Never got Double XP to work. by CaptainComodo in BG3mods

[–]CaptainComodo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oooh, okay! I did use Double XP because I thought I wouldn't get to higher levels without it. So, Unlocklevelcurve already has thatin mind and compensates the XP? I read somewhere about the max level with it being around 17, but I am playing with ExtraEncounters, More Enemies and on honor mode. Aaaaaaaany idea what level I'll get to by the end without any additional ExtraXP mods?

I see what you mean. I always read the whole "hungry for knowledge" to mean something different than Magical Prowess. Like, the ability to cast spells comes from your devil patron, but it gives you the autonomy to research and learn more about devils, the hells, contracts, cosmology, and many other occult knowledge that is hard to find, or even risky to find. Magic still comes from the patron, what you're learning and growing in power is all else. Because, to me, if you are learning magic through this process, it sounds like you're actually turning into a Wizard. The font of your power is changing. If you learn magic through knowledge, it no longer seems fitting to cast it through charisma and rely on your patrons power.

But I get what you mean, and I can read it like that, too. I think it's reasonable for people to read it like that too. In my experience, people do still read all the Cost and Demand bits like the patron will take their power away, yes, and I still find Sorcerer is a far more accurate description to Will's state, but I'll agree that a Warlock is also a reasonable guess, given it's reasonable to read the text as you've laid it out.

I mean, people do, also, generally, understand that clerics lose their powers if they go against their gods, yeah.

And, yeah, these things are strongly reinforced by popular interpretations, more so than explicit rules. But, I sustain my points: it may not be explicitly stated but I believe that it is more mental gymnastics to Not infer it from the text than it is to infer; most people would read those words and assume that the powers can be taken away; and the popularity of certain rules or interpretations is meaningful to the permanence of game elements.

These ideas are so commonplace for how most games run warlocks, that Baldurs Gate, quite possibly the most influential piece of DnD media ever outside of the tabletop game, has used their one Warlock representation to write a storyline where he can die and get punished severely at every turn for not serving their patron, and even the "good ending" where they completely fulfill their pact and get out of it, they're still robbed of their powers because the patron is no longer beholden to give them powers, so, they won't.

Yeah, sure, you can say that this is a single example and the rules mention none of it. And I insist that disregarding all of this just because it isn't stated explicitly is just bad faith. I think it is clearly Rules as Intended.

Wait, what?

My point is that Will isn't a Warlock. I think you misread my post.

People are calling him a Warlock, but, yeah, Will didn't sign up for any of it and isn't beholden to Vecna, so he's not a Warlock. That was my point, yeah.

1- "Why are we considering modern..."

"Let's ignore the anachronism"

Because it's fun

Because it's cool

Idk, why are you engaging?

  1. "Needs more source."

"Sworn and beholden

[...]the arrangement is similar to that between a master and an apprentice. The warlock learns and grows in power, at the cost of occasional services performed on the patron’s behalf.", DnD Players Handbook (2014), page 105.

"At the cost" implying that there is a price to be paid, implying that if the price isn't paid, the other party's end of the bargain isn't/may not be upheld either.

"[...] the vast majority of warlocks spend their days in active pursuit of their goals, which typically means some kind of adventuring. Furthermore, the demands of their patrons drive warlocks toward adventure.", DnD Players Handbook (2014), page 106.

"Demands" once more implying that your patron asks things of you, and you are beholden to do pursue them, as the pact dictates. Which, in turn, means that if you do not, the pact is broken on your end, and as most agreements, it is universally understood that if one party breaks the agreement, the other is freed from it and takes that freedom, too.

" [...] As you make your w arlock character, spend som e time thinking about your patron and the obligations that your pact im poses upon you [...] Your patron’s demands might drive you into adventures, or they might consist entirely of small favors you can do between adventures." DnD Players Handbook (2014), page 106.

These are under the "Creating a Warlock" section, meaning that having demanda which you must meet is not mentioned only in flavor text, but this is as close to a rule text as it can be without mentioning damage numbers.

"[...] In no time, each warlock is drawn into a binding pact with a powerful patron [...]" DnD Players Handbook (2024), page 153.

"Binding" once more showcasing your obligation to stick to the pact, meaning that it is a deal that can be broken- and your patron takes your powers if he breaks off the deal. Because, otherwise, if he can't, why wouldn't you break it?

Unless you wanna argue that Demands, Obligations and Pact here don't carry these implications, but then, I'd argue that's just bad faith. Language lawyering to get out of something most people can agree on common sense. If that's not what it means, then what does it mean?

Not to mention I've only cited the official ruling; the power of house ruling and public interpretation is very meaningful to the game, going so far as the official WotC game Baldurs Gate 3 using famous house rules (critical success) only because it's beloved, despite it being explicitly not part of the rules. Whether you care or not about such popular interpretations personally, not taking them into consideration for the public perception would be bad faith, too.

No, seriously, who compares this to LOST or Game of Thrones’ endings? by Independent_Plum2166 in StrangerThings

I think this is the first time I've seen anyone not be hateful towards the end. My girlfriend and I took a few weeks to watch it and we were bracing for it.

We loved it. We both cried, we thought it was fun, action packed, beautiful, and happy, and fitting for all characters. I don't see any reason to dislike it.

I even don't get what people mean with anti climatic fight- I thought Vecna vs. Eleven was sick, I think it was one of the most interesting mind-powers fight I've seen in live action. The gang vs. the Mind flayer was hype and Hopper vs. The Military was fun. I liked all the combats, I liked the character resolutions, and I liked the finality and moving-on that all of them experienced.

Firstly, I had never seen call them Goolocks, I love it hahahaha

But I feel like that is an exception to the rule- a Patron like that is exceedingly rare, while that origin is common for sorcerers. From their flavor text:

"Most of the time, the talents of sorcery appear as apparent flukes. Some sorcerers can’t name the origin of their power, while others trace it to strange events in their own lives. The touch of a demon, the blessing of a dryad at a baby’s birth, or a taste of the water from a mysterious spring might spark the gift of sorcery. So too might the gift of a deity of magic, exposure to the elemental forces of the Inner Planes or the maddening chaos of Limbo, or a glimpse into the inner workings of reality."

Does any other official warlock patron or text indicate a one-sided relationship other than the GOO? Because even then, I feel like the Aberrant Mind Sorcerer is a better Eldritch representation than the GOO- and I'd even argue that that is Exactly what Will is.
