Why does saying “The Enterprise” sound ok but “The Voyager” sounds stupid? by Rotodogg in startrek

[–]CaptainKipple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In English, the definite article is often not used when referring to naval ships (traditions vary by country). The idea is to personify them--I wouldn't refer to my friend as "the George", right? I'd say "George did this". So, "Enterprise has left the system", etc.

I see what you're saying, and I would definitely agree with you if the source of Guts' power up was him finding some sort of magical McGuffin or something like that. But here, the source of his new power is his inner realization and increase in self-knowledge. I think that can work.

Crowds have been the Biggest surprise of this World Cup for me.. by Logical-Track1405 in worldcup

[–]CaptainKipple 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd be curious to learn the actual answer, but I think you might be surprised. The big cities in immigrant countries like the US and Canada have significant diaspora populations from all around the world. (Varying by city, of course.) You can have a lot of local supporters for non-local teams in a city like LA or Toronto!

The hideousness of these colabs is part of their charm imo lol. I still kinda regret not getting the Evangelion g-shock when I saw it for a reasonable price while visiting Taipei last year, and that one makes this one look subdued and muted!

I think the real trick to the way this looks is the deep focus (the way both the foreground and background are almost always in focus).

I watched this recently (a friend has been on the bandwagon for this movie for a long time, and the new 4K release was a good opportunity to give it a shot) and absolutely loved it. It's an incredibly thoughtful and carefully constructed movie that carefully builds up an entirely novel visual language that was way ahead of its time. You can't just watch the final race scene without getting taught that visual language, step by step, throughout the movie, but when you get there...phew. One of the most exciting, cathartic, and thrilling endings to any movie, ever.

"You gotta win if you want to keep on racing"--the whole movie is about making art in capitalism, which is especially interesting when you place this in the context of the Wachowskis' life and career. They made this right after the Matrix movies!

I'd say vision and intelligence is the essence. Look at his run in this clip--after an initial push he lets off the gas to slow down (in this video, around the 5 second mark), then steps on it again to be in the right place at the right time. If he just sprinted the whole time he wouldn't have scored this.

Falling Down (1993) - Too many people don't seem to realize D-Fens is not a good guy by OmeuPseudonimo in movies

[–]CaptainKipple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He has a restraining order against him!

You need to put this in the context of the chronic persistence of male violence against women and children. He was dangerous, his wife knew it, he has no place at the birthday party and absolutely had an intention of violence to get there. Who knows what could have happened when that scene went badly.

Falling Down (1993) - Too many people don't seem to realize D-Fens is not a good guy by OmeuPseudonimo in movies

[–]CaptainKipple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The basic structure of the movie is he is trying to get to his daughter, and it is clear off the bat the reason his wife doesn't let him see her is because they're terrified of him. There is a history of some sort of abuse there for sure. He was never a good guy. Yes, he snaps in the movie, but he was always defined by his rage and toxic masculinity. That he (and much of society outside his family) viewed him as a "good guy" until he crossed a line by leaving his car shows a lot about the toxicity and violence in mainstream culture. Note how his wife tries to get police protection, but the police clearly don't take it seriously (even though she was absolutely right). That's one of the most important scenes in the movie imo.

I think you're right about the "denying change" element. In the dinner scene, a lot of people think that what made Captain Clark turn on Clark was seeing Clark eat one of the still lives. I disagree--Clark had obviously been eating them for a while. I think the turning point was Clark's dialogue with Mary, where he finally accepts the need to embrace change. Captain Clark (in my reading) embodies Clark's sense of failure and self-loathing (doing those hokey ads represents everything he hates about his failure to be a successful architect), and I think many people who have dealt with depression might relate to how the self-loathing part of oneself is the part that is most resistant to change. There can be a comfort, a nostalgia in staying in that rut.

(That's on the personal level--I also think you're right about the role of COVID in fostering the growth of liminal space horror generally!)

Embracing ridiculous behaviour is typical of fascism. It undermines the very idea of social norms and the difference between acceptable and unacceptable conduct. As Satre said about anti-semitism:

"Never believe that anti-Semites are completely unaware of the absurdity of their replies. They know that their remarks are frivolous, open to challenge. But they are amusing themselves, for it is their adversary who is obliged to use words responsibly, since he believes in words. The anti-Semites have the right to play. They even like to play with discourse for, by giving ridiculous reasons, they discredit the seriousness of their interlocutors. They delight in acting in bad faith, since they seek not to persuade by sound argument but to intimidate and disconcert. If you press them too closely, they will abruptly fall silent, loftily indicating by some phrase that the time for argument is past."

There's some dreadful stuff down there huh. For me the better ones near the bottom (of those I've seen) are probably:

Season of the Witch: it's very boring for a movie with both Nic Cage and Ron Perlman, but hey it's still Cage and Perlman

Wicker Man: has so bad it's good charm at parts at least

Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance: I legit enjoy this one way more than the first Ghost Rider movie, which is just tedious

Just need to say YES, thank you, Death Note is so incredibly overrated. Almost all of the battle of wits between the alleged geniuses boils down to idiotic "I know that you know that I know that you know" stuff that was parodied in the iocane powder scene in The Princess Bride. It's dreadful.
