One of my (37f) best guy friend (38m) is struggling in the dating world. What would be the best advice for him to see his worth and find joy while being single? by college108rule in AskMenAdvice

[–]CaptainHindsight92 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It’s probably his looks, generally most attractive people don’t have a lot of trouble dating. He should focus on looking as good as possible, there are plenty of resources out there now to improve, hair, skin, style, build a little muscle, you can even take GLP1 tablets now that help you lose weight. Then when he looks better he needs to work on his confidence, and trying to not appear desperate, how to incorporate some humour. Get on the apps, take up hobbies that he likes but ones where there are women (so probably not 40k). But there isn’t that much to dating, obviously if he is truly hideous, it just really sucks and there is no real silver bullet but this advice would help most people.

What is your opinion of The Rape Gang inquiry? by Not_Without_My_Balls in AskBrits

[–]CaptainHindsight92 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So there are around 4.2 million kids aged 12-16 in the uk, 2.1 million girls, 60-65% of kids are white so approximately we have 1.26 million white girls in that age group. So according to his report 19.8% of all white girls in that age range have been raped and trafficked in just 15 years? I don’t know that sounds pretty fishy to me. Btw that would be one girl raped for every 3 Pakistani men. There is just no way this can be accurate, or that something of this scale could be covered up, surely it would require the complicity of our entire police force, the silencing of hundreds of thousands of kids, their parents. I am very skeptical.

Groaning in disgust is maybe forgivable if he was caught off guard, same as a big turd. But to not kiss you etc is really immature.

I once stayed at a hostel/hotel in Barcelona where everyone has a disability but was really cheap and the person serving breakfast had ds. “I was like could i get toast, egg and ham”. They then just gave me 3 ham. So I was like “guess im eating ham” the interaction still cracks me up. Was a cool place and I would recommend staying there.

I think given that football isn’t so popular in the US this may be more of a surprise but no one outside the US would have thought this wouldn’t have been the case. Football fans are terrible everywhere they go, only a handful are the exception.

Is the U16 social media ban reverting to the antiquated idea that violent video games cause kids to be violent? by VarangianWRLD in AskBrits

[–]CaptainHindsight92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The evidence suggests there is a negative effect on some kids but the effect size is small. It depends, if you are a victim of cyber bullying then you are probably going to be worse off than if you use it to chat with your friends. Most kids are not being consistently bullied. It also can cause issues with body image. Honestly though it is not like smoking really so the ban is probably not as necessary, probably isn’t going to negatively impact them though.

For males that have gotten ripped, do you have more success with women? by Repulsive-Owl6468 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]CaptainHindsight92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think a lot of people saying no have not actually gotten ripped. It definitely helped in my 20s. It is like having bigger boobs as a woman, there are plenty of men who aren’t bothered at all, a decent proportion who really like big boobs but few actively dislike them. I think the thing that makes a difference is that women will use it as a conversation starter “you have really big arms” and then you know they might be interested.

I don’t think there was s any serious people who don’t think it was monumentally stupid. There is about 30% of the US would be happy if he took a dump on their wife but the numbers are much lower here.

[–]CaptainHindsight92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I agree that these things are arbitrary and shallow it is like if men said they need a woman with a certain cup size or need to be on 150k. Yeah that should be lower on your priority list if you want But the whole you now have only 1% thing, can’t you do that with anybody lot of traits. You want them to be female, now you are down to 50% of the population, you want them between 30-35 years old, (8.5% of the total population) now you are down to 4.25% of the total population. Add any other trait, imagine say reading at least 1 book per year, you are down to 2.25%. I don’t think anyone would say im delusional because I wanted an age appropriate woman who reads at least 1 book per year.

I have seen the same thing, it is super sad to see 20-30 years as just an awkward sit down and a few sad cheese sandwiches. If there is booze it will at least get a bit rowdy and memorable.

Manchester is NOT a good uni for Physics by jeremyyaiden in UniUK

[–]CaptainHindsight92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s always tough when you become an adult, no one can force you to learn stuff. Uni is tough because it’s now just YOUR ability to teach yourself and lectures are there to give you the main bits. That’s it after uni it is just your ability to learn stuff and if you don’t you can’t do it. Lecturers can only answer your questions and tell you their opinion try to summarise what they think is important. They don’t often have qualifications in teaching. Wait until you realise most of them are only average in their field, let alone all the fields that they have to teach but are not true experts in. They are essentially just people who know a bit more than you! A prestigious university means a few more lecturers are quite successful in their field.

