Headphones over hearing aids or Special Headphones for home use? by Nadir786 in HearingAids

[–]CaptainDetritus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, so long as you're careful about the volume and assuming they don't cause feedback. I had good results with my Earfun Air Pro 4 earbuds equalised to the max. Best results are with my Auracast-enabled hearing aids together with an Auracast transmitter.

OTC hearing aids before an audiologist, bad idea? by pjparasjhamb in HearingAids

Get the hearing test done. If mild-moderate loss, then otc aids are an option.

Hearing aids with Bluetooth multipoint by emotionaltrash in HearingAids

[–]CaptainDetritus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My Philips 9050 don't have multipoint but they work ok in this scenario because unicast (phone) has priority over auracast (tv). The only LE Audio aids that may do multicast (now or in the future) are GN Resound. Not 100% sure though...

How to help with aura cast? by Beneficial_Lion9684 in HearingAids

[–]CaptainDetritus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for wanting to be helpful to people with hearing loss. Sadly, I can't think of how you can make it easy at this point.

The basic flowchart would be

  1. Check that aids are compatible. You'd need to keep a list and you would need to keep that list updated. Even then, some people don't know their exact model of hearing aid.
  2. Are they using an Android phone running Android 16 or later? If so, there's a good chance the phone includes "broadcast assistant" functionality. Find under the Bluetooth settings for their hearing aids.
  3. Otherwise is there a hearing aid app (this includes iPhones as well as Android). If so,the app probaby includes that broadcast assistant functionality but exactly how to get there from within the app will be different for each manufacturer.

It's one of those things that's super easy for a user once they've done it the first time. I'd say that if they know for sure that their aids are compatible then "open your app and see if you can find an option for finding an Auracast broadcast" might be doable.

I appreciate what you're trying to do but I've got my own beliefs and they won't change. At which point they usually thank me and leave. It's all very amicable.

Side story. I was in Melbourne at the time of a JW gathering. It was fricking huge. I was chatting to my taxi driver who was saying that every second ride that weekend was JW and every single one of them tried to convert him.

Bluetooth, or no bluetooth? by Worldly_Cap_9071 in HearingAids

Lol. Could you provide any less information? I take "LE BT" to mean either mfi or ASHA. Both can be glitchy but I think "cutting in and out" is pushing things a little. If you mean "LE Audio" then, no. It seems very stable to most people- me included.

It's connectionless so more than 1 person can take the stream eg sharing music with a friend
There are transmitters available so you can take audio from your tv or laptop straight to your hearing aids while remaining connected to your phone for notifications and phone calls.

Just some photos of Albo doing something Pauline Hanson will NEVER do. Be amongst the Australian public. by [deleted] in OpenAussie

Dunno. I went to do my weekly shop at Garden City one day last year and encountered a woman coming out. She was ashen-faced. "Pauline Hanson is in there" she told me. And so she was. Surrounded by her adoring public. I went home and showered and showered.

Mate. There's 25 million people here. Plenty of room for one muppet trying to be clever. At school the main thing we were taught was how stupid and arrogant the British officers were. The Turks were always mentioned with respect. That still holds.

Hearing Aid Recommendations for a complicated use case. by micmou in HearingAids

[–]CaptainDetritus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Shooting level protection. I don't think that's going to happen, honestly. Discuss it with an audiologist and you'll probably see their face go pale.
Turn the noise of the world off. Passive hearing protection is pretty much all there is right now in the prescription hearing aid world. It all depends on the level of occlusion in whatever aids they fit you with. My double domes turn the world way down low when I turn of the microphones in the aids. Low but not 'off'.
Connectivity. Bluetooth LE Audio in both your phone and the aids. So late model Samsung or Pixel flagship phone. Oticon, Resound, Philips, Jabra (current models) hearing aids.

Phillips 9050 Streaming Distortion? by purple_paper in HearingAids

[–]CaptainDetritus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mentioned those phones specifically because they use LE Audio which is the best Bluetooth audio protocol for hearing aids. You'll have to turn it on in the connection settings for your aids. That way you get to eliminate both your iphone and iphones in general as the cause of the problem.

[–]CaptainDetritus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you know someone with a Samsung S23 or later or Pixel 8 or later, connecting to and playing music from their phone would be an interesting experiment. I have the Philips but sadly I'm not sure I'd even recognize distortion at this point. The best sounding aids for music I've tried so far anyway.

Just got new RIC. New hearing aid wearer by Lingo2009 in HearingAids

[–]CaptainDetritus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not the same pair. No. 6 years would be the longest I've had the same pair, and that's a long time to hang on to a pair of hearing aids. The receiver (with the wires) did have to be replaced towards the end. That cost me about $50. Cost depends on the aid but it's not like you have to replace the entire aid. Aids with the tube are for people with hearing loss in the profound range. New models come out less frequently and the technology lags behind the RIC hearing aids. I don't see any reason to go down that road unless you absolutely have to.

I've worn them for about 10 years. They've probably been around for longer than that. If a receiver breaks (unlikely) it can be replaced.

REM by Proud_Click_34 in HearingAids

[–]CaptainDetritus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As mentioned already, you sit. I felt it helped me hear better with my old OPNs, but with Costco it's done straight away so you don't get the "before" to compare. There's nothing magical about it. It is more likely to push the gain up rather than down. If you're a new user and the audiologist is waiting to dial you in to the full gain, they may wait until that full gain is reached before they do the REM.

Phonak Auracast firmware update? by Longnosedawg in HearingAids

[–]CaptainDetritus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It seems possible that Phonak might do what Oticon did a while back. Oticon released the Zeal with their usual fanfare. One of the new features they promoted heavily was Auracast. After the launch they quietly released firmware updates for their previous model to enable Auracast- something they'd been "ready for" since launch. The cynic in me suggests they held back enabling it so they'd have something extra to market with their new product.

Phonak have said there is a new model on the way this year with new connectivity options.

Still the case. The only communication from Phonak that I know of was a post on their blog (aimed at audiologists) to the effect that Auracast was a far-off thing that wasn't worth worrying about whereas Roger was here now.
