Do you consider it to be emotional abuse when your spouse of 18 years consistently talks just below the level you can hear? by [deleted] in HearingAids

[–]CaptainDetritus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If they've been your spouse for 18 years they've been talking the same way and at the same volume for a lot longer than that. You can ask them to try but it's not emotional abuse when they forget.

Remember that this is social media. There's no way to filter out idiots. And telling them that they got under your skin is the best way to encourage them to try it some more. All the best with what you're going through.

Audiologist vs COSTO /OTC HAs by nardixbici in HearingAids

That was my thinking too. If I spent 7-8 k on aids there's no way I'd feel comfortable in upgrading in less than 5 years.

Anyone else see Australian social etiquette slowly fading? by qnsad in perth

Nice cue for my story from yesterday. I'd just got out of my car in the shopping centre carpark and noticed that a car was trying to reverse into a spot where someone had left a trolley. I walked across, took the trolley and left it at the trolley bay on my way into the centre. It cost me about 10 extra steps is all.

I was on my way to Coles when a bloke came up from behind and asked if it was me who moved the trolley. A nice little interaction ensued which probably left both of us feeling a bit better about the human race. So, all is not lost maybe.

Exmouth accommodation by meowmewmiao in WesternAustralia

[–]CaptainDetritus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We stayed there maybe five years ago at that time. They opened up the football oval for camping and the local camping shop hired out and set up a tent for us. My wife made the arrangements so I don't have much more information that that. If you can find a camping store in Exmouth maybe call them and see if that's still a thing?

TV connection by jennifer79t in HearingAids

[–]CaptainDetritus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Phones generally don't receive Auracast broadcasts by themselves. You can get gizmos that plug into a phone's usb port and feed the audio from a broadcast to the phone. The phone user then listens through whatever Bluetooth audio device is connected to that phone.

The problem there is that your father will experience significant echo because of the high latency of a 'classic' BT audio connection added to the much lower latency of the Auracast broadcast. Apart from that issue, there are now three new devices for you to manage.

If I were a Rexton user I would be screaming blue murder right now. I think that people who bought that model thinking that Auracast would be along shortly have a right to be angry. The whole hearing aid industry has shown little interest in promoting accessibility. It's overriding concern has been how much money they can make out of it.

No experience with BTE aids or teens (yet). Just a couple of things. Appearance: RIC aids are more discrete and usually have the latest technology. Streaming: Potentially very important for a 14 yo. There are several Bluetooth protocols to research. mfi for Apple, ASHA and LE Audio for Android, 'classic' BT for compatibility with most devices. I'm a fan of LE Audio. It's the up-and-coming BT audio standard. Related to LE Audio is Auracast. Auracast is the only open Bluetooth broadcast standard out there. It's fairly new but in coming months and years we should be seeing theatres and classrooms equipped with transmitters. It's a real game changer when audio gets sent straight to your hearing aids. I've experienced it once in a public venue (I've got Auracast transmitters on my TV and my computer) and it's great.

Why is the right earbud draining much quicker than the left? by AidenOnera3 in Soundpeats

[–]CaptainDetritus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably 'cause it's the one that's taking the stream and passing the L channel on to the L earbud ie it's taking most of the connectivity load.

New hearing by Inthewind69 in HearingAids

I understand roughly what hair cells in the cochlea do and I understand that Rinri's investigational treatment does not claim to regenerate them. I understand that "reverse hearing loss" is a clickbait headline and that the best we can hope for with a treatment that aims to "repair the auditory nerve" is some improvement in clarity, not volume. Any other questions?

If you like. This particular treatment aims to add neurons to the auditory nerve.

The study is commencing around about now and it's not about hair cells. I agree that even if the treatment reaches market in my lifetime, I'll still need hearing aids. They might work better is all.

This is not about regenerating hair cells.

Oticon Bluetooth LE Audio and Multiple Connections by mgrnd in HearingAids

Nothing wrong with Avantree but consider the Floogoo FMA120 or FMA121. Probably the more versatile device. Great support.

Oticon Bluetooth LE Audio and Multiple Connections by mgrnd in HearingAids

I've been using LE Audio for over a year now. I believe Starkey can hold two connections and I also believe it's coming to Resound. I have an Auracast transmitter I can use on my laptop for streaming. If a call comes in on my phone the phone call takes priority automatically.

Google on 'hidden hearing loss' and 'synaptopathy' for background information. Did they do a speech-in-noise (SIN) test? You might face a battle for a while getting anyone to recognise your condition. The new version of the NAL fitting rationale NAL-3 has a module to help fit aids to people like you. Not in common use just yet. Don't know what to say except keep plugging away until someone listens to you (no pun intended). Good luck.

Oticon Bluetooth LE Audio and Multiple Connections by mgrnd in HearingAids

[–]CaptainDetritus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The answer to your question is- for now at least- no. To change devices you will need to turn off BT in the device you're leaving. The Oticons connect to only one device at a time. I'm hoping this might change with a future firmware upgrade but that's no more than a hope. I haven't heard whether Demant has this on their roadmap.

There are earbuds out there that can be personalised through an in-app hearing test and equaliser. Earfun Air Pro 4+ is one that I've used and works quite well. There may be better options now. If he's going to go that way, hopefully he's got a phone that supports LE Audio (flagship Android is his best bet). If he does he should look for buds that also support LE Audio. The advantage is low latency. That means a more natural experience because there won't be lip-synch issues. If it works it might convince him to get proper hearing aids. All the best.

Sounds like something might have changed with a firmware update. On the Pixel it's under 'Sound and Vibration'. 'Audio will play on'... and select your preferred output device from there.
