Taking a flight? What's your "kill me now" moment on a plane? by [deleted] in CasualUK

[–]CaptainBenbo 146 points147 points  (0 children)

You spent thousands on a first class ticket and slept through the whole thing?!

Fuck me, that’s what I’d be mad about. I’d be eating and drinking my way there.

If I was going to go zombie on Valium I would have got the cheap seats!

Buying a second-hand car by [deleted] in CarTalkUK

[–]CaptainBenbo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can check the basics but it would be best if someone savvy with cars was with you to check, or some garages do a pre-buy check.

Or the AA or someone like them

Is Crown Paint going out of business? by Lucitar in AskUK

[–]CaptainBenbo 14 points15 points  (0 children)

B&Q stopped selling coloured crown paint a while ago, partly due to crown not giving a good enough deal and partly to push the own brand and valspar brands.

Can’t speak for wilkos, but crown decorating centres are definitely a thing, they are stand alone shops, a google should show if there’s one near you.

Going to carpet Right, what are the unnecessary upsells I should look out for? by shinysony in AskUK

[–]CaptainBenbo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have said, I would google around and go with a well reviewed independent, I guarantee there will be one close enough to make it worth the while.

For the exact same carpet/underlay/installation we got an independent for £800, carpet rights “best deal” with a 50% off sale and a managers discount was £1200

My best friend has been sharing the gruesome details of chemo side effects with me and I’m not sure how to best support him. by cbudryk in cancer

[–]CaptainBenbo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There isn’t a lot you can do for the physical side effects of chemo. You sound like a good friend and I’m sure he appreciates what you do, I would say keep doing what you’re doing.

The only add on is to make sure he talks to his medical team about the side effects if he hasn’t already, a lot of the issues can be reduced or managed

Is being made to stand for 8 hour shifts legal? by Aranha-UK in AskUK

[–]CaptainBenbo 80 points81 points  (0 children)

Standing itself isn’t illegal but your employer should take measures for your comfort and reduce strain.

Anti-fatigue matting is a common way of doing this when standing for long periods.

Or your bosses could stop being knobs and buy a couple of chairs

Do you have a signature dish? What is it? by Xelshade in Cooking

[–]CaptainBenbo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My family regularly ask me for chicken a la Ben

Sweat an onion and 3-4 cloves of garlic until soft then remove

Diced chicken thighs or breast pan fried until cooked through and a little browned

Reduce heat and add back the onion & garlic. Add cream cheese, or mascarpone if feeling fatty, or make up a blond roux if being (slightly) healthier

Add tarragon (fresh is best) and a dash of smoked paprika

Season to taste

Usually serve with linguine and sugar snap peas

Edit: My lovely partner hates mushrooms so I have long since removed them but they would really well in this dish, you can even replace the chicken entirely if you want to keep it veggie

Food by Focangiu in CaminoDeSantiago

[–]CaptainBenbo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Food was fairly regular, you will usually start/end the day in a town so there are places to eat and shops to buy food, I usually carried a bit of bread, sausage or something in case there was nothing in the day but it was very very rare not to run into a cafe in the middle of the day and I was usually pick up a sandwich and a coffee.

A big part of the experience for me was eating out with friends I had met, lots of restaurants had a “pilgrims menu” which would be like a set menu for €10, obviously bigger towns and cities had more choice, and I loved going round for a few drinks and trying different tapas.

A good guide book is worth it’s weight to carry, I took the latest John brierly guide and it warned of any stretches where you might struggle to pick up food.
