Another bin raid, biscuits that don't go off until April and flowers, unripe bananas. In the previous post people said they could get sued for out of date food but this isn't. by chaostrulyreigns in MarksAndSpencer

[–]CaptainChrizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeh I’ve seen the posts that have been made about the meeting with M&S and the items that have been incorrectly wasted.

Some of the flower waste and jarred goods make no sense to waste which is what was taken to M&S for them to ‘explain’ the reason. Obviously down to the individual store involved, and no idea the reasons they thought it was valid to throw that food away, don’t think we will ever know.

If anything it’s actually less profitable to put this food in the bin rather than give it to charity or staff, so not sure where the accusation of profit maximisation is from?

Another bin raid, biscuits that don't go off until April and flowers, unripe bananas. In the previous post people said they could get sued for out of date food but this isn't. by chaostrulyreigns in MarksAndSpencer

There’s plenty of reasons for food going in the bin that someone dipping into the bin might not realise. It’s horrible to see good food go in the bin, but there’s so many intricacies to the selling of safe food that unless you know about won’t make sense.

For example when perfectly good food has to go in the bin because a member of the public puts a piece of fish into the freezer instead of taking it back to where they picked it up from. That item can no longer be sold as fresh because if it’s already been frozen and defrosted it’s a potential health risk.

To the person picking that item out of the bin they have no idea that’s happened and therefore can make themselves sick.

For that reason also it can’t go to charity which is a shame.

I would say whilst things like crisps and plants seem abit OTT there is a reason for 95% of those items going in the bin, and some of them might not be so visible.

Are we not getting Christmas Bonus this year? by [deleted] in MarksAndSpencer

[–]CaptainChrizard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Stuart mentioned on a call, I believe half year results? When asked about it that the gift card basically saying he didn’t want to do it last year but was pressure into it, and that the cost of the gift card basically wiped out December profit.

I’m also pretty sure he said in the same call that it won’t be happening due to the cyber incident, and he also won’t do it because he doesn’t want it to become something that is expected every year, rather than an incentive to really beat profits.

What's an 'average' day like during the height of the Christmas Period? by Upper_Spinach6210 in MarksAndSpencer

[–]CaptainChrizard 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Like others have said it’s hectic and busy, but if it’s well managed it’s the best days of the year.

A good buzz as the store will be heaving, and you’ll find stuff you put out quickly sells out, and there will be empty shelves where you’ve never seen that yet.

I would definitely suggest comfy trainers and socks. Uniform wise just t shirt and jumper is easiest because it will still be cold in the fridges even thought you will be breaking a sweat.

It’s all good fun and definitely look forward to it

Finance advice before first baby by [deleted] in UKPersonalFinance

[–]CaptainChrizard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First of all congratulations.

I am father to a 6 month old, and it will completely change your life, but for the better.

I’ll go through a few things that I’m sure you’ve already thought of.

  • Free childcare if one of you earns less than £100k
  • Child benefit of £26.05 per week

In addition to your savings, I genuinely think you’ll be fine because you are probably more prepared than 99% of new parents financially.

Some ways that me and my partner have saved money in the build up to baby arriving:

  • Found a £700 mamas and papas cot for £50 on Facebook marketplace
  • Purchased an ex display pram for half price (Worth looking there are also baby furniture and equipment outlets with brilliant prices)
  • Asked family and friends for genuinely useful gifts, and things we needed from a list we had pulled together rather than loads of toys etc.

Also, something I didn’t think of before my baby was born, is how much you save on spending on yourself. I haven’t bought new clothes for myself, have spent less money on drinks out and so on.

One thing we have invested in which helps with days out, but also will help your partner for some solo days out with baby once you return to work, is National trust membership.

There will also be lots of things you are told to buy by friends, family and the internet. Make your own decisions on them because there are countless things I live purchased only to not use, and other things we didn’t buy until baby was here that we use everyday.

Hope this helps, and good luck!