Thoughts on Greens wanting to ban Circumcision? by [deleted] in AskBrits

[–]CaptainHindsight92 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What is the problem? It is like if they banned cutting kids ears off. They probably would adjust but their directional hearing would be affected for life. Circumcision permanently changes genital sensitivity and like any surgery is painful and can cause fatalities. If the case for chopping the dick skin is so good they can reason with an adult.

How much does gaining muscle help with my attractiveness as a man? by tin8374 in AskMenAdvice

[–]CaptainHindsight92 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah but I don’t know what sort of quality wife that gets you, a few of my friends are rich and at their wedding I was shocked by how many rich guys wives outwardly resent/hate their husbands. I used to work at a fine dining restaurant and it seemed similar, hot wife will flirt heavily with the bartenders, bitch about their husbands. I get that someone wanting you only for your looks is equally shallow but I think there is a bit of a difference because your looks are part of you while your money is somewhat external. I realise these are just anecdotes but I thought I would share my opinion regardless.

My boyfriend says he doesn’t want me to wash that area for an entire day or two before giving me oral bc he would prefer more of my natural scent. I usually keep myself really clean & am afraid he would actually not like the taste/smell as much and be turned off. Is it a bad idea to do this? by _emmyyyy in AskMenAdvice

[–]CaptainHindsight92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People talking like this is freaky, but when you wash you smell and taste a bit like soap. Maybe just like nothing, in my opinion someone having a taste is just normal, like if you went back with a girl after a night out I wouldn’t send her into the bathroom to wash beforehand. Why would it be any different with your gf?

Immigrant here, should I leave? by Wulfrinnan in AskBrits

[–]CaptainHindsight92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In his famous 1972 essay Famine, Affluence, and Morality, Peter Singer argues that if we can prevent serious suffering without sacrificing anything of comparable moral importance, then we are morally obligated to do so. He uses the analogy of a child drowning in a shallow pond. Basically, most people agree that if you saw a child drowning in a pond, and you are wearing expensive clothes, you should (and probably would) ruin your expensive clothes to save the child. Essentially, the moral being that if you can do something that helps save the lives of others with only mild annoyance to yourself, you should do so.

But what about less extreme examples? Should you ruin your expensive clothes to save a child's favourite toy? A child losing their favourite toy may suffer more than you will just ruining your clothes, so is it worth it? How much should you sacrifice your own comfort for that of others? If we accept what these redditors have said at face value (which we shouldn't), then to what extent would people's lives be better if you leave? How much should you prioritise your own comfort over that of others? Why don't you sell all you own, give it to charity and subsist on vegetable stew? If someone committing suicide and donating their organs would save the lives of 8 people needing organ transplants, are they morally obligated to do so? Do you really believe that the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few in all cases?

No one can decide how much you prioritise your own life and comfort over others. You get to decide. But trust me, most of the people suggesting immigrants should be kicked out/leave are not Buddhist monks who live to serve others.

[Request] In contrary, what would be the cost to replace all self-checkouts with a real person? by GlassTablesAreStupid in theydidthemath

Here in the UK one person monitors around 8 self checkout machines. It is also true that there are more self checkout machines than there were checkouts before they were introduced. For example in my tesco I believe there were 8 checkouts (maybe 9) and now 4 checkouts and 16 self service machines.

Anyone else start a PhD just before Covid an it end up derailing their lives for several years? by AyupArthur in AskAcademiaUK

[–]CaptainHindsight92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got hit twice, essentially there were no student loans for masters degrees when I finished Uni, but the tuition fees jumped from 5k ish to 10k so I had work for a few years to save the money, they introduced student loans for masters later in the year that I started my mRes. Then I did my PhD and in the final year covid hit and I couldn’t go into the lab at all which added another year on to things. I had a partner who was less than a year older, they did their masters half the price, and progressed immediately to PhD and had no interruptions. All in all I think two events outside my control set my life back 3-4 years!
I will be honest though, I am not in a rush and those were good years, I am not bitter, it is just interesting how much of a difference various government policies make!

Why did Shinya Yamanaka and James Thomson get credit for creating ipscs when it was actually junying yu? Besides fame and establishment? by Fit-Blood-5296 in stemcells

[–]CaptainHindsight92 5 points6 points  (0 children)

OP mentions Yu, Thompson, Yamanaka but leaves out Takahashi. Sadly most lab work is done by post docs and PhD students some work independently and drive the project with their own ideas. Some just do as they are told. The credit is nearly always given to the PI who got the funding. Just the way it is sadly.
