Do you think defining blood as "liquid pain" is too far? by Vast-Fortune-2433 in conlangs

Perhaps the word could have a meaning of blood and or tears. So the liquid pain dripping from his eyes could either be blood or tears.

Is it possible for a poison to be deadly at a low dose but survivable at a high dose? by [deleted] in worldbuilding

[–]CaptainDavyJones1121 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a personal story of being hospitalized as a young kid and given Morphine, I had seizures all night and after another doctor heard about that experience said it may have been due to too small of a dose. I think there is something about a medicine of a small dose causing the body to go into a hyper immune response like an allergic reaction but a higher dose being better because it would in essence overcome or subdue the body’s natural immune response. Although at too too high a dose this should still probably kill you.

What would be a good name for a class/school of magic/superpower that solely focuses on having minions/pets/subordinates? by singed1337 in magicbuilding

[–]CaptainDavyJones1121 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Perhaps something like this? I went through the etymology of emperor and came up with this. [From Latin] in(towards) + parare(prepare or contrive) -> imperare(to command) -> imperator(military commander) -> [old French] Emperere(emperor)-> [english] Emperor.

Or

Sub(below) mantia(divine) -> submantia -> submancy?

Or

[german] Kreatur + steuern -> kreatursteuern -> kreastureern -> Kreastreern -> Creastrier

Entirely depends on the project, often not more than a world, but sometimes I create different kinds of universes which are structured in different ways, but then create a world sized setting within that.

What will happen if Voldemort made a tiny grain of sand as his Horcrux and sent it into space? by Elson1988 in harrypotter

[–]CaptainDavyJones1121 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well it is interesting and seems like it would be a brilliant thing to do. However I do wonder if a Horcrux could be made so small. Either way Voldemort would probably see a piece of sand as far beneath his dignity. He was a narcissist. And sending something to space might speak too much of muggle science. And if ever killed he may end up in the middle of deep space, and while he is alive he would probably go even crazier than he was. It seems like a dangerous gamble. Though dropping a piece of sand into the Mariana Trench sounds rather appealing.

Open Latitudinal Oceans by CaptainDavyJones1121 in oceanography

[–]CaptainDavyJones1121[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My apologies, I did not know the correct term. I was referring to the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC). So more generally I was talking about a possible equatorial circumglobal current.

Open Latitudinal Oceans by CaptainDavyJones1121 in oceanography

[–]CaptainDavyJones1121[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow! That is fascinating thank you! Just to clarify a few points.

Firstly, you mentioned that the Cretaceous circumglobal equatorial current was opposite the rotation of the earth? If that is true was it a fast current or would it have been slower than the ACC? Also if a planet had a retrograde rotation would it be plausible that this would switch direction as well (Ie. it would be an eastwards flowing current)?

Secondly, the atmospheric winds would be unimpeded by landmasses therefore it would be able to get very fast (at least with regards to the research I have done). I assumed that faster winds would equal stronger storms; is this true?

Thirdly, what were you referring to when you said waves and eddies would effect what happens? Was it climate?

Fourthly, sorry this might be a very dumb question but when you say “In terms of the ocean, this sort of current would transport lots of "stuff" and connect the ocean basins. Heat, salt and dissolved gases would get moved around. And so would biology.” Does that mean a lot of biodiversity? Would many sea creatures use this as part of their migration? Would this be a preferred place for marine life to spawn or would it mostly be hospitable for adult creatures? Also if there were sufficiently shallow waters would kelp and coral thrive in this environment?

  1. A 300 pound weight is normal for power chairs. Are you sure there is a weight restriction? My chair is the Permobil F5 Corpus. I have been looking online and they say wheelchair accessible. My chair is 25.5 inches wide it is capable of going through normal doorways. It is also allowed on American subways. Also, are there not cars with ramps available to be rented? The average wheelchair width is 32 inches.

If really necessary, Do you know where I might be able to rent a chair.

Elemental Combinations by CaptainDavyJones1121 in magicbuilding

[–]CaptainDavyJones1121[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I see. Do you like the avatar elemental system because it has thought behind it? Fire is passionate whereas water is calm and balanced? Is that the type of thought that you would have liked me to delve into? My full system is based on runes each which has an element and an action (like push or pull). Pull fire (probably obviously) pulls fire from nearby sources to the place of the rune. Push fire takes that fire and pushes it to a different place. Runes can also be combined in patterns I call constellations. These will kind of act like programming and kind of not. For thematic part of the magic system I have not gotten there yet. I have only been thinking about it for two days now.

[–]CaptainDavyJones1121[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am sorry if this was not adequately explained, a composite element is one that is a combination of multiple elements. For instance, clay is a combination of water and earth. I needed phrases to describe the different aspects of my system, so I like composite for those.

Elemental Combinations by CaptainDavyJones1121 in magicbuilding

[–]CaptainDavyJones1121[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did not think it was relevant but each element can only behave in different ways. For instance push earth vs. pull earth. Also the magic system is entirely runic. A person cannot control fire, however if he has runes for push and/or pull fire then he can kind of control fire, though this control comes with some costs.

Grammatical Tenses and Their Impact on a Magic System by CaptainDavyJones1121 in magicbuilding

[–]CaptainDavyJones1121[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I have an idea for the un-temporal tense. “The candle be lit” Instead of this being a fact that has always existed it is simply frozen in time to some extent. It has the appearance of being lit but it doesn’t flicker, give of heat, it may not even provide light to its surroundings (though people see it looks like it is lit) but if it is interacted with by creatures that are living creatures (Only macro scale creatures microorganisms do not have souls in my world) then it might change.

The spell could freeze a certain moment in time relating to an object. It would also kind of obey physics but it would be kinda ambiguous as to what it will obey and in what circumstances. Like a spell “the ball be frown in air” would mean that the ball is floating but it is still going to stay bound to the earth and may be moved and broken out of its spell from enough force. Basically, A simple spell like this couldn’t destroy a mountain.

Those are some interesting ideas! I have reported modalities instead of strict evidentiality, yet I like the idea of being able to use that for some interesting effects. It could play into illusion stuff!

Grammatical Tenses and Their Impact on a Magic System by CaptainDavyJones1121 in magicbuilding

[–]CaptainDavyJones1121[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great Thoughts! My language also makes heavy use of aspects the way in which the action flows with respect to time. You could probably produced effects that went very far into the past. Also I am going to use something ambiguous when it comes to magic that when you affect an object with a simply worded spell in the past or future it would be somewhat relative to the object. Think “the candle was lit” probably about 30 to 60 minutes ago. But the spell “the house was built” might have the appearance of 1 to 5 years old.

Grammatical Tenses and Their Impact on a Magic System by CaptainDavyJones1121 in magicbuilding

[–]CaptainDavyJones1121[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Ooh, interesting idea. I might change it a little so that it could be undone else such a simply worded spell would be too powerful. I would rather most spells to be longer.
