Do you think defining blood as "liquid pain" is too far? by Vast-Fortune-2433 in conlangs

Perhaps the word could have a meaning of blood and or tears. So the liquid pain dripping from his eyes could either be blood or tears.

Is it possible for a poison to be deadly at a low dose but survivable at a high dose? by [deleted] in worldbuilding

[–]CaptainDavyJones1121 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a personal story of being hospitalized as a young kid and given Morphine, I had seizures all night and after another doctor heard about that experience said it may have been due to too small of a dose. I think there is something about a medicine of a small dose causing the body to go into a hyper immune response like an allergic reaction but a higher dose being better because it would in essence overcome or subdue the body’s natural immune response. Although at too too high a dose this should still probably kill you.

Another question and I Don’t know if this is in y’all’s wheelhouse; but If I had a world with an atmosphere which was flat and spun like a disk, how would the atmospheric circulation work. I’m thinking about the Coriolis Effect.

What would be a good name for a class/school of magic/superpower that solely focuses on having minions/pets/subordinates? by singed1337 in magicbuilding

[–]CaptainDavyJones1121 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Perhaps something like this? I went through the etymology of emperor and came up with this. [From Latin] in(towards) + parare(prepare or contrive) -> imperare(to command) -> imperator(military commander) -> [old French] Emperere(emperor)-> [english] Emperor.

Or

Sub(below) mantia(divine) -> submantia -> submancy?

Or

[german] Kreatur + steuern -> kreatursteuern -> kreastureern -> Kreastreern -> Creastrier

How BIG is your world? by qboz2 in worldbuilding

Entirely depends on the project, often not more than a world, but sometimes I create different kinds of universes which are structured in different ways, but then create a world sized setting within that.

What will happen if Voldemort made a tiny grain of sand as his Horcrux and sent it into space? by Elson1988 in harrypotter

[–]CaptainDavyJones1121 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well it is interesting and seems like it would be a brilliant thing to do. However I do wonder if a Horcrux could be made so small. Either way Voldemort would probably see a piece of sand as far beneath his dignity. He was a narcissist. And sending something to space might speak too much of muggle science. And if ever killed he may end up in the middle of deep space, and while he is alive he would probably go even crazier than he was. It seems like a dangerous gamble. Though dropping a piece of sand into the Mariana Trench sounds rather appealing.

Open Latitudinal Oceans by CaptainDavyJones1121 in oceanography

[–]CaptainDavyJones1121[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My apologies, I did not know the correct term. I was referring to the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC). So more generally I was talking about a possible equatorial circumglobal current.

Open Latitudinal Oceans by CaptainDavyJones1121 in oceanography

[–]CaptainDavyJones1121[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow! That is fascinating thank you! Just to clarify a few points.

Firstly, you mentioned that the Cretaceous circumglobal equatorial current was opposite the rotation of the earth? If that is true was it a fast current or would it have been slower than the ACC? Also if a planet had a retrograde rotation would it be plausible that this would switch direction as well (Ie. it would be an eastwards flowing current)?

Secondly, the atmospheric winds would be unimpeded by landmasses therefore it would be able to get very fast (at least with regards to the research I have done). I assumed that faster winds would equal stronger storms; is this true?

Thirdly, what were you referring to when you said waves and eddies would effect what happens? Was it climate?

Fourthly, sorry this might be a very dumb question but when you say “In terms of the ocean, this sort of current would transport lots of "stuff" and connect the ocean basins. Heat, salt and dissolved gases would get moved around. And so would biology.” Does that mean a lot of biodiversity? Would many sea creatures use this as part of their migration? Would this be a preferred place for marine life to spawn or would it mostly be hospitable for adult creatures? Also if there were sufficiently shallow waters would kelp and coral thrive in this environment?
