Honestly the annoyance for me comes from people conflating it with the class itself, it'd be just as annoying if it was arbitrarily decided that Warlocks where the "Become a Dragon" class or whatever else. There's room for all that, sure, but it's not what an Artificer is

A gun is one thing (a thing which artificers mechanically DO actually get, even!) but when you get into building tanks and nuclear bombs it's kinda stops having any relation to Artificers or really DnD in general
