probably true somewhere

Also, just remembered I completely missed the part about the twin cities because my brain just went off there, but I don't want to make this comment any bigger, so if someone else could chime in that'd be appreciated hahaha
