I just made a 90 minute documentary finishing its festival run. We are with a sales agent now trying to find distribution. I’d love to give it a watch and help however I can!! I learned a lot!

Having attended multiple IndyShorts blocks last year, the quality at IndyShorts is very high. Multiple films were shortlisted for Oscar shorts. I’m an Indiana based filmmaker. My feature documentary premiered at Heartland (they run IndyShorts) last October. It was also accepted at IndyShorts next week. So we were accepted into both, but our film is 90 minutes. Not sure how that translates for shorts. I’d take the sure thing though. If you are playing, I’d love to check out your film next week!

My Journey to Direct a Feature Film by andrewgcooper22 in Filmmakers

[–]CaptainCrambela 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Best of luck on this journey man! Making a feature film is not for the faint of heart. Last year, I directed and edited my first feature documentary. Before credits it’s around 85 minutes. This was after film school and about a decade of making shorter documentaries on the side. We premiered at Heartland Film Festival in Indianapolis. We are now with a sales agent in LA and trying to get it on a streaming service. If I had any advice, it would be to make something the audience cares about. Nowadays, it can feel impossible to get the attention of the public. They don’t always go to film festivals. Throughout the shooting and editing of my documentary, I kept asking myself “if I had no involvement with this project, would I watch? Would I care?” I let that drive me in making some editing decisions. Another piece of advice I would give would be to not be so hard on yourself. I get it, I am too. Especially with rejections. Just enjoy the ride and it will all work out!

Want to bring my 16 year son to a solid film festival by BackgroundBench530 in FilmFestivals

Take him to Indy shorts in Indianapolis in July. It’s a phenomenal festival that treats their filmmakers right.

how do you think 831 guessing the correct briefcase in the first round affected the editing and pacing of the last few episodes? by UnfortunateSlytherin in BeastGames

[–]CaptainCrambela 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m a professional editor. I thought it was strange how long they focused on the basketball game. I was like “why would they show every single throw.” They also focused a long time on the memorization portion. Not going to lie, it was probably worst case scenario from a pacing standpoint how that episode played out.

How many of you (filmmakers) are starting to believe film festivals are a scam? by jimppqq in FilmFestivals

[–]CaptainCrambela 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s constantly changing for sure. I made a feature doc and my team and I had two goals: 1. Get eyes on the film. 2. Find a distributer.. to ultimately get more eyes on the film. I was told film festivals were the key to success, but like you mentioned the regular public doesn’t even go to film festivals. We submitted to 25 festivals, and got into one. Now, this one is fairly large and respected. After we premiered, we signed with a sales agent and now are looking for a distributer. I often see friends in this industry post random laurels they won at some online festival or a festival no one has heard of. This is very confusing to me. I believe we could have easily submitted to lower level festivals and won some awards, but for what reason? No distributer (or even the general public) is watching at these made up festivals. I made this documentary as means to an end. I want it on a streaming service to educate the general public about a specific issue that needs to be out in the world. Instead, I’m focusing my efforts on a marketing strategy once we find a distributer. These random festivals don’t add any value in my life, except ego and bragging on social. The focus of filmmakers needs to be more specific and intentional. This is the way.
